Routing packets in the Internet
Router needs to know where to route packets, to do this they need routing
information. Such information can be provided by manually entered routes or
ICMP Redirect or learning of routes via a routing protocol.
Dynamic routing protocols are based on routers talking to each other.
• Intradomain - within an AS (aka Interior Gateway protocols)
• Interdomain - between ASs (aka Exterior Gateway protocols)
The most popular dynamic routing protocols are:
• RIP-1 - Routing Information Protocol (version 1)
• RIP-2 - Routing Information Protocol (version 2)
• OSPF - Open Shortest Path First
• BGP - Border Gateway Protocol
