NGEMC marks 73rd year
SUBMITTED BY NORTH
GEORGIA EMC
North Georgia Electric
Membership Corporation
(NGEMC) and its customers
are an energy resource
together and as individuals.
Together theyhavethe power
to help make their energy
future clean and bright by
lowering the demand for
electricity and helping keep
the cost of electricity down.
“Collectively, we can
always make a difference,”
NGEMC President and CEO
Ron Hutchins told acrowd of
about 2,000 at the electric
cooperative’s 73rd annual
meeting Thursday in Dalton.
“That’s how cooperatives
came about in the first
place.”
“The demand for electricity
is going up. The cost of
electricity is going up,” said
Hutchins. “But you and Ican
help. We as individuals and
as partners can be a great
energy resource in controlling
and minimizing the
impact of local, national,
regional and global demand
on energy prices. If we are
more energy efficient, we
help lower the demand for
electricity and help create a
cleaner environment for us
all. We believe our energy
and our future go hand and
hand. Our future is our energy.”
The members of the cooperative
met at the Northwest
Georgia Trade and
Convention Center to elect
directors from Gordon and
Floyd counties and to hear
the annual report of the cooperative
from Hutchins.
NGEMC serves parts of
seven counties in Northwest
Georgia and has grown from
1,700 members in 1936 to
98,500 members today.
In his annual report to
NGEMC members, Hutchins
noted that energy issues
involve not just local people,
but are shaped by global,
national, regional and community
forces. Not only is
demand for electricity growing
in Northwest Georgia,
but the need for power is
greatly increasing worldwide
as other countries industrialize.
As technology improves,
so do the number of
machines that run on electricity.These
additional electronic
products in the home
and workplace increase the
demand for electricity.
Things like picture frames,
for example, that used to be
simply a paper photo have
transformed into interactive,
digital frames running on
electricity. The proliferation
of other electricity-driven
home gadgets and gizmos
like cell phone chargers,
cordless phones, gaming systems,
satellite and cable
setup boxes, also cause the
demand for electricity to rise.
As demand for electricity
rises, so does the cost of
electricity. Several factors
play into the increased
prices. Besides increasing
environmental standards driving
up prices, future legislative
mandates for more green
power generation and new
clean air standards could also
play arole in the increase,
said Hutchins.
NGEMC is also doing its
part to keep electricity prices
down. The co-op stresses
reliability of electrical service
and efficiency ofwork
around the clock. It continues
ahigh standard of excellence
in construction and
maintenance and employs a
year-round, right of way tree
trimming and vegetation
management program.
NGEMC also continuously
trains its team members and
uses the latest technology
whenever possible.
In the co-op business
meeting, members attending
voted the re-election, without
opposition, of two directors,
Ed WorleyofGordon County
and M.L. Holsonback of
Floyd County.
This summer we celebrate
our 20th year…
We are grateful for the opportunity
to be of service tothis wonderful
community!
