“One of the most stylish and spirited accounts of a Haydn quartet to come
along in a while … the Danish String Quartet has secured a position as a
significant ensemble. A new recording, which pairs Haydn’s Quartet in D and
Brahms’s Quartet in A minor, makes clear why this fast-rising ensemble has
been having such international success in recent seasons. All the benchmarks
WAGNER: Der Ring des Nibelungen (complete opera)
A deluxe edition of one of the most beloved complete Opera d’Oro recordings! This new package contains newly translated complete
English librettos for all four music dramas, along with a fifth book of essays.
“I will proceed to proclaim the 1953 Bayreuth Festival Ring conducted by Clemens Krauss the best on records … Hotter in his
prime as Wotan, Wolfgang Windgassen in his first Bayreuth Siegfried … and Astrid Varnay as a womanly, impassioned Brunnhilde.
The rest of the cast, with minor exceptions, matches the competition point for point and easily surpasses all other Rings … The
sound, remarkably solid and natural for a live recording of that era, favors the voices in a way that doesn’t slight the orchestra. But
what lifts this Ring to preeminence is the conducting of Clemens Krauss … Tempos move forward purposefully, on the whole,
but without slighting the music’s mystery and tragedy. And the intensely dramatic and ecstatic moments, those great outbursts to
which Wagner rises with satisfying frequency, are delivered with blinding passion. Hear this Ring, and find out what this music, and
Richard Wagner, are all about.” — John Rockwell, New York Times
A Violin’s Life traces the provenance and history of the “Lipinski” Strad, one of
the most notable of the coveted string maker’s instruments, which are worth
millions today. Crafted in 1715, the violin is named for Polish virtuoso Karol
Lipinski, who played this instrument from c. 1818 until his death in 1861.
Frank Almond, concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, has
played on the “Lipinski” Strad since 2008. Envisioning a project that chronicled
the extraordinary history of this violin and its associations, he has made a
recording that includes Tartini’s most famous work, the “Devil’s Trill” Sonata,
as well as a virtuoso solo piece by Karol Lipinski, one of Julius Röntgen’s
unjustly neglected violin sonatas, and the stupendous Sonata in D minor of
Robert Schumann, certainly performed during their lifetimes with Schumann
at the piano and Lipinski playing this very instrument. William Wolfram is
Frank’s estimable accompanist.
After La Valse à mille temps, Jan Michiels and Inge Spinette return with
a new two-piano program for Fuga Libera. This recording pays tribute
to Bach, Bartók, and Kurtág, and also to two legendary piano duos:
Dittá and Béla Bartók, and Márta and György Kurtág. The recording
highlights the strength of the union of two minds, which — like Dittá
and Béla Bartók, Márta and György Kurtág, and Inge Spinette and Jan
Michiels — can phrase music with a rare degree of intensity and acuity.
J.S. BACH: The Art of Fugue
The Art of Fugue is a cycle of fugues and canons that can be rightfully
considered the peak of J.S. Bach’s polyphonic mastery. Amazing thanks
to its unsurpassed polyphonic technique, the work left a mass of
mysteries and questions as to the author’s concept, its completeness,
and the instruments on which it could be played. This album features
the cycle as it was performed by Tatiana Nikolayeva, a recognized
master of interpretation of Bach’s music. In 1950, then a young pianist,
she became a winner of the International J.S. Bach Competition in
Leipzig; Dmitri Shostakovich had composed a cycle of 24 preludes and
fugues especially for her. Her performance of The Art of Fugue ranks
among the best-known piano interpretations of this work.
The music of Mieczysław Weinberg is one of the most beautiful pages
of unwritten music history of the 20 th century. Now, Melodiya presents
the best examples of Weinberg’s chamber music. His piano quintet,
composed during WWII, and eighth quartet (1959), a one-movement
piece filled with inner contrasts, unintentionally call up associations
with Shostakovich’s brightest chamber opuses composed during the
same years. Weinberg’s compositions are performed by the original
lineup of the Borodin Quartet, an outstanding chamber ensemble.
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: The Tsar’s Bride (an opera in four acts)
In 1849, translator, poet, and playwright Lev Mey (1822–1862) wrote
a drama called The Tsar’s Bride, based on one of the passages from the
era of Ivan the Terrible’s reign. In 1868, Mily Balakirev drew Nikolai
Rimsky-Korsakov’s attention to Mey’s work. However, the composer
did not set to creating an opera based on the plot of The Tsar’s Bride
until some 30 years later. Almost without changing Mey’s plot,
Rimsky-Korsakov enhanced the dramatic qualities of The Tsar’s Bride
with his musical means. The opera was premiered in Autumn 1899 at a
KHACHATURIAN: Symphony No. 1 in E minor • Concerto-Rhapsody
for cello
Aram Khachaturian’s music is a sort of chronicle of his time and his
motherland; it is an enthusiastic tale of the life of his country, built
right before the artist’s eyes. Symphony No. 1 (1934), dedicated to the
15 th anniversary of Soviet Armenia, was the composer’s diploma thesis.
The Concerto-Rhapsody for cello was written in a burst of inspiration
in a free developing form similar to Chausson’s Poème and Ravel’s
Gitana for violin. The composer found quite a rigid structure that
connected the principle of rhapsodic development of music based on a
free flight of fantasy with important elements of sonata style that add a
clear logic of symphonic thinking to the whole.
Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale The Ice Maiden was taken as a basis
Music from Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti, Bellini, Mozart, and Massenet
The career of Luciano Pavarotti spanned 45 years, one of the longest careers
of any operatic singer. His debut took place in Italy in Puccini’s La bohème in
April 1961, and this remained one of his signature roles throughout his life.
Later that same year, he made his first appearance in Verdi’s La traviata. The
next year, in Palermo, he first sang the Duke in another Verdi masterpiece,
Rigoletto. The single performance, however, that propelled Pavarotti into world
fame was at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1972, when he sang the
role of Tonio in Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment (La fille du régiment).
The nine brilliant high Cs that he effortlessly emitted in the single aria “Ah,
In modern times, “superstar” status for an opera singer is unusual. Not so in
the 19 th century, when opera singers were commonly accorded the adulation
reserved for rock stars today. Luciano Pavarotti’s numerous appearances on
with major pop singers, the huge arena performances of “the three tenors”
(along with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras), and performances at other
distinctive style that, once heard, is never forgotten. It originated officially at
a music festival in Naples, Italy, in 1835 but reached its international heyday
in the early 20 th century when the great tenor Enrico Caruso, himself a native
of Naples, sang Neapolitan songs as encores to many of his opera recitals.
Since then almost every famous tenor has continued the Caruso tradition,
and in modern times almost everyone has left an album of Neapolitan songs
along with their operatic recordings. Naturally, Pavarotti did also, and these
short songs with their direct emotional impact, usually full of sweet nostalgia
and a touch of melancholy, graced virtually every vocal recital he ever gave.
Luciano Pavarotti: tenor
Music from Puccini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Tosti, and Massenet
A survey of hundreds of popular and classical song titles throughout the
centuries shows that love is by far the leading theme of vocal music. Yet only
one track on this album is technically a love song: Tosti’s “L’ultima canzone.”
The rest are arias, the operatic equivalent of the love song. Luciano Pavarotti
made his professional debut in Puccini’s La bohème, and this remained
probably his most famous signature role for the rest of his long career. Rodolfo
sings tenderly to Mimì “O soave fanciulla” (“O gentle girl, o sweet face bathed
in soft moonlight, in you I see the dream I have dreamed forever”). Can
you get more romantic? Some of opera’s great lovers are here, including the
Duke from Verdi’s Rigoletto, who starts out as a callous seducer and ends up a
gibbering jellyfish, madly in love with the lady he kidnapped for sport.
Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Chopin, but above all because of his pensive search for expression.
Chamber music instead of Carnegie Hall! It must have been a great creative urge
indeed that compelled Felix Mendelssohn to compose his second piano trio while
HALLGRÍMSSON: Notes from a Diary, Op. 33 • BRITTEN: Lachrymae
On his work Notes from a Diary, Hafliði Hallgrímsson says: “During a visit
to Amsterdam some years ago, I found myself standing by a dark window
covered in grey dense material in a house, No. 263 in Prinsengracht, where
Ann Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for two years during the
Second World War. Standing by the window in this environment and what
it represented was strangely muted. Suddenly a large bell was struck in the
Westertoren Church nearby and the deep resonance emanating from that
bell shook me profoundly for a split second. So this was the sound that Ann
found reassuring; I was for a few moments painfully aware of the terrible fate.
When I started to work on a composition for viola and piano, the experience
in the Ann Frank Museum became more and more the magnet that shaped
the musical character of the work.”
Via Crucis is one of Reinbert de Leeuw’s favorite pieces. In an interview in 2002, he said that the
“A in the Fourth Station was the most beautiful note” in the history of music. In that same year,
he performed for the first time the solo piano version that he would go on to feature more often
in recitals. On this CD he combines that piece with La notte, in a performance with his usual
violinist partner Vera Beths.
