Timoshenko Beam The Shear locking Phenomenon This occurs when significant bending is present. It is owed to the use of linear shape functions that cannot accurately model the curvature that is present in the actual material under bending condition. Instead, a shear stress is introduced which causes the element to reach equilibrium conditions for smaller displacements that the real ones. The element therefore appears stiffer.
