has important mineral deposits, notably<br />

asbestos (40 per cent <strong>of</strong> the world supply<br />

being produced in the Thetford Mines).<br />

According to the Research Service <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Eastern Townships, in 1970 there were 523<br />

physicians in the entire region, or 91.8 per<br />

100,000 population. The number <strong>of</strong> nurses,<br />

2,312, was more than four times the number<br />

<strong>of</strong> physicians. In addition, 791 attendants<br />

and auxiliary nurses were known to practice<br />

in the region.<br />

The Investigation was carried out by the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Epidemiology <strong>of</strong> the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sherbrooke Medical School, ,<br />

new school that conducts its courses in<br />

French. The principal collaborator was the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor and chairman <strong>of</strong> that Depart n<br />

CHILE Project<br />

The project in Chile was carried out in<br />

the metropolitan area <strong>of</strong> Santiago (Greater<br />

Santiago) and in four comunas:* Colina,<br />

Lampa, Quilicura, and Til-Til, to the north<br />

and west <strong>of</strong> the city (Figure 9). The population<br />

<strong>of</strong> Greater Santiagot increased from<br />

1,933,453 in the census <strong>of</strong> 29 November 1960<br />

to an estimated 2,638,110 on I July 1969<br />

(midpoint <strong>of</strong> the project). The estimated<br />

population <strong>of</strong> the four comunas was 61,990.<br />

Santiago, the capital <strong>of</strong> Chile, is situated<br />

in the north-central region <strong>of</strong> the Province<br />

<strong>of</strong> Slntiago, at an altitude <strong>of</strong> 500 meters.<br />

In recent years the city has grown rapidly<br />

toward the northeast. The seasons are well­<br />
