Direct vs. indirect Delivery<br />

• Direct delivery<br />

• The final destination is (directly) connected to the<br />

same physical network as the sender<br />

• IP destination address and local interface have the<br />

same netmask<br />

• Map destination IP address to destination physical<br />

address via ARP<br />

• Indirect delivery<br />

• From router to router (note: the last delivery is always<br />

direct!)<br />

• Destination address is used <strong>for</strong> a routing lookup in a<br />
