PPP: Point to Point Protocol<br />

PPP (RFCs 1331[18]&1332[19]) corrects the deficiencies in SLIP and consists of:<br />

• encapsulation <strong>for</strong> either async or synchronous links,<br />

• HDLC (see RFC 1549)<br />

• X.25 (see RFC 1598)<br />

• ISDN (see RFC 1618)<br />

• SONET/SDH (see RFC 1619)<br />

• Link Control Protocol<br />

• establish, configure, and test data-links [includes option negociation]<br />

• authentication (see RFC 1334)<br />

• Family of Network Control Protocols (NCPs) - specific to different<br />

network protocols, currently:<br />

• IP (see RFC 1332)<br />

• DECnet (see RFC 1376)<br />

• OSI network layer (see RFC 1377)<br />

• AppleTalk (see RFC 1378)<br />

• XNS (see RFC 1764)<br />
