period which is considered most crucial,<br />

The percentages receiving care in the first<br />

trimester varied from 86.7 in Sherbrooke<br />

and 66.0 in suburban California to 2.6 in<br />

Viacha, Bolivia. In six areas <strong>of</strong> the Latin<br />

American projects at least 40 per cent <strong>of</strong><br />

mothers had prenatal care within that<br />

period, but in six others the proportion was<br />

less than 20 per cent. In fact, more than<br />

half the mothers in the rural departments<br />

<strong>of</strong> Chaco Province, in La Paz and Viacha,<br />

and in San Salvador and rural mu1nicipios<br />
