Editor’s Comments:
Well hopefully those that can have been getting a nice sun tan. Talk about topsy turvy weather. More
record high temperatures up in Scotland and more heat already this year than we usually have in a
whole year (if any). Then from getting burnt with 27 o on Sunday 27 th it went abruptly to 9 o under leaden
skies on Monday and stayed there with drizzle....no gradual cooling down, still that’s Scotland. Typical
as that was when the windows started, so much more pleasant for the fitters, not so us with big holes
in the wall for a week. Still after a couple of years of disruption with roof & windows finished we can at
last look forward (not sure if that’s the right description) to decorating. Hopefully someone will buy
Chris’s house down south as we have put it back on the market and we can then settle down in one
place for a while.
Anyway that’s enough of that, with so many open days and preservation galas etc there has been a
flurry of articles of topical interest and I have been struggling to fit it all in around the ongoing series.
So apologies but Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast - 1964 Part 10 and AC Locos in Preservation -
Part 2 already written have been shunted to next month. Still that makes editing the next few months
easier with plenty of articles already penned including a couple of interesting infrastructure articles
from Mark Richards, one of which is started this month.
Errata: Dave Spencer’s Railway Globetrotter articles in the last two issues should really have been
entitled Scandinavia not Belgium !!
Gremlins (and my typing fingers) struck Stock Changes where the Pendolino re-numberings got a bit
confusing: 39107 should be 390107 and 391054/055/056 should be 390154/155/156.
Open Day Reports & Diesel Galas
Appleby Frodingham Railway by Trevor Roots and Neil Dix:
The Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society (ARFPS) held a diesel weekend over the
weekend of 12 th / 13 th May in the steelworks owned by TATA Steel, Scunthorpe. Day membership was
made available to non-members. The society has a four road depot located within the steelworks and
is only visible from trains run on their infrequent open days. This was a location I have wanted to visit
for some time and fortunately this open event coincided with my regular trip south so after an
overnight stay at Ferrybridge services, I was able to visit on the Sat morning. I hoped to view all the
ex-BR stock, but with no idea of the layout I wasn't sure what I would see. The entrance is via Gate D
to the steelworks and there was ample parking. The society operates from adjacent the road from a
short single faced platform named Frodingham. The station has a run round loop with a short
headshunt, occupied by the catering Mk1 4668. It is possible to view workings from the road and
around into the Gate D entrance, a distance of about 100m.
Trains were booked to run every 30 mins from 10.00-16.00 though times slipped. The trains were
operated alternatively with either loco + DMU (56207/59245) + LMS inspection saloon DM395280 or
loco + 3 brake vans (7605/955160/993829). Some trains were top & tailed. Locos used were resident
ex-BR diesels D2853, 07012 and a brief outing for D2128 (see below), plus ex-industrial shunters
No.1 [2877] YE 0-6-0DE and [2661] YE 0-4-0DE ‘Arnold Machin’. Some of TATAs own shunter fleet,
namely Nos.3 & 80 were also called into action as was 08737 the resident DBS Cl.08, but not the
HNRC Cl.20s, which were out of action. D2128 was still under repair and its availability and therefore
reliability was in doubt, as proved to be the case.
Itinerary: (12 th May) – services in red assumed not to have run due to slippage and services in blue
planned but not seen switched to later times. The 12.20 (clockwise) & 13.00 (anticlockwise) services
swapped 08737 midway on passing.
The tour trains took almost an hour to go around and generally went in a clockwise circuit of the site
passing the AFRPS depot en-route, where unfortunately no stop was made to alight. I decided not to
go on the tour so as to photograph the different trains from the station and also as we were travelling
south I had to leave after the 12.30 departure. However Neil did travel on the 12.30 train but as he
says "I can't really tell you much about the tour as it was packed and we didn't get a window seat". I
can concur on that as we did get in the 11.00 DMU and it was very busy with people making several
trips and therefore finding room was difficult. The best view was probably from the brake vans, the
12.00 was not that packed and we were nearly tempted.
Neil was fortunate enough to be taken to view the AFRPS depot where he saw D2128, [3151] 'Richard
No.5' and [1438] Peckett 0-4-0ST. He was also able to view the outside of the TATA steel loco shed
where could be seen the two HNRC Cl.20's, highline shunters No's 2 & 5 plus 0-6-0 No. 51 and Bo-Bo
No.77, which was off of its bogies and sat on a well wagon.
“We left the shed around 15.00
and were back on the station by
15.10. At 15.16 TATA No. 80
came up to the platform and
coupled up to the Brake Vans.
We boarded the Shark brake van
993829 next to the loco and went
around for a second trip. At 16.15
we stopped near the AFRPS
shed and to witness D2128 +
‘Arnold Machin’ + coach + DMU
arrive. D2128 having failed was
then detached and pushed back
into the depot.”
Long Marston by Neil Dix:
In September 2011, Long Marston held their 'Final' open weekend. Like many other people, I didn't
expect to be visiting the site again for a number of years due to some major redevelopments that were
due to take place. It was therefore an unexpected pleasure to be able to visit the site again on May 5 th
as part of a private tour.
The railway sidings in the Long Marston complex are split into 7 different yards (A to G) plus the
exchange sidings and Network Rail connection from Honeybourne. Already some changes have taken
place, none more so than near to where the tour began at the Campden Road entrance. Beyond the
gate, the sidings of 'F' Yard have been lifted and the area cleared (see below).
lifted tracks in the yard
Further on however, we found that
the sidings in C, D, E & G Yards
were still in situ and it was this part
of the site that had the most variety.
From a locomotive perspective,
there was the line up of class 86s
and 87s, including 86424 that had
arrived just days earlier. Coaching
stock included Arriva Mk2s, Virgin
Mk3s, Driving Van Trailers, Mk3
Sleepers and Nightstar Generator
Vans. The freight stock consisted
mainly of 2 axle and bogie tanker
wagons, Freightliner FRA container
flats and ex CAIB PNAs.
line-up of electric
locos headed by 86424
13

ex-Virgin WC Mk3 12165
ex-Virgin WC DVT 82123 with 82138
From here it was back to the cars for a drive across the site to the Europhoenix workshops. The area
around the workshops includes A & B Yards, the triangle and test area which is where a section of
track with overhead line is located. At the 2011 open weekend much of this area was just grass
however some of this land is now being prepared for the laying of new trackwork. This part of the site
contains more stored locomotives along with 2 of the Pendolino carriages damaged in the Lambrigg
accident. We were invited to look into the Europhoenix workshops. Inside was 86217, 87023 and 2
minilok's whilst 87017 could be found just outside the workshop doors.
Moving on again, we made our way around to the exchange sidings and control tower. This area
would be most familiar to anyone who has attended any of the open days in the past. The sidings here
now mostly contain stored wagons and coaches along with a few industrial shunting locomotives. It is
estimated there are around 5 miles of sidings in this area and I can certainly believe it. We were able
to obtain a full stock list from the control tower and even though much has left Long Marston in recent
months, there is still almost 600 items on site!
Overall it was an enjoyable day out and the weather was kind. A big thank you goes out to Motorail
Logistics CEO, Ruth Flack-Dunmore for taking the time to show us around. It should also be
mentioned that the team at Long Marston do a lot for charity and this was no exception. The money
raised from this event went to another of their good causes.
There is a lot more work to do before any more open weekends can take place here, but if and when
they do hold another event I would certainly recommend going - just be prepared for a lot of walking!
Swanage Diesel Gala, 12 th & 13 th May 2012 by Carl Watson:
Fate can be cruel and despite valiant attempts by all parties, the convoy of locos due from
Kidderminster was unable to attend. Firstly D6515 failed on its way up to collect them and then
replacement 47375 failed just south of Gloucester on its way to Swanage. 50049 was sent from
Kidderminster to recover the errant convoy back to Kidderminster. This probably was the reason
therefore that several locos ran with the headboard ‘The Shambles’
33111 Harmans Cross, 12 th May 2012
Despite this massive setback there was still a healthy line-up of locos with 50026 making its first ever
runs in preservation, 57312 making its first passenger runs in Network Rail livery and D5401 visiting
from the Great Central Railway. Transmart Trains 73136 was a late and much welcome addition to the
gala. Add these four to the line’s own two class 08s, D3591 (recently transferred from the Battlefield
Line) and 08436 plus 33111 and that’s a line-up many railways would be proud of. A nice touch was
the use of BR Standard 80104 so that the planned three train timetable could be maintained with the
reduced number of locos. This had been suitably re-numbered as D80104 especially for the occasion!
The line’s DMU contingent were all visible but took no part in the event which I found a little surprising.
50026 Harmans Cross, 12 th May 2012
Unfortunately D3591 failed at Norden on the Saturday and took no further part in proceedings but was
visible and photographable at Norden (above right) as was 08436 (above left).
73136 ‘Perseverance’ and 57312, Swanage 13 th May 2012 (Neil Dix)
50026 also had some minor problems which saw it miss a turn or two on the Saturday afternoon but it
was soon back working and very good it looked and sounded too. 57312, being air braked only, had
73136 coupled inside on all of its runs to operate the brakes but 73136 did venture out on a couple of
solo runs on the Sunday.
Having had such awful weather in the weeks leading up to the gala it was most welcome that glorious
sunshine appeared for the whole weekend and helped very much to make the event.
I attended the gala with my 12 year old son Jack on the Saturday, having camped overnight Friday
night right by the railway line. Unfortunately Jack was too young to have any cab rides (we were
hoping for at least the 50!) but we did get guided tours of all three signal boxes on the route, including
the one recently re-built at Corfe Castle. We had such a good time that we returned with the whole
family on the Sunday for more rides and to enjoy the sunshine.
D80104 Harmans Cross, 13 th May 2012
All in all, the team at Swanage pulled off an excellent gala, despite the setbacks, and it is a credit to
them that they produced such a wonderful event.
Standard Gauge Preservation Scene
Museum of Scottish Railways, Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway by Trevor Roots:
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) which operates the Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway has
recently opened (31 st March) a new 4 road display shed at the eastern end of the yard at Bo’ness,
adjacent the existing diesel shed. In conjunction there is a new step free walkway from the entrance
and car park past the rear of the shed, where the access is situated, then on round through the yard to
the SRPS Museum buildings. Though still quite a trek, the only previous official access to the museum
was via the footbridge over the line west of the station. It was and still is possible however to access
the museum from Boundary Street off the A904, past the eastern stock access and through some
woodland/public open space alongside the Firth of Forth...a long trek.
the new display shed as seen from the rear of the SRPS
museum stands between 37175 ‘W.S.Sellar’
(left) outside the diesel shed and
and completed walkway adjacent the
diesel shed ,11 th May 2012
The vast collection of rolling stock has become progressively much easier to see over the years with
the first museum building opening in 1995 and the extension in 2002 (left and right buildings
respectively in the photo below). The yard between the museum and the station was always difficult to
24

see but this new walkway, still under construction, now affords further views and photographs of most
of the stock. No more peering through the fence on the eastern boundary. Only locos inside the steam
shed, adjacent the station and the diesel shed are now out of view.
with the SRPS museum buildings to the rear this western looking view shows the rough path
now available through the yard with visiting WCR 37516
and resident 47643 on view,11 th May 2012
One big advantage of the new display shed is that the Cl.126 DMU and Cl.303 EMU can now be
stored under cover as complete sets.
display shed with 2 x 14T
fuel tanks, 3 x industrial locos
& a steam crane between the 3
car Cl.126 DMU (left) & Cl.303 EMU
(right), 11 th May 2012
Whilst the museum has an entrance fee, the new display shed is free. An adult season ticket for
unlimited access to the Museum of Scottish Railways is however only £4, valid between 2 nd April – 2 nd
October during opening hours, 11.00 to 16.00 (last admission 15.30).
Infrastructure News
Anything to do with structures on the railway or track maintenance will be covered in this section.
South London Line Changes by Mark Richards – Part 1:
There are several significant changes proposed to services in South London for the December 2012
timetable which will provide new journey opportunities. The current Southern operated South London
Line service linking London Bridge and London Victoria via Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill will be
withdrawn as East London Line services are extended from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction.
Existing Service
The present South London Line service operated by Southern calls at all stations between London
Bridge and London Victoria – South Bermondsey, Queens Road Peckham, Peckham Rye, Denmark
Hill, Clapham High Street, Wandsworth Road and Battersea Park. A basic half-hourly interval is
operated 7 days a week using Class 456 units. The service provides a useful link between the two
termini as well as interchange at both Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill to other Southern,
Southeastern and First Capital Connect cross-London services. Southeastern also provide services
over the Atlantic Lines principally the Victoria to Dartford service Mondays to Saturdays and
Blackfriars to Sevenoaks on Sundays.
Overview of the South London Line
Starting from London Bridge low level, the line diverges at South Bermondsey Junction from the
Norwood Junction route calling first at South Bermondsey. The station is built on a viaduct and is
located near to Millwall Football Club’s ‘New Den’ stadium.
The next station is Queens Road Peckham which opened in 1866 although the present station
platforms date from a more recent 1970s rebuild. Approaching Peckham Rye, the South London line
crosses the Catford Loop lines which run via Nunhead. From Peckham Rye the Up and Down South
London become the Up and Down Atlantic, running parallel with, albeit partly grade separated from,
the Catford Loop/Chatham lines as far as Factory Junction. Flat crossings between the
Atlantic/Catford routes are provided at Crofton Road Junction, Shepherds Lane Junction and Voltaire
Road Junction. The Catford Loop becomes the Chatham Up and Down Main at Brixton Junction
where the main route via Herne Hill diverges. At Voltaire Road Junction the four tracks are joined by a
fifth – the Chatham Reversible with a series of crossings here providing links between both the Atlantic
Lines and all three Chatham lines.
Two particularly fine examples of station architecture can be found on the South London Line at
Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill although the frontage of the former is largely obscured by modern
developments. Both were built for the London Brighton & South Coast Railway in the Franco-Italianate
style with Denmark Hill opening in 1865 and Peckham Rye the following year.
The Atlantic Road Viaduct (hence the name Atlantic Lines) carries South London Line services over
Brixton station. Shortly before this the line passes through the site of the former East Brixton station.
Brixton itself has a disused platform on the Up Chatham Main which is best viewed either from
Platform 2 or from a service to Herne Hill.
Further to the photo and brief description of the Railvac on page 22 in the last issue I have been
contacted by former member Morris Graham who provides the following extra info:
“I am given to understand that the vehicle was damaged by fire and was rebuilt. The original wagon
number was 35 74 390 0080 7R, which indicates that the machine was rebuilt onto an Rs type wagon
(bogie flat wagon). One notable thing about this machine is that it has two different types of buffers,
square at the hose end (clearly visible in the photo), round at the other.
Narrow Gauge Preservation Scene
Statfold Barn Railway by Ian Sant:
I don’t know about you, but I had never heard of this railway until a friend of mine (Brian Kiddy) invited
me to accompany him on a members day on Saturday 15 th October 2011.
Located just outside Tamworth, it is a private estate railway where fencing and barriers are kept to a
minimum. Member’s days are very relaxed and you are free to roam in and out of the various
buildings and the locomotive sheds unhindered. You are asked to take care and to be safety
conscious throughout but the open access gives you the opportunity to explore every nook and cranny
and take lots of photographs.
The railway consists of a 2’ 0” gauge oval track round the owner’s lake and a field railway which is
dual-gauged at 2’ 0” and 2’ 6”. The field railway starts at Statfold Station which has 2 platforms and
after leaving the station there is right turn where you cross standard gauge, over the junction with the
garden railway and head down to Oak Tree Halt, here, on the return, you can alight to have a look in
grain store which has a number of other items of railway interest and a few non-railway items as well.
The train proceeds round the field and it is easy to see why the railway is a working industrial railway
at harvest time as the seed crops are easily transferred to purpose-built hopper wagons. These
wagons when not in use are easily seen at the top end of the line.
The train now proceeds down to an oval loop and a seamless return to Statfold Station is achieved.
The train on this occasion was top and tailed by steam locomotives so that to be pulled by each you
make two journeys. Today we had as our locomotives, ‘Howard’ an Arnold Jung 0-4-0 and at the
other end was Peckett 0-6-0ST ‘Harrogate’ (see above with the later nearest).
3 ‘Sid’, 15 th October 2011
We did our two round trips, behind
each of the locomotives and then our
final trip was on board the rail
mounted Land Rover Series 2a
‘Nemeth’ which provided something a
little different! There are many
locomotives here from manufacturers
such as Peckett, Orenstein and
Koppel, Krauss, Bagnall, Fowler just
to name a few. There are steam and
diesel as well as others to view
including mining locomotives. I must
just mention one other item, known
as hissing ‘Sid’; a replica Lishman
and Young Compressed Air
Locomotive and was regarded as a
safe form of underground traction.
27

The railway has a close connection with the Andrew Barclay and the Hunslet Engine Company One
of the locomotives here is ‘Trangkil No. 4’ which was the very last steam locomotive built at the
Hunslet Jack Lane Works in Leeds and was brought back to UK from the Indonesian island of Java
and overhauled at Statfold where it was re-gauged from its original 750mm to 2’ 0”.
2 ‘Nemeth’, 15 th October 2011
As I said at the beginning, this is very relaxed day and you are free to roam at will so exploring areas
is great because you are not really sure what you will find next.
Thanks to Brian for inviting me and to the Statfold Barn Railway for a fabulous day out. Finally, I
would again remind you that this is a private railway so if you do want to visit you will have to come
along on one of their three open days a year, in the Spring, Summer and Autumn. As the first has
now passed (31 st March), the next two are 2 nd June and 15 th September.
Please visit their new website www.statfoldbarnrailway.com or else contact henry@Statfold-oils.co.uk.
FREIGHT NEWS
A successful piggyback trial by Europorte Europe for P400 lorry trailers was conducted between
Antwerp and Barking on 21 st / 22 nd May. It should herald the start of a regular service later in the year.
Leicester TMD has re-opened for servicing of GBRf locos by Electro Motive Services.
Light Rail, Metro & Tram News
Manchester Metrolink: The first of the 1991 built trams introduced at the start of the Metrolink, 1011
has been withdrawn as more 3000 series trams enter service. With 24 in service and 26 stored
awaiting the new system extensions, it is likely more of the earlier trams will go soon.
Railway Globetrotters
by Ray Smith
LADS WEEK 2011 ...well actually it was 10 days – Part 1:
How soon a year passes. With the memories of 2010 still fresh in our minds The Lads were off again.
This year’s theme, ‘Fishing for freight’ was Dave’s idea. I must thank him for the effort and planning he
puts in for these tours. The trip was intended to cover the southern half of Germany and the eastern
half of Switzerland, looking for freight locomotives, although other countries were also visited. It was
not all freight with some other interesting locations included. It was decided not to write for permits and
go with ‘an ask at the door policy’, which worked very well, with some good luck as well. Switzerland is
a country I have not previously covered in Railway Globetrotters.
Day 1 - April 8 th 2011:
We went through the tunnel and in Fréthun we saw 2 private Cl.186s and UK, DBS 66205. Then
followed a 60 mile journey to Lens where we asked and permission was granted. This is always a
good shed and even on a Friday there were 62 on shed. Our next stop was Somain. This depot is
fenced and gated but a lot of the locomotives can be seen walking along the other side of the main
line where 26 were noted, with only a few missed. Alnoye was next and the yard where the
locomotives used to stable was empty and the rails were rusty!
France has prefixed its locomotives with a
number denoting its sector. Here (5, allocated to
the regional passenger sector) 67414 and (4
belonging to the freight sector) 67597 stand side
by side on Lens depot, 8 th April 2011
27113, without a sector prefix is seen in a silver
livery instead of the standard green livery for the
class, Lens depot, 8 th April 2011
Already it was country number 2, Belgium. Monceau is the freight depot for Charleroi. There is a new
diesel stabling point in front of the original shed. This held 16 Cl. 77xxs. The old shed is still a dump
for withdrawn locomotives and 29 were noted, the majority being Cl. 73xxs with a couple of Cl. 51xxs,
62xxs and even 2 long withdrawn Cl. 84xxs. The depot could be a death trap as there were holes in
the floor, metal spikes sticking up and train spotter eating vegetation encapsulating many of the
locomotives! In Charleroi there is a PW depot and a new passenger depot. The PW had 2 Cl. 62xxs
and the main depot was high security with an unmanned gate. John went to the intercom and the gate
opened! We did the shed and never saw anyone. There was a mixture of EMUs and DMUs, a few
locomotives and 7 Cl. 91xx shunters. Also on shed was a new EMU, 08503. When we left and pulled
up to the gate, it opened. Big Brother is watching you. As we are all good boys we had nothing to
worry about. We stayed overnight in Namur.
traffic locomotives around the Paris area,
Day 2 - April 9 th 2011:
A look in Salzines (Namur) works only saw works pilot 9147 and 2632 outside. Ronet shed (Namur)
was next. Another depot that was a shadow of its former self with 24 being noted. This depot was
once a store for withdrawn locomotives and units and was full of them when I first visited in the early
1990s. The next shed was Stokem (Arlon). In its day this was a massive shed which I reckon could
have held 100+ inside. There were 35 seen on shed but this time we did not go into the locked shed
that held the withdrawn Cl.52xxs and 53xxs that I saw when I did it in 2009.
Belgian Cls. 52xx, 53xx and 54xx were all
Nohabs and were fitted with new cabs but all are
now stored or withdrawn. 5401 is in Stokem
depot possibly earmarked for preservation
Into Luxembourg, which became our country number 3. There are 2 main locations for locomotives
here, Bettembourg yard and Luxembourg shed. We viewed the yard first and there were 17 seen and
over half were the new Vossloh G1000s and G1206s. This yard is only 5 miles outside Luxembourg.
Next was the depot and as in the past a friendly greeting and the indemnity form to fill in then around
we went. This depot consists of 2 roundhouses with a new straight depot being built alongside. 51
locomotives and units were noted, some stored, some preserved (including 2 steam) and some active.
The unlucky 3001 was now outside. This locomotive was only days old when it had a head on collision
in 1998 and had been kept inside as a source of spares. Only 1 of the 4000 series was on shed. This
class is now the main workhorse. On the opposite side of the main line is a French unit depot where
both French and German units were noted.
Bettenburg yard led by 1505 and 1507
1106 a MAK 1000 stands on
Luxembourg depot, 9 th April 2011
After just less than 2 hours we were out of Luxembourg and back into France heading for Thionville.
This is one of those wonderful depots where you can see a lot when you approach to ask and if you
are refused you still do alright, however, in this instance we were allowed round and 50 were seen.
Next was the yard at Woippy. A look from the bridge with binoculars can see a few, but you need to
get amongst the locos to see them all. We were refused but we were given the list of all that was
stabled (46) and our sightings from the bridge confirmed that the list was correct.
Metz shed used to hold a large amount of locomotives. Like many, it is not so good now. Permission
was granted for the locomotive depot and we were told to come back to the office and the boss
contacted the unit depot, which we also got round. Well over 80 locomotives and units were spotted.
We also saw a dump on the other side of the main line. It was in a freight yard and we had to ask the
signalman to look round. It had 38 long withdrawn DMUs and 11 locomotives and tractors! Well worth
the visit.
Onward into country number 4, Germany where
the first depot was Saarbrucken. On my last visit
there, it did not have much on, so I was
surprised at the selection this time on shed.
Although only 37 locomotives, there were diesel
and electric DB locomotives, trams, private Cl.
186s and Vossloh DB Cl. 272s.
Eurocargo class 66 No. 77021 stands on Saarbrucken depot.
DB has taken over half of this class and originally numbered them Cl. 247 then the last 3 digits
and renumbered them again as Cl. 266 with the same last 3 digits.
This locomotive is not on the DB books. If it was it would have become 247021 then 26602
19 th April 2011
initially the last of the DB Cl. 185s, 185399 was given a large side number
.....to assist short sighted spotters.
The class was originally 185001 -399 but now includes 185401 - 406. 185400 was never built!
The last depot of the day was Kaiserslautern.
On my last 2 visits here we were refused, so I
was surprised that this time we were allowed
round. It used to be a large locomotive depot but
now only has an allocation of DMUs. We stayed
overnight in Mannheim.
Day 3 - April 10 th 2011:
It was a Sunday and the itinerary was planned to visit Mannheim and Stuttgart when the depots had
the most on. We got round Mannheim and it had 80 freight locomotives on. The next call was over the
river at Ludwigshafen which is a DMU and EMU depot. It also had a few diesel and electric
locomotives on.
there are many Cl. 185s working for private
companies as with185611 stabled on
Mannheim depot, 10 th April 2011
diminutive shunter 335142,
Ludwigshaven depot, 10 th April 2011
Then Karlsruhe! Not a large shed, yet on my previous visits we were refused. No change this time. Not
only refused but told that it was not permitted to take photographs in Germany! I did not try to advise
this silly man that he was wrong.
Karlsruhe is one of the most anti-spotter
friendly depots in Germany (see above) but
somehow my camera accidentally took this
photo of 212317, Cl. 212s are almost
extinct on DB, 10 th April 2011
Tubingen is a DMU depot and its
main allocation are the single car Cl. 650s
as with 650027, 10 th April 2011
Now Stuttgart, 2 depots, Kornwestheim (freight) and Rosenheim (passenger). At Kornwestheim there
was no-one to be seen. An unlocked, deserted depot. 75 on shed. Rosenheim also let us round and
34 passenger locomotives were seen.
Now down to Switzerland. Tubingen depot is home of many of the single car Cl. 650 DMUs where 17
were seen on shed. Singen, almost on the border, had 12 locomotives stabled in the yard and station.
This was our last German stop before Switzerland.
ICRS Publications
The 2012 UK Pocket Book has now been released and follows hard on the heels of the UK Combine and the 2012
versions of UK Wagons and UK Name Directory. The latter has been reworked to be even more comprehensive
than before and is the only such book currently on the market. It is also a small print run as are the current 2011
editions of UK Locomotives, Diesel Units, Electric Units and Irish Railways, so if you don’t want to miss out,
order yours now. The individual books have additional carriage number to unit number cross ref tables, not found in
the Combine and are very useful. As for future titles, an eagerly awaited updated Ultimate Sighting File is in
preparation for release during 2012 and will combine all locos into one book rather than the 3 previously published.
Books can be ordered online via PayPal at www.icrs.org.uk or by post from Carl Watson, ICRS Publications,
14, Partridge Gardens, Waterlooville, Hampshire PO8 9XG (please made cheque / PO payable to ICRS).
All books, except A6 Pocket Datafiles, are A5 wire bound printed on 90gm paper with laminated card covers allowing
them to be laid flat.
