All animals have been vaccinated against blackquarter <strong>and</strong> anthrax.<br />

The umbilical cords of newborn calves are tied with iodinedipped<br />

ligatures against joint-ill infection.<br />

Mange has been serious in wet weather. Treatment with BHC<br />

<strong>and</strong> alugan has been moderately successful, but delnav (organophosphorous)<br />

appears to be most effective. A rubbing-post draped with<br />

sackcloth soaked in old engine oil with delnav added provides a useful<br />

method of administration.<br />

Brucellosis appears to be prevalent in the Galana herd. Extensive<br />

tests were carried out recently by the Kenya Veterinary Department.<br />

The tests were not conclusive, <strong>and</strong> it would appear to be very difficult<br />

to isolate B'Bcelia organisms in camels in the absence of freshly<br />

aborted fetuses. Thirteen blood samples taken in April 1978 from 01<br />

Maisor females were negative.<br />

An attempt was made to infect two camels at Ngare Ndare with<br />

corridor disease caused by Theileria lawrencei. The serum was negative<br />

for antibodies <strong>and</strong> it was presumed camels are not susceptible<br />

to this disease. Johne's disease was isolated in serological tests on<br />

Galana but did not appear to cause a problem.<br />

Foot abscesses <strong>and</strong> abscesses at the base of the neck <strong>and</strong> on<br />

the rump cause considerable distress. Abscesses in the gl<strong>and</strong> can<br />

become large <strong>and</strong> require surgical removal. Pus from an abscess in
