Today, we have been thrown back further than ever, <strong>and</strong> are disillu -<br />

sioned. When hope fails <strong>to</strong> materialize, the backslide is all the stronger.<br />

Working with Bat Shalom <strong>and</strong> working with Palestinians, we unders<strong>to</strong>od<br />

what was happening. I remember, in the mid-’90s, Bat Shalom was one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the few places were Israeli <strong>and</strong> Palestinians could meet; I remember<br />

hundreds <strong>of</strong> phone calls from psychologists, artists <strong>and</strong> doc<strong>to</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> I<br />

remember that my instruc<strong>to</strong>r approached me asking, what are you<br />

doing? It was genuine, that the will <strong>of</strong> the Israeli people has something<br />

<strong>to</strong> do with Palestinian people.<br />
