• Enhance women’s capacity for car<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Increase women’s access to and autonomy to decide on use <strong>of</strong> household<br />

resources.<br />

• Promote <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> community support groups and l<strong>in</strong>kages with food<br />

security programs.<br />

• Raise awareness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> burden <strong>of</strong> caregiv<strong>in</strong>g by<br />

husbands and o<strong>the</strong>r non-parental members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> household (sibl<strong>in</strong>gs and o<strong>the</strong>rs)<br />

both at <strong>the</strong> community and household levels.<br />

• Increase female educational atta<strong>in</strong>ment through gendered awareness creation,<br />

affirmative action, and through <strong>in</strong>formal education.<br />

• Raise women’s knowledge <strong>of</strong> child feed<strong>in</strong>g and car<strong>in</strong>g practices through home<br />

visit programs by <strong>in</strong>tegrated teams <strong>of</strong> kebele development workers.<br />

• Increase women’s <strong>in</strong>come and employment status through rais<strong>in</strong>g micro credit<br />

schemes and entrepreneurship <strong>in</strong>terventions at <strong>the</strong> community level.<br />

• Promote time sav<strong>in</strong>g technologies for women – gra<strong>in</strong> mills, alternative fuel<br />

sources, water sources, improved stoves.<br />

• Establish community day care centers for both rural and urban women.<br />

• Promote maternal nutrition dur<strong>in</strong>g pregnancy and lactation.<br />

• Promote health care utilization by <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r (antenatal care, delivery care,<br />

postnatal care, and family plann<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

• Include car<strong>in</strong>g as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> values presented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civics education syllabus at<br />

<strong>the</strong> primary and secondary schools.<br />

• Give special attention to <strong>the</strong> care <strong>of</strong> vulnerable segments <strong>of</strong> society (children, women,<br />

elderly people, and disabled) dur<strong>in</strong>g emergency and crisis situations.<br />

• Make sure that essential car<strong>in</strong>g practices – optimal breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g, optimal<br />

complementary feed<strong>in</strong>g – are not compromised due to crisis.<br />

• Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> access to water and cont<strong>in</strong>ued use <strong>of</strong> hygienic practices.<br />

• Protect <strong>the</strong> vulnerable from accidents, abuses, and dangers.<br />

• Support operations research on better car<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />

• Monitor and evaluate at all levels and dissem<strong>in</strong>ate f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs. For preplann<strong>in</strong>g and for<br />

evaluation, use <strong>the</strong> “triple-A cycle approach”.<br />

4.5.2. What are <strong>the</strong> advantages <strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g a NNS <strong>in</strong> place?<br />

The national nutrition strategy is necessary to focus on strategic issues to address<br />

chronic nutritional problems <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ethiopia</strong>. Without a well-designed strategy all efforts will be<br />

poorly coord<strong>in</strong>ated and will compete with one ano<strong>the</strong>r ra<strong>the</strong>r than result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />

solutions. The national nutrition strategy will:<br />

• Facilitate <strong>the</strong> necessary <strong>in</strong>stitutional arrangements for effective care.<br />

• Ma<strong>in</strong>stream care to <strong>the</strong> various sectors as a cross-cutt<strong>in</strong>g issue.<br />

• Establish an <strong>in</strong>stitutional framework for advocacy for and <strong>the</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

evaluation <strong>of</strong> better car<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />
