Once you have food, shelter, … (Maslow’s subsistance needs 1 ) people move on to<br />

social needs, esteem needs, and "self-actualization" - using their cognitive surplus<br />

(the energy and knowledge that isn’t used <strong>for</strong> your "job")- page 189 of [35]<br />

Hence the importance of:<br />

• community<br />

• visibility<br />

• because I like to do it ("fun")<br />

These are driving <strong>for</strong>ces behind open source software/hardware, web pages, social<br />

networks, Wikipedia, … .<br />
