Rossford High School<br />
student Ashley Skala was recently<br />
honored at a Wood<br />
County Educational Service<br />
Center program, held at the<br />
WCESC on Monday, February<br />
4. Ashley was recognized<br />
for completing<br />
WCESC’s Living Classroom<br />
program by Belinda Rhoads,<br />
direc<strong>to</strong>r of special needs;<br />
Diane Witt, special needs<br />
coordina<strong>to</strong>r; and Kelly<br />
Vanorder, WCESC instruc<strong>to</strong>r,<br />
as well as the WCESC<br />
superintendent and school<br />
board members.<br />
Ashley has been part of<br />
the Wood County ESC’s<br />
“Living Classroom,” a bestpractice,<br />
community-based<br />
instructional model developed<br />
<strong>to</strong> serve students with<br />
disabilities. Instructional<br />
programming occurs in a<br />
local apartment at the local<br />
university and community<br />
establishments. The goals of<br />
the program are <strong>to</strong> provide<br />
each student with the foundation<br />
of skills for independent<br />
living, employment,<br />
recreation/leisure, transportation,<br />
social relationships,<br />
and selfdetermination.<br />

Green State University and<br />
Wood County ESC, and<br />
through experiences in community<br />
establishments.<br />
Ashley will graduate this<br />
school year after finishing<br />
her education in the community-based<br />
Living Classroom<br />
during the past three years.<br />
Through a team effort with<br />
WCESC Instruc<strong>to</strong>r Kelly<br />
Vanorder, and her family,<br />
teacher and staff, as well as<br />
adult service agencies, Ashley<br />
is a more independent individual.<br />
She will now<br />
transition in<strong>to</strong> Wood County<br />

adult services continuing <strong>to</strong><br />
work and experience adult<br />
leisure activities.<br />

Dr. Larry Nelson, adjunct<br />
assistant professor of his<strong>to</strong>ry<br />
at Bowling Green State University,<br />
will present “The<br />
Life of a War of 1812 Soldier”<br />
on Thursday, February<br />
21, at 7:30 p.m., at the Fort<br />
Meigs visi<strong>to</strong>r center in <strong>Perrysburg</strong>.<br />
The presentation is<br />
free and open <strong>to</strong> the public.<br />
Doors open at 7 p.m.<br />
The lecture is part of the<br />
Fort’s Sixty Years War for the<br />
Great Lakes Series.<br />
War of 1812 soldiers, like<br />
soldiers from other wars,<br />
served their country through<br />
a myriad of conditions. Just<br />
as <strong>to</strong>day, soldiers endured the<br />
mono<strong>to</strong>ny of camp life punctuated<br />
by the horrors of battle<br />
and the hardships endured on<br />
the march. Join, Dr. Nelson<br />
as he explores what life was<br />
like for the men who served<br />
from 1812 <strong>to</strong> 1815.<br />

How do you measure the concept of 100 days of school? If you are in the All Saints<br />
Catholic School’s kindergarten class, you collect 100 items of your choice and display<br />
