TRAINING WORKSHOP ON METHODS AND
GUIDELINES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MUTATION
DATABASES IN CANCER

Data on gene mutations related to epidemiological and clinical endpoints are generated at an
increasing pace but adequate database projects that compile and organize these data <strong>for</strong> their useful
exploitation are still limited.
The aim of this training workshop is to review the current status of mutation databases in cancer and to
provide participants with tools to use and develop mutation databases <strong>for</strong> their own research. The goal
is to stimulate the development and coordination of databases on somatic genetic alterations in human
cancers.The workshop is a joint event between IARC, HGVS and COSMIC and funded by the EU
(FP6).
Target participants
The course is aimed at students and researchers whose activities are relevant to the topic. They
require appropriate background and experience.
Equipment and material
Participants will be provided with manuals and textbooks, personal computers and software as
required during the course.

Lectures:
• examples of spectral mutation databases such as IARC TP53 (http://www-p53.iarc.fr/),
COSMIC (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/genetics/CGP/cosmic/), or CAG (http://dirapps.niehs.nih.gov/gac/index.htm);
• solutions and softwares <strong>for</strong> mutation databases;

• recommendations <strong>for</strong> mutation nomenclature (HGVS) and cancer database annotations
(epidemiological and clinical aspects);
Practical session:
• exploration of existing databases;
• discussions with experts on projects <strong>for</strong> database development.
Participation requirements
• There is no registration fee. The course is limited to 30 participants who will be selected on
the basis of their research interests relevant to the topic of the workshop.
• All participants must be fluent in English, the working language of this workshop.

The course will take place at IARC.
Participants are responsible <strong>for</strong> obtaining a visa <strong>for</strong> France. IARC will provide them with an invitation
letter if required.
Language
The working language of the course will be English, and participants will be expected to have sufficient
knowledge of spoken and written English to participate actively in discussions

The participants will be expected to find their own financial support <strong>for</strong> travel and accommodation.
