HEAVY ASSEMBLY 

Safely and reliably to the destination 

At Felbermayr, the problem-free transportation of heavy 

goods does not end at the unloading point. Specialist transport 

is not a full, customer-focused service until the perfect 

heavy lift handling has been carried out. Our committed employees 

ensure that the heaviest goods are brought safely on 

site. We can overcome the most difficult situations with our 

wealth of specialist knowledge and wide-ranging experience. 

The key condition for this, however, is to have the correspondingly 

high quality technical equipment. In addition to 

high-performance cranes, we can provide all kinds of hydraulic 

lifting equipment, such as lifting gear, turtles, moving 

tracks and air cushions, as well as strand jacks. And yet 

"movement" is not everything: having laid all the foundations, 

we can also build on them if required by our customers.

STRAND JACKS 

Hydraulics for the 

highest tonnages 

Cramped conditions combined with high tonnages are where 

strand jacks like going to work. With such a system, exceptionally 

high loads can be lowered or lifted via hydraulics over 

long distances down to the last millimetre. In detail, the system 

consists of a supporting structure for the jack, through 

which the steel braids are guided centred, and a hydraulic 

high pressure device for lifting the braids, and the load. In 

this context it is possible to lift 400 tonnes per strand jack. 

The number of strand jacks can be chosen in accordance with 

the load. The system is completed with a control unit, for the 

operation of which considerable experience and sensitivity is 

required. 

Starting with the transport, employees of Felbermayr heavy assembly 

installed both a generator and a turbine in a district heating 

power station operated by Linz Strom AG in the regional 

capital of Upper Austria. Laying the foundations for the components, 

which weighed in at 88 and 76 tonnes, was completed with 

a strand jack system.

LIFTING GEAR 

Moving heavy components horizontally and vertically 

According to requirements, lifting gear is generally used with 

two or four so-called stamps. In combination with a track system 

it is possible to not only lift but also horizontally move 

heavy loads weighing several hundred tonnes. 

To supplement this system, we also use bridge crossing systems. 

With such system it is possible to pass over bridges 

which would not normally withstand the transport load. 

In 2007 at the Felbermayr heavy load port in Linz, the huge task 

of moving a 477 tonne reactor onto an inland vessel was successfully 

completed. The requirement in this context was to load 

the steel colossus onto a flatbed truck using a lifting frame, in 

order to remove it from the production and assembly hall. This 

was, incidentally, the heaviest transhipment of a single component 

ever to be completed in Austria.

Since the lifting capacity of the cranes that were used was 

not sufficient for the required radius, employees from the 

installation department fitted three reinforced concrete 

bridge support elements on the intended foundations using 

air cushions – the elements weighing up to 220 tonnes 

'floated' to their intended location. 

AIR CUSHIONS 

Move loads more easily with compressed air 

With the system consisting of a control unit and individually 

combinable air cushions it is possible to transport goods with 

a weight of up to several hundred tonnes. In this context, for 

instance, it is possible for just ten kilograms of thrust to move 

a load of ten tonnes. To this end, the air cushions are positioned 

under the load, connected to the control unit, and the 

air pressure is then increased until the goods for transport 

'float' on the air film.
