and the Caribbean host for the Building Strong Library
Associations Program (BSLA), comprising several modules
that will be delivered in Lima next September. This program
aims to add value to the profession, to build strong and
sustainable associatiosn and increase the number of members.
For this reason and in order to plan the delivery of this
program, Fiona Bradley, coordinator of the ALP Programme,
and Filiberto Martínez, Chairman of IFLA Latin America and
the Caribbean Committee, members of the Colegio de
Bibliotecólogos del Perú, and a number of officials met from
14 to 16 June this year.

3rd International congress on librarianship and
information: "The Librarian in the Information
Society", Lima, September 14-16, 2010
The 3rd International Congress on Librarianship and
Information will be held in Lima, Peru, on September 14-16,
2010, sponsored by the Association of Librarians of Peru and
supported by domestic and foreign institutions. The objectives
of the event include: To provide a needful forum to discuss and
rethink the role of the state in the access of the population to
basic reading and information services; to identify areas of
participation for the librarian in the process of building the
Knowledge Society through research, communication and
good management practices; and to foster the exchange of
experiences among Librarianship and Information
professionals.
The academic program of the event includes lectures,
conferences, workshops, group work and plenary sessions. In
addition, a complementary program will be available,
including cultural activities and presentation of publications
and new technologies. The themes of the event include: Access
and communication of information in the Knowledge Society,
Information and Technology Innovation, Information
Management in the Knowledge Society; New professional
abilities required from the Information professional.
Speakers and lecturers included prestigious national and
foreign professionals (from Latin America and Europe).
Event's target audience mainly includes researchers, academics
and information specialists: Librarians, Documentalists,
Archivists, Computer Engineers, undergraduate students of
similar majors, and interested public.
Those interested in presenting papers or attending in the event

New publication on public libraries
The Public Libraries Chapter of Colegio de Bibliotecólogos del
Perú has developed a new manual entitled: "The Public Library
in Peru, organization and promotion."A team of professionals
with extensive experience in public library management
worked on the drafting of this document under the coordination
of Librarian Beatriz Prieto, director of Municipal Library
Ricardo Palma de Miraflores-Lima.
The main topics addressed in the manual include:
The social role of the Public Library;
Administration;
Location and furniture;
Human Resources;
Collection Development, including a basic collection proposal;
and Promotion Services, among others.
Publishing this important and needful work was possible
thanks to the Publishing Fund of Ricardo Palma University in
Lima, as a contribution to the development of the Public
Library.

"Read in green"
Under this suggestive title and coordinated by Librarian Luis
Gutierrez, the "First Green Book and Reading Festival was
delivered in Ciudad Iquito (Loreto, Peru) from 21 to 24 June,
2010. The Festival aims to encourage people from all ages to
the reading and information services provided by libraries and
documentation centers in the area, while promoting
environmental awareness and intercultural dialog in the context
of multiple challenges generally faced in the Amazon.
The program of the Festival includes a wide range of activities
such as exhibition of books and papers addressing topics
related to the Amazon's soil, flora, fauna and natural resources;
a green film series, entomological exhibitions in the region,
presention of new books, magazines in various formats, among
many other cultural activities, as evidence of the creative and
vibrant attitude of the population in the region. Libraries are
"painted green" on the occasion of this innovative project
which has become part of the traditional activities in Saint
John Feast.
Iquitos, located on the banks of the mighty Amazon River, is
the Capital of Loreto, which is located northwest of Peru. This
is the largest department, where a number of indigenous
peoples live and interact with the population of the city,
preserving their cultural identity.
