and the Caribbean host for the Building Strong Library<br />
Associations Program (BSLA), comprising several modules<br />
that will be delivered in Lima next September. This program<br />
aims to add value to the profession, to build strong and<br />
sustainable associatiosn and increase the number of members.<br />
For this reason and in order to plan the delivery of this<br />
program, Fiona Bradley, coordinator of the ALP Programme,<br />
and Filiberto Martínez, Chairman of <strong>IFLA</strong> Latin America and<br />
the Caribbean Committee, members of the Colegio de<br />
Bibliotecólogos del Perú, and a number of officials met from<br />
14 to 16 June this year.<br />

3rd International congress on librarianship and<br />
information: "The Librarian in the Information<br />
Society", Lima, September 14-16, 2010<br />
The 3rd International Congress on Librarianship and<br />
Information will be held in Lima, Peru, on September 14-16,<br />
2010, sponsored by the Association of Librarians of Peru and<br />
supported by domestic and foreign institutions. The objectives<br />
of the event include: To provide a needful forum to discuss and<br />
rethink the role of the state in the access of the population to<br />
basic reading and information services; to identify areas of<br />
participation for the librarian in the process of building the<br />
Knowledge Society through research, communication and<br />
good management practices; and to foster the exchange of<br />
experiences among Librarianship and Information<br />
professionals.<br />
The academic program of the event includes lectures,<br />
conferences, workshops, group work and plenary sessions. In<br />
addition, a complementary program will be available,<br />
including cultural activities and presentation of publications<br />
and new technologies. The themes of the event include: Access<br />
and communication of information in the Knowledge Society,<br />
Information and Technology Innovation, Information<br />
Management in the Knowledge Society; New professional<br />
abilities required from the Information professional.<br />
Speakers and lecturers included prestigious national and<br />
foreign professionals (from Latin America and Europe).<br />
Event's target audience mainly includes researchers, academics<br />
and information specialists: Librarians, Documentalists,<br />
Archivists, Computer Engineers, undergraduate students of<br />
similar majors, and interested public.<br />

New publication on public libraries<br />
The Public Libraries Chapter of Colegio de Bibliotecólogos del<br />
Perú has developed a new manual entitled: "The Public Library<br />
in Peru, organization and promotion."A team of professionals<br />
with extensive experience in public library management<br />
worked on the drafting of this document under the coordination<br />
of Librarian Beatriz Prieto, director of Municipal Library<br />
Ricardo Palma de Miraflores-Lima.<br />
The main topics addressed in the manual include:<br />
The social role of the Public Library;<br />
Administration;<br />
Location and furniture;<br />
Human Resources;<br />
Collection Development, including a basic collection proposal;<br />
and Promotion Services, among others.<br />
Publishing this important and needful work was possible<br />
thanks to the Publishing Fund of Ricardo Palma University in<br />
Lima, as a contribution to the development of the Public<br />
Library.<br />

"Read in green"<br />
Under this suggestive title and coordinated by Librarian Luis<br />
Gutierrez, the "First Green Book and Reading Festival was<br />
delivered in Ciudad Iquito (Loreto, Peru) from 21 to 24 June,<br />
2010. The Festival aims to encourage people from all ages to<br />
the reading and information services provided by libraries and<br />
documentation centers in the area, while promoting<br />
environmental awareness and intercultural dialog in the context<br />
of multiple challenges generally faced in the Amazon.<br />
The program of the Festival includes a wide range of activities<br />
such as exhibition of books and papers addressing topics<br />
related to the Amazon's soil, flora, fauna and natural resources;<br />
a green film series, entomological exhibitions in the region,<br />
presention of new books, magazines in various formats, among<br />
many other cultural activities, as evidence of the creative and<br />
vibrant attitude of the population in the region. Libraries are<br />
"painted green" on the occasion of this innovative project<br />
which has become part of the traditional activities in Saint<br />
John Feast.<br />
Iquitos, located on the banks of the mighty Amazon River, is<br />
the Capital of Loreto, which is located northwest of Peru. This<br />
is the largest department, where a number of indigenous<br />
peoples live and interact with the population of the city,<br />
preserving their cultural identity.<br />
