Captain America rises from dead
Captain America is rising from the grave.
The Marvel Comics superhero returns for the five-part series
“Captain America Reborn,” beginning July 1.
But Marvel won’t disclose how he rises from the dead. Executive
Editor Tom Brevoort teases that the character has been “on
a Vonnegut-esque metaphysical journey,” including some soulsearching
about his place in the world.
A&E cancels Swayze drama, ‘The Beast’
“The Beast,” a police drama that starred the ailing
Patrick Swayze, will not return for a second
season, A&E announced Monday.
The series, which premiered in January, starred
Swayze as Charles Barker, a rogue undercover
FBI agent teamed up with rookie Ellis Dove, Travis
Fimmel. The series was filmed on location in
Chicago.
Reviews for the series were mixed and its audience
averaged 1.3 million viewers through the Swayze
Patrick
13 episodes, which concluded their run in April.
But Swayze was unstinting in a rough-and-tumble performance
that he maintained while battling pancreatic cancer. His
illness had no discernible effect on his gritty portrayal.
A&E President Bob DeBitetto called the performance “an inspiration
to us all.”
DeBitetto said the series “has truly been a labor of love for everyone,”
but added that “after careful deliberation we have reluctantly
decided not to attempt a second season.”
Alba won’t face vandalism charges
Police have decided against pursuing a criminal vandalism
case against Jessica Alba over some posters that were plastered
around downtown Oklahoma City.
Police Sgt. Gary Knight said none of the owners of property on
which the posters were placed wanted to press charges against
Alba, who has apologized.
Police never interviewed the 28-year-old co-star of the “Fantastic
Four” movies, “Sin City and “Good Luck Chuck.” She is in
Oklahoma City shooting a movie, “The Killer Inside Me.”
Palin <strong>accepts</strong> Letterman’s latest apology

Palin says she <strong>accepts</strong> David
Letterman’s apology for the
joke about her daughter.
The Alaska governor, in a
statement issued today, said
the apology was accepted “on
behalf of all young women,
like my daughters, who hope
men who ‘joke’ about public
displays of sexual exploitation
of girls will soon evolve.”
On his CBS’ “Late Show”
Monday night, Letterman
said his joke about one of Palin’s
daughters being “knocked
up” by Alex Rodriguez can’t
be defended.
He said the joke referred to
18-year-old Bristol Palin, not
her 14-year-old sister, Willow.
But Letterman said it’s his
responsibility that people
believed that he intended
to target Willow, who had
attended a New York Yankees
game with her mother.

Letterman last week tried
to make light of the joke after
the first indications that it had
fallen flat. Palin had called
the comments “sexually perverted,”
and her husband,
Todd, said that “any jokes
about raping my 14-year-old
are despicable.”
Palin said today that Letterman
has the right to joke about
whatever he wants to, and
“thankfully we have the right
to express our reaction.”
“This is all thanks to our U.S.
military men and women putting
their lives on the line for
us to secure an American’s
right to free speech,” she said.
“In this case, may that right be
used to promote equality and
respect.”
Although Bristol, an unwed
mother, was the target of his
joke, Letterman didn’t name
her when it was originally
made on June 8.
It was “a coarse joke,” “a bad
joke,” Letterman told viewers.
“But I never thought it was
(about) anybody other than
the older daughter, and before
the show, I checked to make
sure, in fact, that she is of legal
age, 18.”
“The joke, really, in and of
itself, can’t be defended,” he
declared.

Oh, boy! Moms sue, say sex tests wrong
Six New York City mothers are suing the maker of a baby sex
test that touted its product as “infallibly accurate,” saying the test
results they received were wrong.
In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, the women claim
they received incorrect results from the $275 Baby Gender Mentor
test by Acu-Gen Biolab Inc., of Lowell, Mass.
The suit claims the test maker advertised its product as the
“gold standard for prenatal gender detection.”
The company’s Web site says the test can determine a baby’s
sex as early as five to eight weeks’ gestation.
Lawyer Barry Gainey said the lawsuit charges the product’s
makers and marketers with negligence and fraud, and seeks unspecified
damages.
