Hugo van Lawick
Hugo van Lawick is
one of the world’s
most famous wildlife
cameramen. During
his life he made over
forty films, wrote
seven books and
won eight Emmy awards.
Van Lawick developed his great love of
animals growing up in Indonesia. From an
early age he knew he wanted to become
a wildlife cameraman. In 1956 van Lawick
worked on location in Kenya as a
photographer and cinematographer for
various film companies. A couple of years
later the National Geographic Magazine
sent him to the Gombe reserve in Tanzania
to record the discoveries of the primate
expert Jane Goodall. This was the start
of a long and creative relationship,
professionally and personally. Over twenty
years van Lawick filmed the lives of three
generations of chimpanzees. Out of these
hundreds of hours of film material van
Lawick made the well-known film
‘People of the Forest’.
For more than twenty years van Lawick
operated from Camp Ndutu in the
Serengeti, the great wildlife reserve in
Tanzania. He spent his time looking for
unusual animal stories happening in the
Serengeti, which he then tried to capture
on film.
With the dramatic build-up in his films and
by emphasising the individuality of the
animals, van Lawick succeeded in
engaging cinema audiences worldwide
in films such as ‘Serengeti Symphony’
and ‘The Leopard Son’.
The images used in this Wildlife DVD come
from the van Lawick collection and are a
cross-section of his output.
Hugo van Lawick died in Dar es Salaam
on 2 June 2002 at the age of 65.

The quick rules
These are, in brief, the most important rules of the game.
1. How do you win the game?
The player who first reaches the finish with his or her jeep wins the game.
2. Gaining cards
Following a question each of the players will, with one of the answer discs, select A, B or C.
Who answered correctly can take a card of the stack.
3. Playing cards
Following the fourth question the “taking cards, swapping and driving” screen will appear.
The player now located farthest from the end point, will start.
• When it is your turn you can ask the other players to exchange cards with you.
• At the end of your turn you cannot have more than five cards.
• If you play your cards you can obstruct another player or you can drive your jeep.
What effect do the obstruction cards have?
Film Canister
Choose a player and take one card out of his or her hand.
Flat Tyre
Choose a player and let him or her skip a turn.
Camouflage Tent This will block a Film View or a Flat Tyre.
How do you drive your jeep?
• With the lion, buffalo, elephant, cheetah, rhinoceros and binoculars cards you can drive.
• Hand in the same combination of animal cards you see on the film point and subsequently
drive there.
• With a binoculars you spot an animal as desired: lion, buffalo, elephant, cheetah or rhinoceros.
• You need to follow the road and can only stop at a film point.
• You drive to the first empty film point you encounter on your way.
• One jeep will be allowed per film point.
• In the event a film point is occupied by another player you can drive on to the following free
film point.
• If you can play various card combinations you can drive to various film points.

Go on safari in the Serengeti!
What is the aim of the game?
In Wildlife, you go on safari in your jeep
through the African wildlife park the
‘Serengeti’, in Tanzania. Your aim is to
be the first player to spot the ‘Big Five’,
by moving around the game board and
finishing first. The ‘Big Five’ are the five
most famous dangerous animals you will
find in the Serengeti. These are: leopard,
buffalo, rhinoceros, lion and elephant.
To spot animals and to move forwards,
you require playing cards. You win playing
cards by answering questions correctly.
The questions are shown on the DVDs
and relate to the short film clips.
Along the route on the game board, you
will see animals in certain spaces. We call
these spaces view points. If you play your
playing cards with the animals pictured at
the view point, you may drive there. In this
way, you try to follow the route through the
Serengeti as quickly as possible. The
player who is first to reach the final view
point with the complete set of ‘Big Five’
cards is the winner. But watch out,
because the other players will do their
best to stop you.

7
Explanation of Contents
The DVDs
The DVDs contain the film clips and trivia
quiz questions that you watch and play
during the game. DVD 1 contains the first
hundred film clips and DVD 2 the second
hundred. You can play either DVD 1 or 2.
The films are shown in random order per
DVD.
The game board
The aim is to be the first to drive from your
starting position [fig. 1, page 11] to the finish
[fig. 2] in your jeep. To pass the finish, you
have the complete set of the ‘Big Five’
cards. The game board consists of roads,
view points and ‘Big Five’ areas [fig. 3]. You
drive along the road to the view points. At
a view point, you spot animals. Sometimes
a ‘Big Five’ moment appears unexpectedly
on the DVD. If your jeep is in the stated
‘Big Five’ area, this may have favourable
or unfavourable consequences which are
shown on the DVD.
The jeeps
You use these to drive along the road
[fig. 4] between view points. Only 1 jeep
may be located at each view point. If a
jeep belonging to another player is already
occupying a view point, you may drive on
to the next ‘free’ view point. This can be
used strategically during play.
The answer discs [fig. 5]
Each player has three answer discs
[A, B and C] in their colour, which they
use to choose an answer to a quiz
question by selecting the corresponding
letter to answer.
The playing cards
There are two types of playing cards. You
use the animal cards [fig. 6] to move your
jeep. The obstacle cards showing either a
film clip or flat tyre are used to hinder other
players. The camouflage tent to allows you
to protect yourself against these cards.
The figures referred to in the text
are shown at the end of this
rules booklet.

8
Start of the game
Place the game board on a table. Shuffle the
pack of playing cards and place them face
downwards in the middle of the game board.
Each player chooses a colour and takes the
three answer discs and a jeep.
The jeeps are now placed on the starting
positions 1 - 4. The order of play is decided
by the players’ birthdays. The player whose
birthday comes first after the day you are
playing puts their jeep on position 1. The
player whose birthday comes next puts
their jeep on position 2 etc.
Place DVD 1 in the DVD player. One of the
players operates the remote control of the
DVD. Watch the introductory film clip to set
the scene and select your language, then
press ‘ok/enter’ on the remote control. You
are now in the main menu and the game can
begin [fig. 7].
How to play the game
If you select ‘start game’ [fig. 8] in the main
menu with the remote control and press
‘ok/enter’ the game begins. First you watch
a film. This is followed by four multiple choice
questions about this animal or this subject.
Some of the questions you will know, others
you will need to guess. Those who give the
correct answer to the question with an
answer disc may pick up a playing card.
After the fourth question, you may swap or
use your animal or obstacle cards and move
your jeep accordingly. You then continue the
game by pressing ‘ok/enter’. The next film
starts.
The question screen [fig. 9]
When a question appears, you have 15
seconds to decide on your answer. You
choose answer A, B or C with one of your
answer discs. Keep your choice secret.
The answer appears on the screen after
15 seconds. Those who have not chosen
an answer by then may no longer do so.
Game variation: If you fi nd 15 seconds
too short, you can press ‘pause’ [ ].
The question will then remain on the screen.

9
Once everybody has answered, continue
by pressing ‘ok/enter’.
The answer screen [fig. 10]
Check whether you have given the right
answer. If you wish to see the question
again, press ‘back’ and if you wish
to continue, press ‘ok/enter’.
Take cards screen [fig. 11]
If you have answered correctly, pick up
a playing card from the pile. You have 5
seconds to do this. Press ‘pause’ [ ] if
you find this too fast. The next film starts
automatically.
The players do nothing yet with their cards
and jeeps. Only after the fourth question,
cards can be played and the jeep can be
moved accordingly.
Take and exchange cards, and
drive screen [fig. 12]
If you have answered correctly, pick up
a playing card from the pile. The player
whose turn it is first may swap or use
playing cards and then move his jeep.
The order of play is determined by the
position of the jeeps on the game board.
Once the last player has had his turn and
everybody is ready, press ‘ok/enter’.
The next film starts.
The order of play
The position of the space where your
jeep is determines when your turn comes.
Because as the jeeps are moved, the order
changes during the game. The player
whose jeep is furthest from the finish has
the first turn. Who has the 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th
turn is decided in the same way. You use
the spaces to determine this. These are
indicated by dotted lines [fig. 13]. If you are
equally far away, the player whose jeep is
nearest the outside of the game board
has the first turn [fig. 14].
When the game starts, the players have
their jeeps on positions 1 - 4. The player at
position 1 has the first turn, as his jeep is
furthest from the finish. After that comes
the player at position 2. His jeep is as far
from the finish as those of the players at
positions 3 and 4, but is also the closest
to the outside [fig. 15].

10
Rules for swapping playing cards
You may only ask other players to swap
playing cards when it is your turn. Players
decide the exchange rates themselves. It
is not compulsory to swap playing cards.
Using your playing cards
By using your playing cards, you can move
your jeep and/or hinder other players. You
can use all the playing cards you have, in
the order or combination of your choice.
It is sometimes clever to wait before using
your playing cards to watch other players
strategy. At the end of your turn, you may
not keep more than five playing cards for
the next turn. You must place any extra
playing cards unused at the bottom of
the stack [fig. 16].
There are two types of playing cards:
animal cards and obstacle cards.
special animal card. You can use this to
spot an animal of your choice [fig. 17].
The rules for moving your jeep:
You must follow the road and you may only
stop at a view point [fig. 18]. Only 1 jeep may
be located at each view point. If another
player is already occupying a view point,
you may drive on to the next ‘free’ view
point [fig. 19]. You cannot move backwards.
If you can play more than one card
combination, you may move to several
view points [fig. 20].
Obstacle cards
You can use these cards to hinder each
other or to defend yourself.
Once you have played an obstacle card,
you replace it at the bottom of the pile of
playing cards.
Animal cards:
You use these playing cards to spot the
animals at a view point. Hand in the same
combination of animal cards as you see
at the view point. Then move your jeep to
this view point. The pair of binoculars is a

Film Clip
Choose a player and take a playing card
from his hand. You may not see his playing
cards.
The winner of the game [fig. 22]
The player who reaches the finish first
by showing the ‘Big Five’ with his playing
cards is the winner.
Flat tyre
Choose a player to miss a turn. This
player may not swap cards or move his
jeep during that turn. If the player has more
than five playing cards, the surplus must
be discarded.
Camouflage tent
If another player plays a film clip or flat tyre
card against you, you can block this action
by playing this card. Afterwards, place
both cards at the bottom of the pile.
Big Five moment [fig. 21]:
Sometimes a ‘Big Five’ moment appears
unexpectedly on the DVD. If your jeep is
in the stated ‘Big Five’ area, this may have
favourable or unfavourable consequences.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
General instructions for using the
remote control
This game is operated by using the remote
control. The buttons displayed on the
screen can be selected by pressing the
arrows (navigation buttons) on the remote
control. Selection is confirmed by pressing
the ‘OK’ or ‘Enter’ button.
The ‘Menu’ can be selected at any point
during the game. This stops the game
before the main menu screen is displayed.
Using the “Prev” [ ] and ‘Next’ [ ]
buttons is not recommended as it gives an
unpredictable result.
Films are played in the order that they are
selected. On some DVD players it is not
possible to play films in selected order
because this DVD has been incorrectly
configured. Please visit our website for
instructions on how to select the order
of play. If you feel that time is passing to
quickly then press the pause button [ ].
If you want to see a film, question or

12
answer again you can do this by selecting
the back button on the remote control.
Figuren
[fig. 1]
This will not be possible if you are in a
‘Taking, swapping and driving cards’ screen.
When the game is over you can return to
the DVD menu [ MENU ]. You are now able to
start a new game.
The DVD remembers the films you have
seen during each round. When you have
seen all 100 films you will automatically
come to the end of the DVD. To continue,
please insert the other DVD.
