Maker (<strong>for</strong> authentication), Length, and Type are common to all BGP messages.<br />

• Version = 4<br />

• My autonomous system - the AS number<br />

• Hold time - maximum time to wait <strong>for</strong> a keepalive or update, otherwise the other party is<br />

considered to be dead<br />

• BGP identifier - identifies the router sending this message (typically its IP address)<br />

• Option length - zero if none<br />

• Option - options in the <strong>for</strong>m (length of parameter, parameter value)<br />
