Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs)<br />

Traditional applications generally assumed that to some degree there was:<br />

(1) end-to-end connectivity, (2) low round trip time, and<br />

(3) access to naming/caching/searching/… infrastructures.<br />

Delay Tolerant Networks do not require these assumptions, thus nodes can<br />

communicate using an opportunistic exchange of messages (think of the messages<br />

as a propagating virus - moving from host to host) ⇒ epidemic routing<br />

protocols[15].<br />

Key issues include [16]:<br />

• What application layer data units are bundled into the DTN-layer<br />

protocol bundles <strong>for</strong> transport?<br />

• Actual mobility patterns (social networks, commuting patterns, … )<br />

Metrics include [16]: Delivery ratio, Delivery Delay, and Delivery Cost<br />
