The work ahead for the
financial analysis subcommittee
is to identify funding
options and have a 10-year
forecast created of district
finances.
The subcommittee also
would like to gather information
from the community,
and “develop financing
options to fit the community’s
needs for facilities.”
Mrs. Gluckin invited
area residents to express
their opinions on how to
finance school facilities and
to attend the finance subcommittee
meetings.
“We can’t put together a
February meetings to be held to discuss
planning for new school facilities
Residents of Rossford School District
are still invited to be involved in planning
for new school facilities.
A series of public input meetings in
February continues to discuss the results of
the recent needs and condition assessments
of school facilities.
“Most important will be to share your
ideas about our schools and community,”
said John Appt, chairman of the master
plan steering committee.
“It is in the best interest of the students
and community to embrace the goal of
enhancing and updating their academic
programs and facilities,” he said.
“The keys to success are continuing to
provide information to the community and
having involved residents provide feedback.”
Copies of the presentation can be
assessments and survey results at the Web
New restrooms, rec building
postponed for Veterans Park
ÁContinued from page 1
“So we can’t do hot dogs
and hamburgers because
we’re not meeting current
health code regulations for
those,” he said.
Concessions are limited to
prepackaged goods, such as
chips, candy, pop, water.
Microwaves are used for coffee
and popcorn.
Better concessions would
serve baseball, softball, flag
football and soccer games, as
well as the marina, he said.
He proposed a new building
for the park featuring
ADA unisex restrooms; a
concession stand with an
attached kitchen; a room to
seat 50 people or to house a
summer day camp program
for children, arts and crafts
classes, or yoga or other exercise
classes without equipment;
and exterior storage for
ball field equipment.
The multi-purpose room
could be similar to the senior
center room at the Rossford
Community Recreation Center
that holds about 50 people.
“We can use it for rentals
for birthday parties, showers,
wedding receptions, Scout
events, marina events, senior
activities and fitness classes
that don’t require equipment,”
he said.
Also if one side of the
building is plain, it could
serve as a screen for outdoor
movies in the park.
“The park does get a
decent amount of utilization
throughout the year,” he
added.
Mr. Kovacevic also
described the current park
restrooms, which were built
before the Americans with
Disabilities Act.
“And they’re on top of the
hill and not convenient for
everything going on,” he
added.
Councilman Greg Marquette
questioned whether the
current restrooms in ADA
violation risk the city being
sued.
“those restrooms are open to
the public and are not compliant.”
Councilman Duricek
recalled that “the restrooms
up there were bad when I was
a kid.”
He suggested a temporary
option of a portable restroom
trailer that could be connected
to city water and sewer lines.
“It’s a way to move forward
that’s actually decent,”
he said.
Mr. Marquette noted that
long-term plans for the park
could include more than one
restroom, perhaps by the
marina and by the playground.
Council member Eckel
said she envisions new buildings
in the park with a boathouse
design “to fit with the
marina and waterfront park
façade.”
Mrs. Eckel reviewed the
FEMA floodplain maps and
determined that the flood line
reaches into the ballfield.
“A future building would
have to go by the tennis
courts,” she said.
She provided council with
some cost estimates, but
noted “a lot of variables factor
into the cost of the building.”
She estimated the cost
would be about $100 to $120
per square foot, but could
increase to $140 to $160 per
square foot.
For instance, the City of
Oregon built a 1,500-squarefoot
concession stand that
cost $155 per foot, plus
design work.
So the final costs could be
$176,000 for an economical
building to $240,000 for an
“upscale version,” Mrs. Eckel
said.
“Partnering with NWSD,
a lot of the those costs would
be shared,” she added.
She believes many people
in the community would benefit
from a new park facility.
“I think this project would
encompass lots of different
facets,” she said. “Rec would
good job filling up the rec
the extra space that has been
talked about. Summer day
camp kids would be down at
the park.
“It would benefit parkgoers
to have clean nice restrooms,
and marina boaters
have been asking for something
other than a porta-potty
for a long time. I think the
opportunities are endless.”
While serving on the marina
committee, Councilman
Mike Scott said he has been
interested in improving “the
desirability and look of that
area.”
The new guard shack and
finger docks have improved
the marina, he said, but “this
is a bit of an underutilized
jewel down here, and we
have an opportunity now.”
He noted that community
wide events such as the living
history Chautauqua events
would benefit from better
facilities.
“This could lend itself
really well to bringing people
into Rossford,” he said.
Councilman Robert Ruse
cautioned that a long-term
plan for the park should be
established before any buildings
are constructed.
“I wholeheartedly support
the parks, but I think we need
to go into this with a plan,” he
said.
Mr. Ruse also suggested
contracting the concessions to
a private vendor instead of
keeping it as a city responsibility.
Council President Oberdorf
believes the most immediate
need is to move the
pump station into the park,
and at a minimal cost.
“We certainly need some
type of building down there,”
he said. suggesting further
planning and ascertaining
costs.
“That’s going to take some
time, but I’m in favor of a
building down there,” he
said.
Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor:
2012 was the deadliest
year in our nation due to
mass shootings, since
1982 when records began
to be kept. Seven mass
shootings left 72 people
dead and 68 others
injured.
When Adam Lanza
allegedly decided to enter
Sandy Hook School and
gun down 20 first graders
and six school officials,
something happened in the
heart of America. To kill a
classroom of innocent 6-
year-old children left a
wound in our hearts that
refuses to heal.
As a result, I have felt a
burning conviction that we
as a community of faith
must wake up to the reality
of the increasingly violent
world and do something
to stem the violence.
Open Letter
Dear Rossford Board of
Zoning Appeals:
Recently the owner of
the Bulldog Diner appeared
before city council to
express his concern about
parking near his establishment,
particularly on high
volume nights at the casino.
His true complaint
should have been directed at
the BZA for approving a
driveway cut directly across
the street, thus permanently
eliminating three very
important spots, very critical
to the existence of the
businesses in that area.
Why have signs not been
installed and warnings
issued? And are stone driveways
permitted in the city?
