Friday 15 July 2011
Dear Parents/ Carers,
Well done to the children (and parents) who took part in the Tesco bag
pack on Saturday. In the two hours they were at the store they managed
to raise over £100! When I popped along they were busy packing bags
and being very helpful, representing the school so well.
Grow £1
In our final push to raise the required money to start construction on the
MUGA there will be a summer holiday grow £1 challenge for children in
Reception – Year 5. Each child is being sent home with a letter and £1 to
grow. The letter explains what they need to do. There is no obligation to
take part just return the £1 in September if not.
Child Protection and Domestic Violence and Abuse
As the schools designated Child Protection Officer, I attended training yesterday on Domestic Violence and
Abuse. Parents may not be aware that this issue affects 1:3 women and 1:6 men at some point during their
lives. The impact of domestic violence and abuse can be significant on children affecting their learning and
behaviour. As a school we have a a clear set of guidelines to support families in this area and I am always
available to talk to parents or carers who have concerns.
Coastal Cafe
It was great to see such an amazing
number of parents at our cafe yesterday,
the children enjoyed showing their parents
around the displays and sharing their
learning with them. Many thanks for the
positive comments left by parents, they are
much appreciated as organising and
hosting such an event is very hard work as
you can imagine!
into at the end of the school day. This will be followed by our Year 6 Leavers BBQ which will finish at 7pm.
Parent Questionnaire
Many thanks to everyone who returned a questionnaire, these are being collated and a summary of findings will
be shared with parents in September. Some general questions were raised which I thought would be good to
remind everyone through the newsletter. They were;
How does the school promote good behaviour?
This would be a good question to ask children, in summary we use praise wherever possible, the whole ethos of
the school is set up to promote good behaviour and learning. A recent visit from an advisor noted that behaviour
was ‘outstanding’ throughout the school. On the systems side children all have 30 minutes Golden Time each
week. In Golden Time they get to choose what activities they do from a selection agreed by the teacher, minutes
are lost for poor behaviour but can be earned back. Good lunchtime behaviour is rewarded with Silver Stars,
when the class has reached their target they can choose as a class what they would like to do for their reward
and vote. We use Time Out as a sanction; children who have lost Golden Time and repeat poor behaviour within
the same session or on rare occasions hurt another child are given Time Out. This is done at lunchtime where
they loose age related minutes. If a child goes into the book three times in a term a letter is sent home. No
letters have been sent this year!
How does the school use the survey to measure effectiveness?
We compare results year on year, questions are also added to assess the impact of new actions taken by the
school. Where significant dissatisfaction is raised with something the school takes steps to improve.
What do we seek to learn from the pupil questionnaire?
This is the same as above, their opinions on areas are used to help inform, along with other evidence, the
direction of the school improvement plan. They also help us to assess the impact of changes. E.g this year we
have focused on pupils taking more responsibility and the questionnaire has shown that pupils feel they have a
good level of responsibility.
Scooters
It’s great that the children are scooting to school, such a great way to start the day. We are however a bit over
run with them at the moment! Would children please leave them alongside the wall by the bike rack. Many
thanks.
Yours sincerely
