Membrane Preparation<br />

The <strong>Helmholtz</strong>-<strong>Zentrum</strong> <strong>Geesthacht</strong><br />

made machine (center of picture)<br />

allows casting of microporous support<br />

membranes onto fleece material on<br />

rolls up to 70 cm width. These<br />

support membranes are produced by<br />

a precipitation process from polymer<br />

solutions into water. They are highly<br />

porous and show an evenly smooth<br />

surface.<br />

membranes with functional thin film<br />

separation layers. These layers from<br />

silicone or PTFE can be produced in<br />

the range of 0.5 to 10 µm thickness.<br />

The department of Polymer Technology constructs and builds membrane modules with new developed


The department of Polymer Technology constructs and builds membrane modules with new developed<br />

membrane materials for technical applications. This combination of chemistry (developing new membranes)<br />

and process engineering (building modules and realizing projects) is the key of success of our research center.<br />

Flat sheet membrane modules are designed in the envelope type<br />

that enables membranes exchange easily. These modules are<br />

applicable in nanofiltration, vapour permeation and gas<br />

permeation processes. Slightly modified modules are suited for<br />

high operation pressure up 120 bars.<br />

Minimodul K100<br />

The modules for nanofiltration are constructed in the envelope<br />

type also, that allow changing of membranes easily. This type<br />

can be used for separation/recovery of organic solvents. These<br />

modules allow high operation pressure and the liquid feed is<br />

directed by flow pattern.<br />
