Ashley Skala honored by educational service center
Rossford High School
student Ashley Skala was recently
honored at a Wood
County Educational Service
Center program, held at the
WCESC on Monday, February
4. Ashley was recognized
for completing
WCESC’s Living Classroom
program by Belinda Rhoads,
director of special needs;
Diane Witt, special needs
coordinator; and Kelly
Vanorder, WCESC instructor,
as well as the WCESC
superintendent and school
board members.
Ashley has been part of
the Wood County ESC’s
“Living Classroom,” a bestpractice,
community-based
instructional model developed
to serve students with
disabilities. Instructional
programming occurs in a
local apartment at the local
university and community
establishments. The goals of
the program are to provide
each student with the foundation
of skills for independent
living, employment,
recreation/leisure, transportation,
social relationships,
and selfdetermination.
According to Mrs. Witt,
since being a student in the
Living Classroom, Ashley

has experienced much success
and growth in vocational
skills, independent
living skills and social skills.
Ashley has learned how to
become more independent
through her experiences in
the program apartment,
through working at Bowling
Green State University and
Wood County ESC, and
through experiences in community
establishments.
Ashley will graduate this
school year after finishing
her education in the community-based
Living Classroom
during the past three years.
Through a team effort with
WCESC Instructor Kelly
Vanorder, and her family,
teacher and staff, as well as
adult service agencies, Ashley
is a more independent individual.
She will now
transition into Wood County
ROSSFORD RECORD JOURNAL — February 14, 2013 — Page 7
adult services continuing to
work and experience adult
leisure activities.
Attending the program
were Ashley’s family, including
her brother, Mark
Skala, a senior at Rossford
High School, who also was
honored at the program as
the WCESC February Student
of the Month. Ashley
and Mark will graduate together
on June 1.

History lecture series continues
at Fort Meigs Thurs., Feb. 21
Dr. Larry Nelson, adjunct
assistant professor of history
at Bowling Green State University,
will present “The
Life of a War of 1812 Soldier”
on Thursday, February
21, at 7:30 p.m., at the Fort
Meigs visitor center in Perrysburg.
The presentation is
free and open to the public.
Doors open at 7 p.m.
The lecture is part of the
Fort’s Sixty Years War for the
Great Lakes Series.
War of 1812 soldiers, like
soldiers from other wars,
served their country through
a myriad of conditions. Just
as today, soldiers endured the
monotony of camp life punctuated
by the horrors of battle
and the hardships endured on
the march. Join, Dr. Nelson
as he explores what life was
like for the men who served
from 1812 to 1815.

Along the Ohio Frontier,
1754–1799” and “Men of Patriotism

Dr. Nelson is the former
site manager of Fort Meigs
State Memorial, having retired
in 2004.

Spring ESSL Soccer
League–The league is open
to boys and girls ages 8 to
12.
Games are more competitive
than the instructional
program as children
begin to play by official
soccer rules and larger
sized fields/goals, and
some travel is involved to
other eastern suburban
cities such as Eastwood,
Northwood, Oregon, Oak
Harbor, and Woodmore, but
participation is still focal
point as children are guaranteed
to play at least half
the game.
Games will be played in
early April to mid-May.
The registration fee is

All Saints celebrates 100th day of school
How do you measure the concept of 100 days of school? If you are in the All Saints
Catholic School’s kindergarten class, you collect 100 items of your choice and display
them at school on the 100th day. From buckeyes, to miniature cars, to stones, All Saints
kindergartners found many creative ways to mark their 100th day of school. They shared
their collections with their fifth grade buddies.
