Split Horizon<br />

To counter the count to infinity, the split horizon algorithm - never sends<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation on an interface that it learned from this interface.<br />

RIPv1 implements: Split Horizon with Poison Reverse Update - rather that not<br />

advertise routes to the source, we advertise them with a metric of 16 (i.e.,<br />

unreachable) - hence the source simply ignores them.<br />

Un<strong>for</strong>tunately split horizon only prevents loops between adjacent routers (so if<br />

there are three or more routers involved the previous problem re-appears)<br />
