Typical p..toral nomad'i camp on a Iud dune during the wet<br />

among the Kel Ayr. Baggage is piled on the north <strong>and</strong> south sides<br />

allowing the east <strong>and</strong> west sides to be opened when lIWllight, <strong>and</strong><br />

sometimes wind, is not coming from these directions (at noon, tents<br />

are opened on both sides to give maximum shade <strong>and</strong> ventilation).<br />

The distance between tents varies according to the terrain. On<br />

small dune tope, the major family tents of nobles, for example, may<br />

be as close as 10 m to each other, with the hou.hold slave tents<br />

clustered within 2 m (figure 3-4), whereas on open plains they may<br />

be separated by 40 m, (figure 8-5) obliging the women to ride donkeys<br />

when visiting friends on the opposite side of the camp.<br />

Camps as a whole are vaguely crescen~ or U-shaped. At night<br />

when the animals return to the camp for milking, the camelB are
