CONSULTING
I have advised international organizations, governments, consulting firms and companies on
issues related to antitrust, competition policy and law enforcement, and regulatory reform, and I
have provided expert report and testimony.
NUTS AND BOLTS
In trying to figure out how things work, I have visited Audi, BMW, Nissan and Toyota factories.
The BMW site has some nice graphics to click on. For the mechanically minded, it is fascinating
to watch the ambidextrous robots. Kuka Robotics is a world leader. Among my research interests
in this industry are to examine the extent of innovation, evolution of the sophisticated supplychains,
and the use of robotics and ICT to enhance productivity, lower product defects, increase
safety, improve design, and study firms’ business strategies in responding to competitive and
environmental challenges. For my research, so far I have collected data on over a dozen
automobile firms from 1969-2003, and currently extending it to 2008. Part of my research was
presented at the International Automobile Association Congress (Frankfurt, 2009). (Click here
for the Frankfurt Auto Show, 2009.)
My other industry of focus is the Pulp and Paper industry. I have visited paper mills in Finland,
U.S., Germany and Sweden. For example, Munksjö AB, the world leader in ElectroTechnical
Paper. My research interests are in the role played by environmental regulations in shaping
technological change, productivity, incremental innovations, ICT use, and modernization
investments across firms in this industry. Also, in the heterogeneity in firms’ business strategies
in responding to common economic shocks. This is part of my ongoing research that originated
from grants from the Center for Paper Business and Industry Studies (CPBIS, A Sloan
Foundation Industry Studies Center).
