April 2010
from the president Rex Heck, President
April in Colorado is
not quite like April in
Paris. Well, maybe
that is not a bad
thing—you don’t
have to learn French,
and traffic circles are
few and far between. In Paris, the Alps
are close by, but we have the Rockies
even closer. Time to put away the skis,
get the Porsche out of mothballs and
get ready for some summer cruising by
car instead of skis!
I have my track car in the shop getting
its annual physical. (Maybe the
driver should go to the shop and get
checked out too.) My street car is next.
Any of the shops that advertise in the
newsletter are good places to take
your car to get it serviced.
This year, as usual, we have something
Porsche for everyone. We start
the season off with some high-speed
driving instruction at High Plains Raceway.
For something a little tamer, both
RMR and AMR have several
autocrosses scheduled. Also check out
the RMR Web site for tours, rallies,
concours, socials and lots of other fun
events. The schedule can be dynamic,
so visit the Web page often for latest
updates. I also send out e-mail notices
of last-minute changes. If you have not
been getting the e-mails and want to
see what you have been missing, go to
the PCA Web site (www.pca.org), log in
to your account and check your e-mail
address. There are about 800 Rocky
Mountain Region members who have
not input an e-mail address (family
members can input a separate e-mail
address too, if desired). This is especially
important so we can contact you
courtesy Dr. Ing. h.c. F.
Porsche AG
about event changes because
of weather or other reasons.
There have been some changes to
the Junior Participation Program this
year. The program is for 16- and 17year-olds
who are fully-licensed
drivers. In the past, the program was
limited to sons and daughters of PCA
members. This year, the program has
been expanded to include nieces,
nephews, grandchildren and step-children.
The PCA member sponsoring the
junior must be present at the event.
Special release forms signed by both
parents or guardians are required.
Make sure you have the forms filled
out and signed before you come to the
event! The program is limited to
autocrosses, autocross schools, rallies,
and concours. This is an excellent
opportunity for new drivers to learn
handling skills.
We had record attendance at the
March social! It was great to see old
friends and meet so many new members.
The April social will be at Prestige
Imports on Thursday, April 1 (see page
2). This should be a fun and informative
session. Come by at 6:30 for
refreshments and check out the new
Porsches, then a special program at
7:30. We haven’t made plans for what
to do for socials the rest of the year, so
if you have any ideas, talk to a board
member. New ideas are welcome.
Time to head down to the garage
and clean up my car so it looks good
for cruising this summer. I thought
about a hydraulic lift kit and big subwoofers,
but I plan on heading to the
mountains instead of Federal Blvd. I
prefer peace and quiet.
See you at the next event!
Paul has owned Porsches since
The Nor’Easter.
Windblown Witness.
These are the titles
of various regional
newsletters around
PCA, and each of
them says
something about its region. Others,
such as Spiel and Der Auspuff, give a
nod to (most of) our cars’ German origin.
I would say that these titles have a
certain je ne sais quoi about them, but
French phrases have no place in a publication
about a German marque!
By way of comparison, the Rocky
Mountain Region publishes a newsletter
called RMR Porsche News. No
offense to whoever came up with the
name—although I’d bet that person is
still out there—but this is probably one
of the most prosaic titles in all of PCA.
What’s in a name? In the grand
scheme of things, it probably doesn’t
matter a great deal what we call our
newsletter. Content is king, and the
RMR newsletter—under the names
RMR/Porsche, The Newsletter and
Porsche Patter—has earned the Paul R.
Heinmiller Award almost as many
times (six) as anyone else (San Diego
Region, eight), boring title and all.
So if the title doesn’t matter, why all
the fuss? After all, RMR/Porsche
(recently adding News) has stood since
1982, over half as long as RMR itself.
For one, I think we can do better. A
more engaging name would better
reflect the club’s unique dynamic. And
it just might encourage a non-member
to pick up a copy while waiting for
service on his or her Porsche, and see
what this organization is all about. (So
maybe the name does matter.)
And, perhaps more importantly, I
believe the current name may be living
on borrowed time. In recent years,
Porsche has become rather protective
of its trademarks, having negotiated
an agreement with PCA over permitted
use of the Porsche name and associated
trademarks. (At issue was PCA’s
right to even call itself the Porsche
Club of America!) The long and short of
it is that using someone else’s trademarks
in the title of a publication is
skating on thin ice.
So I am asking you, our readers, to
suggest a new name for your newsletter
via a contest. I’ll convene a panel
to choose a winner, the submitter of
which will receive not only bragging
rights, but something of tangible value
as well: a $50 credit good toward any
RMR event. The rules are simple:
• Only RMR members are eligible.
• Entries must not infringe Porsche’s
trademarks (or anyone else’s).
• Entries must not be substantially
similar to the name of any other PCA
newsletter.
• Submit as many entries as you like.
• Submit your entries by April 30 to
newsletter@rmrporscheclub.com.
• The panel’s decision will be final. In
the case of a “tie” (multiple contestants
submitting the same winning
name), the earliest submission wins.
You may not get another chance like
this for another 28 years, so don’t miss
out—enter now! I look forward to seeing
your creative suggestions.
April showers bring
May flowers...
Wow, what a fantastic
turnout for the
March membership
social! We had many
members new and
old. Eleven new members
attended the February social, with
25 new members in March. Maybe it is
location, location, location!
We welcomed 19 new members and
one transfer to the club last month. We
continue to add to our membership each
month, which makes us one of the
fastest-growing regions in PCA.
April showers… Hopefully, rain (or
snow!) will not foil any of the events
planned for this month. The April membership
social will be held at Prestige
Imports in Lakewood on Thursday, April
1st (this is no joke). Special guest will be
Paul Gagliardi of Porsche Cars North
America (see page 2). There will be
Instructor Training on Saturday, April
24th, and RMR’s first Drivers Education
event will be “SPEED Fever 2010” on
Sunday, April 25th (page 5). Both will be
held at High Plains Raceway near Byers,
CO. Also, RMR’s Autocross School and
Autocross will be held Saturday, May 1st
and Sunday, May 2nd at Dick’s Sporting
Goods Park in Commerce City (page 6).
The Alpine Mountain Region, our
neighbors to the south, are having a
Gimmick Rally on Saturday, April 3rd
and an Autocross on Saturday, April
17th. Also, AMR is celebrating their 35th
anniversary as a region of the Porsche
Club of America. Congratulations, AMR!
As you can see, the driving season has
begun, and the calendar is filling up with
events! For more information or to register
for any of the RMR or AMR events,
go to www.motorsportreg.com.
the RMR Goodie Store, found on the
RMR Porsche Club Web site, www.
We still need several event chairs and
co-chairs and can always use volunteers
for the various events. If you would like
to help, e-mail Chris Sulley at
Wake up, Ferdinand—you haven’t signed up!
There are only a few more days left before you’ll
have to take the chance of driving out to the track
and registering as a walk-in on the day of the event.
Registration is open at www.motorsportreg.com.
Remember, Ferdinand, if the event is full (like last
year), walk-ins will not be allowed! When the event
reaches 120 participants, it’s closed—even to you,
Ferdinand! And, the event chairs will open up registration
to lesser makes of vehicles in the weeks
before the DE if the event is not filled.
Ferdinand, get over to www.motorsportreg.com
Don’t miss our first track event of the season; the effects of untreated “Speed
Fever” come on quickly, and they are ugly!
During the long winter, we all got the fever—the only cure is track
time! The 2010 RMR season opener is a special one-day event—Sunday,
April 25th, at the one and only High Plains Raceway (see their Web site at
www.highplainsraceway.com).
Besides offering a great, fun, challenging track (check out YouTube for
in-car videos), High Plains will also have some new amenities for us to
enjoy. These include a gazebo, flush toilets, a play area for the kiddies
and a new food concession.
As with last year, the track will also be staffing the corners with corner
workers. Lots of track time, Ferdinand.
Pre-Tech: We highly recommend you pre-tech your car, in order to have time to
address any issues that may be found. If problems are found on your car at track
tech, you may be turned away from the event. Don’t let this happen to you!
Pre-tech is free at participating shops, and will take place on Wednesday, April 14th.
autocross school and autocross Saturday-Sunday, May 1-2
Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
Saturday, May 1 - Autocross School
Sunday, May 2 - Autocross
If you missed last year’s Autocross
School—canceled due to snow—here’s
your chance to make up for it!
Autocross is not only a “performance
driving event,” but a safe way to learn
how to drive your car at its limit. You not
only learn how to handle your car at
speeds that you drive daily, but you also:
• gain confidence in your driving ability;
• learn the limits of your car’s brakes;
• learn correct seating, hand, and feet
positions;
• learn the limits of your tires’ adhesion.
Autocross is a great way to exercise your
driving skills in a safe environment.
Instructors will be available to you during
the school to teach you these skills.
Each autocross has a different and
unique course design and will undoubtedly
provide you with a fun driving
experience. Finally, autocross is a social
gathering of new and old friends and is
lots of fun!
Mark your calendars for this fun and
exciting RMR event, to be held in the
parking lot of Dick’s Sporting Goods
Park. The autocross school is an event
that we encourage you to try whether or
not you plan to autocross or participate
in drivers education events in the future.
Our excellent club instructors will work
with you while you learn the capabilities
of your Porsche (or other chosen automobile)
and yourself, with plenty of
driving time through three car control
exercises. Learn about car balance
through two slalom courses, throttle
steering around two different skid pads,
and how to plan and look ahead while
manipulating your way through a mini
autocross course.
We guarantee one thing—you will
leave the autocross school with a huge
smile and will be ready to prove your
new-found skills on the full autocross
course on Sunday. Plus, the knowledge
you gain of your vehicle’s capabilities
and the driving tips from our trained
instructors will be directly applicable to
everyday driving and will make you a
more alert and safer driver on the road.
Do you have a licensed 16- or 17-yearold
that no longer appreciates your
insightful driving tips? The autocross
school is a perfect event for them to
improve their skills and get a taste of the
motoring bug. Your patience may be
stretched, but our instructors are up to
the challenge!
Online registration should be open by
the time you read this. We recommend
registering early for the school, as it is
very popular and limited to 65 students.
Sign up early to get in on the action!
Though a Porsche is not
required, we can only
accept SUV’s with a
Cayenne badge, and no
pick-ups. Please see the
Michael Madrid
RMR Web site for additional
information on autocross
events and to find the registration
link. “Walk-in”
registration (cash or check
only) will be available—
space permitting—for the
school and autocross. However,
pre-registration helps
the process flow smoothly
and assures that we have enough
warm beverages each morning.
You will need a Snell 2000 or Snell
2005 certified helmet (the club has
some loaners). You will need to bring
snacks, lunch and non-alcoholic refreshments,
as there will be no concessions
available at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
You do not need to have your car pretech’ed.
There will be top tech at the
event each day—you must empty your
car of all loose items (floor mats, bags,
cans, etc.), empty the glove box and
door pockets, and perform a basic tech
inspection (secure battery, firm brakes,
no significant leaks, etc.).
Autocross setup requires a platoon of
volunteers! If you can volunteer, please
contact one of the event chairs and prepare
to arrive in time for course setup.
event registration updates Kristie Widrig, Registration Chair
The first track event of 2010 is only a
few weeks away! Another busy and funfilled
driving season is about to begin.
The registration process is an integral
part of every club event, so the beginning
of the driving season is the perfect
time to review the registration process
and changes for 2010.
Late Fees
DE events require significant effort
prior to the event to assign drivers to
run groups, determine instructor
requirements, and compile a master listing
of drivers for use by Start and
Control. Late registrations place a substantial
strain on this process! Because
of these extra last-minute efforts, we
will reinstate a $25 late fee for Drivers
Education (DE) registrations received
after the online registration close date.
All late registrations will be treated as
walk-ins on the day of the event and will
be subject to track space availability
and instructor availability if applicable.
General Registration Guidelines
• All registrations are processed via the
on-line registration Web site, which
can be accessed by visiting the RMR
Web site at www.rmrporscheclub.com,
then clicking on the RMR Event Registration
link.
• Each driver is required to register and
submit payment separately using a
unique user account (tied to a unique
e-mail address).
• PCA membership numbers and membership
status are verified as part of
the registration process. Nonmembers
will be assessed a $10
non-member fee for all events.
• Events will be opened for registration
approximately 6 weeks prior to the
event.
• Events will close 1 week prior to the
event—closure date is noted in the
online registration form.
• For DE events, non-member registrations
will be accepted 2 weeks prior to
the event, subject to track space
availability. We expect some events
will fill to capacity, so we would like to
have PCA members sign up early to fill
the track with Porsches!
• If you have signed up for an event and
cannot attend, please notify the registrar
or cancel online as soon as
possible, but not later than 24 hours
prior to the event.
Please plan to arrive early for events to
a novice view of the 1971 porsche parade Andrew S. Chisholm, First Settlers Region
As a young rookie Porsche owner, I discovered
the benefits of PCA membership
after joining in 1969. What really got my
attention was this wonderful Panorama
magazine that appeared in my mailbox
each month. In the days when there were
no electronic means of communication
(as we practice today), and Porsche ownership
was somewhat rare, this magical
Porsche-only publication was a real treat
to receive.
Panorama’s pages included lovingly
written articles about Porsche cars and
the people who drove them. It featured
advertising of Porsche stuff to buy,
upcoming events to attend, Porsche factory
news and stories of Porsche racing
from all over the world. One event that
caught my eye was the annual
PCA convention, referred to as
the “Porsche Parade.” In 1971,
Sun Valley, Idaho would be the
location. I just had to attend.
I must admit being somewhat
intimidated at attending such an
extravaganza. Some of those
famous people mentioned in the
“Pano” would be there. No one
from my region was going to
10
courtesy Porsche Panorama archives
attend. How would I do, competing
against all of those
experienced and accomplished
Porsche drivers? Maybe I should
sit this one out. Or just attend
and take pictures. I decided to
enter the autocross and the hill
climb competition. At least I had
some local autocross experience.
After a wonderful trip in my
1969 912, I drove into the parking
lot of the Sun Valley Lodge. It was a
beautiful place, but my first fear had
come true. There I was in the midst of
hundreds of Porsches, and I knew no one.
However, no sooner than I had switched
off the ignition, I was approached by an
official-looking guy in a Castrol Oil hat.
Uh oh, I must be parked in the wrong
place. But he had spotted my Virginia
license plates and came over to
introduce himself. Turns out he was Dan
Rowzie of the Potomac region. Dan and I
had met at a couple of PCA events back
east, and he was one of those famous
people with his name in the Pano, as he
served as the National Public Relations
guy for PCA. Dan introduced me to the
members of his group and invited me to
park with them in the concours prep
parking lot. So much for not knowing
anyone 2000 miles from home!
Tuesday was concours day, with over
100 Porsche cars displayed for judging. It
is hard to explain the impression that
April 2010
spectacular scene had on me. I used all
of the film for my camera that I had
brought with me and wished I had more. I
went from Porsche to Porsche, taking
notes and pictures and talking to most
anyone who would listen. What a wonderful
day! The owners of the Porsches
displayed all seemed to have a special
story about their cars and were anxious
to tell that story. Back at the Lodge late
that afternoon, I thought that this sort of
gathering was not just about the cars,
but the very special people who drive
them. Maybe there is a slogan brewing
there.
I was really nervous about the
autocross. If there is any event where I
can display my skills, the autocross is it.
The author demonstrates mastery of the windshield wipers during
the 1971 Porsche Parade autocross in Sun Valley, Idaho.
On Wednesday morning, I showed up
early to make sure that I was prepared.
First, the 912. Just take all movable items
from the interior and trunk, take off the
hubcaps (yes, hubcaps) and adjust the
tire pressures. For a “stock” class
Porsche, that is about it, and not much
has changed over the years. As for driver
prep, walk the course and make sure you
know exactly where you want to go. One
main thing about the autocross game is
not to hesitate while you wonder where
the course goes.
The Sun Valley autocross was held on
public streets, some of which were roads
in front of houses and condos not yet
built. This made for kind of a “road
cross”, fun to drive and safe for the drivers.
The 912 class was well represented,
with 23 cars entered, as four-cylinder
Porsches were pretty common. As the
912 group lined up for the start, I thought
I should have a pretty good chance to do
well. Lots of different colors and years of
912s were staged, but all seemed somewhat
the same, making it close to a
“spec” class.
The flagman waived the green, and I
was off on my first Porsche Parade
autocross. This was “big time” for me
and I wanted to make a good showing. I
did OK at following the course, made a
couple of mistakes in the “turn around”
area where I thought I should shift to first
gear and ultimately finished 7th in class.
I was kind of disappointed with my performance,
but only 2.34 seconds from
the first place time of 1:51.69. At the
autocross banquet, I was awarded a trophy
for my efforts and received applause
from those in attendance. Wow, I was
one notch down from the Indy 500!
Upon arriving home, I had all
of my pictures developed and
thought that I sure would like to
have one of my 912 in action
during the autocross. A great
idea would to be to put a
request in the Mart section of
Pano, so I sent in an advertisement
to the Wanted section.
After all, lots of people were
there and maybe someone
would have a picture that they
would share. I never got a
response from my ad, but the
Pano editor took note of my
request and published a picture
of my 912 and me in action at
the Sun Valley autocross.
There, in the September,
1971 issue of the Porsche
Panorama, for all the world to
see forever, is a picture of me
autocrossing with the windshield wipers
on full blast. It was not raining. Be careful
of what you wish for.
In the minds and memories of all who
attended the Sun Valley Parade, it has
always been known as one of the best
ever, especially for its time. I was fortunate
to have been there. I have that 7th
place trophy around here somewhere,
but the memories of the folks who were
there remain today. People such as Dan
Rowzie, Walt Woodhead and Bob Harper
and their friends and family of the
Potomac Region made my first Porsche
Parade a neat experience. My attendance
at 28 Porsche Parades since has added
many more lifetime Porsche friends as
the years have gone by. Check out the
next Parade, wherever it may be held, for
lifetime memories of your own.
Oh, one more thing. I have been practicing
at this autocross thing, and want
you six guys who beat me in Sun Valley
to know that I want a re-match!
Colorado
The Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours
d’Elegance is one of the largest
gatherings of priceless automobiles in
Colorado.
We expect that more than 400 treasured
cars—from early classics and
collector cars to vintage race cars and
current models—will be on display. Many
of these incredible cars come out only
once a year for this show, to help the
Cerebral Palsy children.
of Colorado. Now in its 27th year, the
Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours
d’Elegance has become one of the
grandest, most entertaining and most
anticipated car shows in Colorado!
To date, this spectacular event has
raised over $1,000,000 for United Cerebral
Palsy of Colorado’s Creative Options
Early Education Centers. These five centers
provide early care, intervention,
prevention, support and education services
to expectant mothers and nearly
800 infants, toddlers and pre-school children
and their families each year.
Another 750 children are on waiting
lists.
The Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours
d’Elegance is also a premier
opportunity for corporate sponsors to
experience tremendous exposure for
your company. This prestigious show
reaches a well-educated and influential
audience of car collectors and enthusiasts
as well as the general public. The
kids win and the corporate sponsors win.
Please be a part of it—contact Liz Neafus-Stenzel,
for more information.
There are four ways RMR
members can support our
fundraising:
1) Bring your special cars
out to be judged or displayed.
You can register directly using
the Cerebral Palsy of Colorado
Web site at www.cpco.org:
click on Special Events, then
Exotic Sports Car Show, and
then retrieve the form to register
your car on the following
page. This is an RMR/AMR
Challenge Series Event.
2) Be a spectator. Bring the
family out and enjoy the fabulous
array of Porsches,
Jaguars, Ferraris, Corvettes,
Mercedes-Benzes, BMWs,
Lotuses, Maseratis, as well as
a long list of other marques.
3) Volunteer to help us on
the day of the show. The
exotic car clubs in Denver join
together to host and run this
show so that all of the income
can be provided to help the
children. Just send an e-mail to me, at
abw@woodwardwealth.com, if you have
a few hours to help with registration,
parking cars, judging and scoring, or
working at the entrance gate.
4) Donate a little extra. An additional
$10 per registration would bring in more
than $400 extra from our club. Of
course, even if you don’t register a car,
you can write a separate check to Cerebral
Palsy of Colorado, 801 Yosemite St.,
Denver, CO 80230.
Registration information
All registrations include two event
passes.
Registration Fee: $35.00 per car
Late Registration Fe: $50.00 (cutoff
date to be announced)
Spectator Donation: $10.00
This year, spectator tickets will be
available at participating Shell/Circle K
outlets at $1.00 off the $10.00 face
value.
Porsches will be placed in the following
categories:
Judged – All judging will be
performed on the exterior, interior, storage,
and engine compartments—no
wheel well or undercarriage.
Display – No judging will be
performed.
A complete packet of rules, score
sheets and other information will be
mailed to all entrants one week before
the event.
Judged Porsches will be placed in the
article by Roger Buswell
It all started innocently enough: Veteran RMR and SCCA
member, R Gruppe Hall of Fame inductee and Pelican legend,
Grady Clay, and Roger Buswell (your author) were sharing
breakfast one autumn day in 2007; brainstorming ideas that
included Porsches. Grady dreamed of getting all the factions
who love Porsches together—members of RMR, AMR, Pelican
Parts and Rennlist forum regulars, the Early S Club, 928 fanatics,
SCCA, NASA, RMVR, the 356 Registry—anyone we could
think of who may like to meet for breakfast once a month and
bring their Porsches... an impromptu car show and grassroots
breakfast jamboree. Grady wondered if it could be done. I
wondered how to get the word out to the teeming multitudes.
We laid out a plan, a place, a time and some basic ground
rules. For a few weeks I spent more hours than I care to admit,
sending out electronic invitations, posting on all the forums,
answering questions and compiling the “list.” It became a
labor of love and it looked like it could get pretty big.
Then March 3rd, 2008 arrived and we waited anxiously at
the Village Inn on S. Colorado Blvd. and Mexico. A couple
sleepy-eyed folks stumbled in, then a few more and, before
we knew it, over two dozen car fiends were devouring
flapjacks and talking Porsche on a cold, dark, icy morning. The
next meeting had over sixty people filling half of the restaurant
and over forty Porsches in the parking lot. What a rush!
What a kick! “What a Frankenstein we created?!”
A key objective both Grady and I had from the beginning
was to find the right person to run the show. Our prayers were
answered when RMR member, avid Porsche 928 owner and
popular Rennlister, Erik Behrendsen, stepped forward.
Erik took over and has turned what is now
known as the Porsche Breakfast Club (PBC for
short) into a fountain of world-class fun and fellowship
for scores of Colorado Porsche enthusiasts.
He has artfully melded together many of
Colorado’s Porsche Nation through his übercreative
mind, massive Rolodex and unbridled
energy. He effortlessly organizes day runs,
museum tours, luncheons at cool theme restaurants,
cocktail parties at exotic car galleries,
half-day clinics hosted by car detailing emporiums;
plus he designs club attire on the side. Try to “free
associate” fun car ideas with Erik, and your head
will start spinning; you can’t keep up! The PBC is
even going to host Beer:30 at the June RMR DE.
So why should you care? Because you’re invited,
that’s why! You only need to set up a free Yahoo!
user account (or use your existing one) to join at
the PBC social Web site: autos.groups.yahoo.com/
group/porschebreakfastclub. Click the link to join,
Erik will add your user name to the “list,” and
you’re in. Many regulars are also RMR members,
including RMR Porsche News mainstays Jeremy
Rosenberger and Dick Badler, to name just a couple.
Erik estimates that half of the PBC is also
RMR. There are teenagers and old farts, pretty girls and
homely guys—but most of all, the PBC is friendly Porsche
enthusiasts who want to meet you. Cars have included 928s,
924s, 993s, 951s, 914s, 356s, 996s, 997s, Boxsters, Caymans;
dozens upon dozens of Porsches, old and new, rare and less
rare. Even an outlaw Karmann Ghia, a rogue Ferrari and jetblack
BMW have been known to join in. If you love cars, you’re
the same Village Inn on S. Colorado Blvd. and Mexico. So what
First Ancestor of All Porsche
Sports Cars on Show in
America for the First Time
Stuttgart - The Museum run by Dr. Ing.
h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, Germany, is
sending its legendary Type 64 Berlin-
Rome Car on a long journey. Befitting the
60th anniversary of Porsche in America,
the aluminum body of Type 64 will be
presented from 21 March to 20 June 2010
at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta,
Georgia (USA), taking the first and most
Museum in Zuffenhausen to a new location
outside of Germany for the first time.
The High Museum of Art is one of the
world’s leading art museums. In its special
exhibition “The Allure of the
Automobile”, the High Museum of Art is
expressing its recognition of outstanding
automotive developments in the period
1930 to 1960, focusing on differences in
the development of American and European
design. Type 64 will be presented
next to other icons in the world of the
automobile from Bugatti, Dusenberg,
Jaguar, Ferrari, Pierce Arrow, Packard,
Cadillac and Tucker as a synthesis of
innovative construction and design,
supreme craftsmanship, and exceptional
exceptional performance, reliable technology,
and that unique design so
rmrporschenews April 2010
marks an essential milestone en route to
the first Porsche, Type 356 built in 1948.
The car’s streamlined aluminum body
already showed distinctive indications
later to be admired in all of Porsche’s
sports cars, its DNA living on in the
Porsche 356 through the Porsche 911 all
the way to the Panamera. The symbiosis
of motorsport requirements and the use
of production elements made the car a
perfect grand tourer able to reach an
average speed on public roads back in
1939 of more than 130 km/h or 80 mph.
No surprise, therefore, that Ferdinand
Porsche himself used
Type 64 for long journeys.
Accompanying the new construction
of the Porsche
Museum in Stuttgart-
Zuffenhausen, the aluminum
body of Type 64 was re-built by
experts in years of painstaking
craftsmanship. Ever since the
Museum was opened in January
2009, Type 64 has marked the
beginning of the Museum Tour,
thrilling visitors from all over
the world through its cultural
impact and unique flair alone.
While Type 64 is being presented
to the public in Atlanta,
the Porsche Museum will be displaying
the skeleton structure of the Type 64
body until the end of June 2010—a skeleton
made of wood upon which the
1.2-millimeter aluminum panels were
hammered into shape.
The Porsche Museum is open Tuesdays
to Sundays from 9:00 to 18:00. Further
a confession of sin Rodger Stewart
Please don’t judge me until you hear
my story. I was bewitched. I have been a
lover of Porsches all my life. They turn
my head the way beautiful women turn
the heads of other men. The roundness
of their hips, their subtle curves, that
sensual throatiness of their exhaust
dominated my dreams for years. An
unnatural desire to possess an example
of this classic art form but without the
funds to actually own one drove me to
the unthinkable—I bought a replica!
Wait! Don’t turn this page in disgust. I
can feel your outrage, but hear me out. I
said I loved Porsches.
My first joined my family
years ago—a pale
yellow ‘76 912E. Yes, a
poor man’s Porsche,
but I was a high school
English teacher with
two kids in college.
Sure, she only had four
cylinders, sheepskins
covered her split seats,
and her heater boxes
were cracked. But I
drove her passionately
every day. Clad in four
studded snow tires,
she carried me through
two of the worst winters
in modern history. But her little
heart couldn’t match my lust for driving.
At 175,216 miles it gave out. She
needed replacement surgery. Did I stay
by her side? Did I do the right thing and
nurse her back to health? No! I was a
fickle lover. I wanted something newer,
faster, more luxurious. And something
with a decent heater.
I replaced her with a Guards Red ‘89
Carrera 4. Black leather upholstery, G50
transmission, air conditioning, sunroof,
3.6 liters, and 0-60 in a heartbeat. This
time, I would treat her with the respect
she deserved. While she languished
under her custom cover in the back of
my snug barn, I drove to school watching
snowflakes sift into the cab of my old
Jeep CJ daily driver. Only when the sun
shone brightly and the roads dried did
she leave her sanctuary. Hours I spent
laving her body with expensive creams
and waxes. Dirt and grime never sullied
her perfect frame. But Porsches, as you
know, can be cruel mistresses. One day
16
Rodger Stewart
April 2010
her power suddenly waned drastically. I
knew what it was; I had read about this
flaw in 964’s. A tiny synchro belt
connecting her two distributors had broken,
endangering her beautiful power
plant. I rushed her to the hospital, but it
was too late. She needed a complete
distributor replacement. We had no
health insurance. The bill was astronomical—equal
to the GNP of some small
countries. This time, though, I stayed
true to her. I taught summer school, did
some tutoring. It would be all right. We
would make it through this. But I knew
The 1957 Speedster replica that seduced Rodger Stewart into an act of blasphemy.
this wouldn’t be the last dramatic
episode. I could see in that enigmatic
smile of her bumper that she yearned
for more. She was hooked on cosmetic
surgery. What would it be next? An allwheel-drive
overhaul? New CV joints? A
simple oil change was costing me over
$150. I loved her, but I couldn’t afford
her. I had to break up with her.
Which brings me to my unforgivable
sin. How could I have what my heart
desired and afford to maintain it? I
searched eBay and Craigslist, hoping to
find a gem that some idiot was trying to
give away. Then one day, listed under
356’s, there she was. A perfect reproduction
of a 1957 Porsche Speedster,
exactly like the real one my college
roommate had years ago. Sure, she sat
on a reinforced 1968 Volkswagen frame
and sported a VW engine, but her lines
were pure Speedster, down to that slit of
a windshield and bathtub body. I will
never forget that Saturday night on East
Colfax in 1964 when my roommate said,
“Hold on!” before he made a 90-degree
right turn in that Speedster at 45 MPH.
We didn’t roll. We didn’t spin out. That
little car just turned the corner. It was
amazing! And now I have one, at onesixth
the price of the real thing. Oh sure,
the seats are more comfortable than an
original and the body is fiberglass, but
few can tell she isn’t genuine. She doesn’t
surge forward from stop lights like
the 964. Her top and side curtains are
far from rain- or wind-proof. At 50
degrees with the top down, it’s quite
comfortable—as long as I’m wearing my
cycling tights, a parka, a
wool cap, and ski gloves.
Sure, my wife won’t ride
in it because that rakish
windshield is so low that
the wind molests her hair.
Yes, the heater produces
no discernable heat. Forget
about air conditioning.
But she is such a stunner!
People turn to stare at us.
Little kids point at us out
of car windows. Men smile
enviously and give me the
thumbs up. 356 owners
wave and flash their lights
at us.
I know, though. I drive a
forgery. A false mistress has enchanted
me. How could a loyal PCA member fall
for the perversion of a “kit car”? But I
haven’t turned my back on the marque.
I would still love to be able to afford a
911, Boxster, or Cayman. Perhaps someday
I will. Do I regret this betrayal?
Occasionally. But when I do, I remember
driving back over Loveland Pass from
the Keystone Parade on that lovely summer
afternoon, and the last switchback
before the top, and that tourist with his
camera beside the road, snapping picture
after picture of me as I shot by in
my replica.
in the zone Sean Cridland, PCA Zone 9 Representative
I’ve been kind of
busy with PCA stuff
this winter. Right after
the Zone 9 meeting in
February, I flew out to
San Jose, California for
the PCA National winter
meeting. Although it just sounds like
it’s fun to travel around and see Porsche
people, there is actually a lot of business
that’s done at these meetings each
year. From the perspective of a regular
member, it often appears that all of PCA
can be encapsulated by what goes on in
one’s Region. But when you consider all
the kinds of activities, programs, benefits,
and publications that PCA
generates, things begin to grow almost
exponentially as you go from the
Regional to the Zone to the National
staff and the kinds of policies, decisions,
and responsibility involved.
From a personal perspective, it’s
always great to see my fellow Zone Reps
in person. It’s kind of a strange feeling,
because we talk on the phone monthly
in a conference call, and we often e-mail
one another on various PCA matters, so
we are well familiar with one another.
But we really only see each other as a
group twice a year: once at the winter
meeting and once at the Parade meeting.
So the meeting is both familiar and
strange at the same time.
It’s also good to be able to converse in
person with the various PCA committee
chairs—those whose names you see on
the last pages of Panorama. Believe it or
not, all those people are busy updating
various policy changes and event protocols,
etc., etc., etc. Each one makes a
report during the National board meeting.
This year the RPM (Region
Procedures Manual) had some
significant changes, and the PCR
(Parade Competition Rules) did too.
Parade is undergoing a major change
this year as it moves from a National
event hosted by a Region to a National
event organized and run by the PCA
Parade Committee, but with assistance
from the Regions. San Diego Region
member Tom Brown has taken on this
monumental task and is looking forward
to a successful Parade in St. Charles, Illinois
this year.
Some of my favorite people to talk to
at the National meetings are Leonard
and Betty Jo Turner, editors of Panorama
magazine, the finest car club magazine
in the world. They’re some of the hardest
working people in the Club, having
worked in that position for 40 years or
so without having missed even one
issue during that time.
Web site and Newsletter Chair Jill Beck
in always on my list too, as I’m curious
about the state of communications
within PCA at all the various levels.
Newsletters are in major flux right now,
as printing costs escalate and volunteer
editors are becoming harder and harder
to find. When I discussed this issue with
Jill, she noted that more and more,
many of the Regions will be shifting
away from printed newsletters to an enewsletter
format, very similar to the
E-Brake newsletter you receive from
rmrporschenews April 2010
National every other week now.
If fact, for those of you with iPhones,
PCA now has an app which will direct
you to any Porsche-related information
in any of the Regions, nationwide, as
you travel. That means Regional Web
sites, authorized Porsche dealers, independent
Porsche repair shops,
race-tracks, and any number of other
Porsche related goods and services. Yes,
things are changing that fast.
To use a point of historical
comparison, I can remember taking a
summer course on “The Soviet Union
Today” during the summer of 1989, and
the question came up, “How long before
the Soviet Union breaks up?” It was
unimaginable as anything other than a
discussion topic that summer. But it was
only a couple of years later that the
USSR was a thing of the past. That’s the
point we’re at with communications
technology. Even the larger, richer
Regions are looking at doing away with
their printed newsletters and moving to
the e-model and iPhone apps. Stay
tuned, literally, on this issue.
By the time you read this, I will have
started making my rounds in the Zone
with a visit to Alpine Mountain Region
for their anniversary party and to Llano
Estacado for one of their monthly breakfast
meetings. The Roadrunner Region is
back in business with their traditional
Memorial Day celebration: Fiesta del
Porsche and... Parade is not far behind.
I look forward to seeing you at an
event soon.
“Driver’s Ed. Education: A Series of
Specifics for Success” is an ordered
series of articles prepared for the Redline
Report (Central NY Region
newsletter) by John Hajny. The series is
Article 7:
“Big Mo”
“Big Mo” is your Friend!
Last time we talked about getting that
good, clean, tight late apex that will
increase your acceleration zone. Let’s
assume you’ve learned the line and
drive it pretty consistently at a good
pace. You’ve learned to finish all of your
business before that “Business Cone,”
have a good grasp of where that turn-in
point is (or at least how to find it!), and
have now converted it to the “Acceleration
Cone.” This next theme is going to
become increasingly important as your
speed continues to build: “Trust is a
Must.”
Eventually, most of my students reach a
point where real consistency and speed
are just a breath away. They know the
line and are beginning to notice what
effect their inputs have on the car as it
corners. They now notice what jumping
on the throttle to begin cornering acceleration
is doing to their line (it throws
the front end away from the apex!), and
they feel those minute twitches in the
tail end that they didn’t before. When
the student starts to correctly critique
their own driving, I know we are really
close. But once again, just when you
thought you had it down, I’m going to
throw another curveball at you.
When you’ve reached a certain point in
your driving, that deep, late turn-in
we’ve been pounding into your brain
may not be the best line to take into a
corner. It was designed to keep you on
the track surface and out of the weeds
until you learned the basics, but it is not
the be-all and end-all of cornering theory.
Ultimately, you need to learn to
drive the way that works best for you
and your car.
If you are beginning to carry more speed
into that late turn-in area, you may likely
find that this is making it difficult to
reach a tight apex. The car is drifting
wide and you find yourself really crank-
18
April 2010
ing the steering wheel trying to get over
there, and the result is a lot of front-end
push and that old, “I’m running out of
track-out” feeling. It’s likely time to
modify that late turn-in a bit, and to
develop Trust.
At this point, I instruct my students to
start turning in a little earlier so that
they can reach that tight apex that is so
important. It now becomes a balance
between the point where they turn, and
the amount of Momentum they are willing
to carry. At first, the earlier turn-in
will cause a perceived early apex situation,
which obviously is very unnerving,
and will entice you to steer away from
your apex. But, you do not want to do
that, do you? Now is the ultimate
moment... when “Trust is a Must”, and
“Momentum is our Friend!”
“Big Mo?”
Now you’re talking
my language!
Now that we’ve begun to turn in a little
earlier to tighten our apexes, we need
once again to fight that improper
reflex—to turn away from that apex!
This is a potentially dangerous time in
your “driving career,” because you have
learned enough to begin driving with
some decent pace, you’ve learned that
the car is much more capable than you,
but you have not necessarily developed
confidence in the amount of momentum
you can safely carry through the turns.
With that extra speed you’ve developed,
this is the time to really concentrate
hard and use those car-feel senses to
the max.
Assuming smooth technique (as
always!), virtually every car will initially
understeer mildly in a turn. We have
learned to mitigate that “push” by turning
decisively, and to quell any chance
of sudden oversteer by accelerating
smoothly. This sets the car on its
suspension evenly. When one reaches
perhaps 85% of the car’s capability, if
one has been tactful, the car will gradu-
ally ease into a four-wheel drift and ultimately
begin to oversteer slightly. How
much oversteer is a matter of how well
you’ve combined the ingredients.
Believe it or not, this is the point we are
trying to reach... Trust Me!
By driving the car past initial push,
through drift, and on to mild oversteer,
we have now begun to rotate the back
of the car around that apex and to effectively
point the car up the next
straightaway earlier than if the car were
drifting or understeering. This is the
principle that has made the 911 so
effective in racing, and that makes the
914 such a dynamite autocrosser, but it
can be done with any car that is properly
set up and driven. You may have
heard it said that, “A Loose Car is a Fast
Car,” and this is true, but now is not the
time to realize that you should have
already developed that sensitive throttle
foot! Incidentally, if you are having difficulty
tuning your car to this slightly
loose state, it’s time for an adjustable
rear sway bar to tighten the rear of the
car to the right degree for comfortable
and manageable oversteer.
So, if you have a good fix on how much
speed to enter a turn with, know where
and how much to steer, how much throttle
to add, and how to maintain that
cornering balance you’ve set, hang on
and enjoy the ride! If you’ve set all
these things up properly, simple minute
throttle and steering inputs will arc you
by that apex like you were driving on
rails. Guess what...
… you are!
Ladies’ Day is coming!
Mark your calendars now for the
RMR/PCA annual Ladies’ Day Drivers Ed
Event Saturday, July 17th at High Plains
Raceway. This is a day just for us “girls.”
We get to do the driving, testing and
improving our skills on a great track. The
guys get to come be our “pit crews” and
support staff.
You need not be a member of the
Porsche Club to drive in this event—you
just need to be of the female
persuasion! You don’t even have to
drive the Porsche—bring the car that
you are comfortable driving. We will
have driving instructors for those who
are new to the track—I’ve been told
that this is the instructors’ favorite
event because we all
have so
what this track stuff
is all about and to
have fun. So, bring
a friend, a mom, a
site. Oh sure, barely a day goes by when
some Millennial in a rice-can yells over to
do a stoplight Grand Prix. But that’s so
common it doesn’t even register a point
gain on my blood pressure meter. And
I’ve found that I can solve the problem by
simply looking distracted, by not looking
across at who’s resonating the tin-can
exhaust, and by not making eye contact.
If that’s “being oblivious,” I’ll take it.
No, most of the events I recall have
been positive… or at least humorous.
Like the time I came into our cul-de-sac
to find two teenage boys waving and
pointing at me… and then following me
on foot to my garage. Turns out they
were friends of my then-teenage daughter,
and they just wanted to get a good
look at my ride. Which I gave them.
Along with these parting words; “Work
hard—long and hard—and you, too, can
drive one of these, one of these days.”
I was quite proud of myself.
My best story happened years ago…
1978, to be exact. My wife and I were in
our brand-new-to-us 914—a ‘76 2.0,
white, perfect condition, with the Porsche
stripe spelled out on the sides. I never
should have sold it, and only did because
she got pregnant with our first daughter
a few years later. We were in rural central
Pennsylvania, not far off I-80 (a fairly new
stretch of Interstate at that time). We
were getting gas.
For some reason, I opened both the
front and rear trunks—to get something
out, or shift our load, I don’t remember
why. Just then, the gas station attendant
sauntered over. He took a good, hard
look at us, looked at the two open trunks,
looked at us again, and asked, “Hey,
where’s the engine?”
I should have told him it was flummoxpowered—ran
on a mixture of angel hair
and suntan lotion, embedded in the
wheels. But I didn’t. I didn’t want to give
us Porsche-pushers a bad name.
Then again, there’s the story of my
one-time friend from New York. He really
was a true enthusiast, but he had a few
screws loose. His family had done very
well. They had a Rolls-Royce. He said he
borrowed it one day and happened to
cross one of the bridges over Long Island
Sound. At the toll booth, he rolled down
the window and asked the attendant if he
had change for a hundred.
He drove a Vette, and his vanity license
plates read “WLDKRZGI.” Get it?
We lost track of each other, years ago,
and I haven’t looked him up on Facebook.
community in Virginia. Although I
wouldn’t classify my father as an enthusiast,
he’s had a string of nice cars, mostly
Mercedes and BMW. He currently drives a
5-Series.
The last time we visited, he was letting
off steam that others in the community
were “noting” that the Badlers were highflyers,
since they could afford a BMW. I
stared at my father and said, you should
you live in a place where people say
that? You can, and should, drive anything
you want. Especially if it makes you
happy. Especially at this stage in your
life.
My father nodded.
So I told him about the episode of Seinfeld,
when Jerry visits his parents in
South Florida. Suddenly, it’s 4 PM, and
someone says it’s time for the early bird
dinner… where should we go? Jerry rolls
his eyes and says something to the effect
of, “Can’t we wait for, at least, 6 PM?”
And the character, played by that great
character actor Sandy Baron, says, “Big
shot! Eats at 6 PM! Excuse me!”
I told my parents not to move to South
Florida. Or back to New York. And don’t
make eye contact at stoplights.
what we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have
fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses,
rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. Each year RMR organizes a variety of opportunities
to enjoy and learn about your Porsche.
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in
which participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in
advance). A tour may vary in length from a day
trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or
two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are
plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or
obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined
with rallies to add variety and a dose of
competition to the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR typically
offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which contestants
attempt to follow a course specified by a
set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on
public, paved roads, and speed limits are always
observed. The two major types of rallies are the
Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick
rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to
follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the
correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving
at checkpoints (the locations of which are not
known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally
is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves
solving puzzles of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at
least one of each type—are offered. Porsche
Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a
Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined by
orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top
speeds are generally moderate, topping out
around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear
for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at
long intervals—typically only one or two cars are
on the course at any time. Autocross is a safe
way to experience high-performance driving
while learning to drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity to
reconnect with old friends and meet new members.
Historically, a membership meeting begins
with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by
the evening’s program. The content of the program
varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show”
from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as
accomplished Speed World Challenge racer
Randy Pobst.
RMR’s membership socials, unless otherwise
stated, are held the first Thursday of the month.
Different venues and topics will keep the meetings
fresh and inviting. Watch RMR Porsche News
and the RMR Web site for details. And if you
have any ideas for a program, talk to the Program
Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like—a session
in which a technical topic is discussed. Not
just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate
practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such
as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented
by experienced Porsche technicians,
24
Driving Events
Non-Driving Events
April 2010
an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX
school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a
major event at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe, controlled
environment for high-performance driving
instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the
opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the
help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled,
closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA
philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is
on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE
experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However,
some DE events are followed immediately by a
time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to
quantify their performance. Lap times may then
be used to measure personal improvement, for
bragging rights, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the
La Junta, Pueblo, and (possibly in the future)
Pikes Peak International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A
race weekend consists of a number of practice
sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often
involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.
As a Club Racing license (issued by PCA
National) is required for competition, club racers
are serious and experienced drivers. The cars
they bring with them to the track can be quite
impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club
Racing program was inaugurated with the RMRhosted
“First Ever Anywhere” club race at
Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event of
this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of
volunteers. However, a club race is also one of
most exciting events to participate in, so be sure
to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each year at High
Plains Raceway which, combined with the “Super
DE” event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!
many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and
RMR Porsche News.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically
in the “off months” when few driving events
take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions
are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in as
close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number
of judged categories usually exist, typically
differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,
Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver”
or “full preparation” or somewhere in between).
Cars sometimes may be entered as “display
only,” for owners who wish to participate but not
compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local concours
events each year, including the annual Exotic
Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting
United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The
annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours
each year.
