Fields relevant to Fragmentation<br />

• Identification (16 bits)<br />

• Identification + source IP address uniquely identifies each datagram sent by a host<br />

⇒ Identification field is copied to all fragments of a datagram upon fragmentation<br />

(since they are all part of the same original datagram)<br />

• Flags: 3 bits<br />

• Reserved Fragment (RF) - set to 0<br />

• Don’t Fragment (DF)<br />

– Set to 1 if datagram should not be fragmented<br />

– If set and fragmentation needed ⇒ datagram will be discarded and an error message<br />

will be returned to the sender<br />

• More Fragments (MF)<br />

– Set to 1 <strong>for</strong> all fragments, except the last<br />

• Fragmentation Offset (13 bits)<br />

• 8-byte units: (i.e., the byte offset is ip_frag
