Several males <strong>and</strong> some females were trained for riding <strong>and</strong> baggage<br />

transport. This was easy <strong>and</strong> was accomplished more quickly<br />

than would have been the case with horses. They show strong individual<br />

character <strong>and</strong> are very pleasant animals to work with.<br />

REPRODUCTION AND LACTATION<br />

Maturity has been reached at between 6 <strong>and</strong> 8 years. Data from<br />

11 females on the Ngare Ndare ranch are presented in table 11-1 <strong>and</strong><br />

show an average calving interval of 22 months (range 14-26 months).
