Internetworking
Internetworking is
• based on the interconnection (concatenation) of multiple networks
• accommodates multiple underlying hardware technologies by providing
a way to interconnect heterogeneous networks and makes them
inter-operate.
We will concern ourselves with one of the most common internetworking
protocols IP (there are other internetworking protocols, such as Novell’s
Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX), Xerox Network Systems (XNS), IBM’s
Systems Network Architecture (SNA), OSI’s ISO-IP).
We will examine both IP:
• version 4 - which is in wide use
• version 6 - which is coming into use
