10 • Lake Arrowhead Rotary Club, 2013 CHILDREN’S HEALTH INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS A Rotary District 5330 group Can you imagine? When your child suckles milk it bubbles out through its nose. IF your child lives and grows older it can’t speak properly, is shunned by all as a “devil’s spawn.” Never will your child have a normal life. That is what faces the parents of children with Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate. This malady is not as prevalent in the United States due to proper pre-natal nutrition, but it is rampant in third world nations. Children’s Health International Projects (CHIPs) supports children with this and other debilitating ailments around the world. CHIPs is a group of local District 5330 Rotarians, some of whom live here in our mountains. CHIPs helps provide, dental care, surgeries, and any medical needs that these children must have. CHIPs donates food for lunches at various clinics in Mexico and South & Central America. People who may have travelled days to bring their children to a clinic often sacrifice themselves to attend. CHIPs donates baby quilts to those babies coming out of surgery. CHIPs provides money for needed medical/dental equipment including things as a portable X-ray machine Once every calendar quarter a group of our Rotarians goes to Mexico to help with a Dental Clinic and Cleft surgeries. We also provide lunches for the families of those children for both days of the clinic. Here are some photos of some our members and successes.
DELIVERING HELP SOUTH OF THE BORDER Rotarians Jeanne and Joe Ramos ventured south to orphanages in Tijuana and Ensenada last summer to deliver food, toys and supplies to the children. The food was packed by students at RYLA, the Rotary youth leadership program held in April at Thousand Pines Camp. And 7th-graders who attended PRYDE, Rotary’s Personal Rotary Youth Development Experience, wrote letters and prepared educational material and special gifts for the orphans. Ramos, who will be the district governor of District 5330 for the 2013-14 term, also attended a planning meeting with his wife and others to talk about future projects between that district and District 5340, which includes clubs from Baja California. —Story and photo submitted by Joe Ramos Lake Arrowhead Rotary Club, 2013 • 11 Joe Ramos of the Lake Arrowhead Rotary Club talks with children at one of the orphanages in Mexico where he and his wife, Jeanne, delivered food, toys and supplies. ...Art & Wine Festival Continued from Page 1 As a non-profit service organization, all proceeds raised at the Art & Wine Festival are returned to local charity groups, scholarships for local youth, many community service projects as well as international service projects including providing clean water and vocational assistance throughout the world. General admission tickets are just $5; all ALA members with valid ALA beach club cards are admitted free of charge to the festival (wine glass and wine tastings are purchased separately). VIP Patio admission is just $50 which includes a special VIP wine glass, specialized wine tasting from premium vintners (who are on site to discuss their wines), appetizers specifically paired to select wines being poured, and entertainment. Interested artists, food vendors, and corporate sponsors are encouraged to submit your applications early, which are available on our website.
