the two age groups, neonatal and 28 days­<br />

4 years. In the neonatal period more than<br />

80 per cent <strong>of</strong> the deaths occurred in hospitals<br />

in the 15 projects combined. Place<br />

<strong>of</strong> death usually was the same as place <strong>of</strong><br />

birth for those dying in the first day <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

In the Sherbrooke and California projects<br />

more than 90 per cent <strong>of</strong> all neonatal deaths<br />

occurred among infants who remained in<br />

hospital from birth until death, and more<br />

than 70 per cent died within the first 48<br />

hours after admission.<br />

Since <strong>mortality</strong> in the Latin American<br />

projects was not concentrated in the first<br />

day or first few days <strong>of</strong> life, the duration <strong>of</strong><br />

hospitalization differed markedly from that<br />

the Northern American areas, and there<br />

were distinct differences also among projcts.<br />

For example, in San Juan Province, in<br />

both the suburban departments and the city<br />

<strong>of</strong> San Juan more than 90 per cent <strong>of</strong> neonatal<br />

deaths occurred in hospitals but only
