CHAPTER 4: RESULTS OF THE BÉNIN SMALL FARMER, COMMUNITY, AND<br />

GROUPEMENT VILLAGEOIS SURVEYS<br />

This chapter describes the results of three surveys carried out in the Republic of Bénin in 1998-<br />

1999: a survey of 899 agricultural households, a survey of 98 communities, and a survey of 189<br />

groupements villageois (GVs). The GVs are village-level farmer organizations that play a central<br />

role in cotton marketing and input distribution.<br />

4.1.1 Survey methods<br />

Questionnaire The questionnaire for the IFPRI-LARES Small Farmer Survey was<br />

developed collaboratively by IFPRI and LARES and consisted of 24 pages divided into 16 sections.<br />
