242 Pattern of Mortality in Childhood
ter of data on the reproductive history of
mothers reveals that the excessive losses
through fetal deaths and deaths of those
born alive must have handicapped the fainilies
by repeated episodes of illness and mor-
tality. To ensure survival of children from
the hazards of the infant period, planning
for pregnancies which are desired by the
parents and which will result in healthy infants
is the first essential.
MATERNAL AGE
During the interviews conducted in the
homes of deceased infants, the public health
nurse or social worker obtained the dates of
birth of parents and also the dates of
termination and the result of each pregnancy
and, if death occurred, the child's
age at death. Usually the interviewers were
successful in obtaining complete reproductive
histories. However, even if a complete
sequence of vital events was not obtained,
usually birth order and age of mother at
time of birth were available. These histories
provided the bases for the analyses in this
section.
The patterns of reproduction appear to
vary widely in the 15 projects. Age of
mothers at birth of deceased infants is
analyzed first (Table 146). The percentage
distributions by maternal age are shown in
Figure 118 in descending order of the birth
