S.T.E.M. takes root at Brownell -Holmes

Flint Community Schools eagerly anticipates
the launch of the district’s S.T.E.M. academy at
the Brownell-Holmes elementary campus this
fall. S.T.E.M. – which stands for Science, Technology,
Engineering, & Mathematics –
will accelerate the teaching of technical
education for elementary students.
Brownell will house grades kindergarten
through second while Holmes will have
third through sixth
grade. One wing will
be dedicated to prekindergarten
students.
Holmes, a former
middle school, is
currently undergoing
renovation in
preparation for its
grand re-opening in
September when a
new crop of budding
young scholars will once again fill its corridors.
An open house for the Brownell-Holmes
S.T.E.M. Academy will be held in late August.

and Valeria Shepard have been appointed the
building leaders at the two-building campus
on Oxley Drive. Whitehead is the principal

Safe schools, safe kids
Eighteen Community Service Troopers from the Michigan
State Police visited a dozen Flint elementary schools on May
8-9 to teach the “T.E.A.M.” concept. T.E.A.M. is an acronym
for Teaching, Educating And Mentoring.
The two-day session began with a news conference at
Bryant Elementary with T.E.A.M. Director, Col. Kriste
Kibbey Etue, and Interim Superintendent Larry Watkins, Jr.
They were flanked by MSP Troopers from around the state.
The program was created to teach the students important
safety lessons while at the
same time building trust and
respect between troopers and
the city's youngest residents,
said Etue.
The Troopers visited
Brownell, Bryant, Carpenter
Road, Cummings, Dort,
Doyle-Ryder, Durant-Tuuri-
Mott, Eisenhower, Neithercut,
Potter, Scott and Washington.
Flint Community Schools unveiled four new
safety vehicles that will allow security officers
to be more visible at district buildings as well
as in the community. With the addition of the
four vehicles, the district now has six cars in
which to patrol campuses.
“This will allow us to increase patrols during
the school day at our buildings and along
school bus routes,” said Interim Superintendent
Larry Watkins, Jr.
“We will also be able to conduct patrols
during the evening, on weekends and holidays.”

Four seniors named 2013 Gates Millennium Scholar s
Flint Community Schools’ outstanding
string of Gates Millennium Scholars remains
unbroken, as four seniors have been awarded
the prestigious and richly deserved scholarship
for 2013.
The district's newest Gates Scholars are:
Jalen Eason, Northern High School; and Asia
Johnson, David Johnson and Jade Stith, all of
Southwestern Classical Academy. Asia and
David are the district’s first siblings to win
the scholarship in the same year.
“Congratulations to Asia, David, Jalen and
Jade, and their families, for this tremendous
achievement,” said Interim Superintendent
Larry Watkins, Jr. “The entire Flint Community
Schools’ family, from our classroom
teachers, administrators and support staff to our school board,
feels a tremendous sense of excitement and pride for the accomplishments
of these young men and women.”
Jalen Eason, a 3.884 GPA intends to study mechanical engineering
at the University of Central Florida. School: Northern
High School.
Middle school students who have struggled
to succeed in a conventional academic
setting will now find solace at the Northern
Success Academy, beginning in the
2013-2014 school year.
Housed in the former Northern High
School, the Success Academy will deliver a
challenging curriculum where students in
grades 7 th through 9 th are also taught coping
skills to better manage social pressures to
compete in the academia arena. The school
is for students who have a history of behavioral
referrals, chronic absenteeism or
both. It will enroll about 240 students who
will be assigned there for the full year.
“The middle school years, 7th, 8th and
9th grades, are challenging times for adolescents
and parents,” said Dr. Gail Ganakas,
Executive Director of Community
Education and Relations. “Children have

unique needs and are experiencing
growth spurts, and often behave
in a manner that is in conflict
with the expectations of
teachers and parents.
“Independence and peer acceptance become
the driving force for this age group.
Recognizing their special gifts and talents,
the Success Academy, led by Principal
Janice Davis, will focus on relationships
between teachers, staff and students.”
The curriculum four core courses, two
electives plus math and reading intervention
services, all of which are taught by
highly qualified staff. The academic program
is augmented by block scheduling and
smaller class sizes with a 15-to-1 studentteacher
ratio.
The onsite “wraparound” services will
provide personalized counseling as well as

James Madison College at Michigan State University
to study comparative cultures and politics.
School: Southwestern Classical Academy.
David Johnson, 3.658 GPA, will study pre
-med at Michigan State University. School:
Southwestern Classical Academy.
Jade Stith, a 3.982 GPA, will study nursing
anesthesia at Wayne State University. School:
Southwestern Classical Academy.
Since 2000, 19 students from Flint Community
Schools have been named Gates Millennium
Scholars.
The Gates Millennium Scholarships are
good-through-graduation scholarships that can
be used to pursue degrees in any undergraduate
major at the accredited college or university of the recipients’
choice.
The program is also known for its recipients' high graduation
rates – a six-year rate of more than 86 percent (38 percent higher
than the national graduation rates for all students) and comparable
to the rates for students from high-income families.
Nor ther n Success Academy opens in September
academic and behavior support services.
Programs will include conflict resolution,
anger management and career planning.
An Individual Student Plan (ISP) will be
developed to set academic, behavior and
attendance goals for each pupil. The ISP
will be created in collaboration between
the counselor, parents and student. Students
will earn program exit once all the
goals have been achieved.
Staff will include an attendance liaison
and social workers in addition to teaching
professionals.
There will be orientations on July 16 and
July 18 for students who have been assigned
to the Northern Success Academy.

Cong ratulations to the Class of 2013!
Flint Community Schools on June 4 hosted the All-City Commencement at Perani
Arena, with 348 graduates from Northern, Northwestern and Southwestern Classical
Academy awarded high school diplomas.
“It has been our privilege to educate these young people and to witness as they have
grown into fine young men and young women,” said Interim Superintendent Larry
Watkins, Jr.
“As they all prepare to move into adulthood, I wish the entire Class of 2013 great
success in their future endeavors. I would also like to commend the fine teaching staff
of Flint Community Schools for another job well done.”

Flintstone Challe nge nets $12,500 for Flint Classroom Suppor t Fund
The Flint Classroom Support Fund on June 5 was presented
with a check for $12,500, which is the net amount raised from the
first annual Flintstone Challenge 5K Walk/Run. The event was
held May 5 in the College Cultural neighborhood, with the race
beginning and ending at the former Whittier Middle School.
The check was presented in person by organizers Luda Khait
and Amanda Winston. A third member, Rachel Paneth-Pollack,
joined the presentation via Skpe.
In accepting the check, Fund President J.D. Winegarden said:
"On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Flint Classroom
Support Fund, I want to publicly praise and thank Dr. Luda Khait,
Dr. Amanda Winston and Dr. Rachel Paneth-Pollack, and the
Michigan State University School of Human Medicine, plus all of
the sponsors, for such a magnificently successful 5K Flintstone
Challenge Race.
"The Flint Classroom Support Fund will be using the money as
they have for 30 years — for teacher and school grants directly
into the classrooms to enhance and stimulate the education of
Flint children. These trained physicians have started a great running
race that is on board for next year to support the Flint Classroom
Support Fund's grant programs for the children educated in
Flint Community Schools."

wanted to leave a tangible
legacy for the Flint
community.

comes to solving problems, creating
companies, being bosses or managing a
team, they will have all the confidence
they need.”
Shepard added: “Brownell's K-2 site
will be the foundation for our 3-6
S.T.E.M. site. Our students will
actively engage in project-based learning
using science, technology, engineering
and math with a laser focus on English
Language Arts.”
The initial phase will be to familiarize
students with their new environment
and academic expectations, beginning
this fall. In addition, the curriculum will be
adjusted to incorporate more S.T.E.M. in
a more integrated manner.
Students will have designated times and
days for focused attention to labs, units,
assemblies and field experiences. During
the year, they will have opportunities to
work on additional shorter projects,
specifically focusing on the components of
S.T.E.M.
Additional curriculum will be implemented
into the academic schedule over
time. The implementation plan also calls
for expanding the S.T.E.M. concept to
more schools in the district. Community
partnerships and programs are an important
aspect of the S.T.E.M. program to
provide opportunities to connect classroom
instruction with real-world experiences
and careers.
Students will be better able to see the
connections between the content areas of
science and mathematics while appropriately
using technology and engineering
practices. Students will also be expected
to demonstrate growth in English Language
Arts, Social Studies and Fine Arts.
Once fully implemented, the expectation
is that students will be acting as engineers

and scientists
by defining or
finding a problem
then actively seeking the resolution to
the problem.
Professional development will be provided
for teachers to help train students to
think like scientists and engineers.
A strong bond between the home and
classroom is also important variable in the
success formula.
“My vision for parents is to have a vision
that their children will become better citizens
and have a greater thirst for knowledge,”
said Whitehead. “We need to have
S.T.E.M. — ELEMENTARY GRADES
parent involvement to help foster the
appreciation of learning and ownership.”
The Brownell-Holmes S.T.E.M. campus
will offer students exciting and rigorous
challenges to better prepare students for
careers in a technological society.
“My vision is to grow the S.T.E.M.
program to be one of the highest quality
programs anywhere and to prepare our
students for greater things ahead,” said
Shepard.
Provides the introductory and foundational S.T.E.M. courses
that lead to success in challenging and applied courses in
secondary grades
Introduces awareness of S.T.E.M. fields and occupations
Provides standards-based, structured inquiry-based and realworld
problem-based learning that interconnects S.T.E.M. subjects,
including ELA, Social Studies and Fine Arts
Stimulates student interest in “wanting to” rather than “having
to” take further S.T.E.M. related courses
Bridges and connects in-school and out-of-school learning
