of deaths were small in three of these pro­
jects, in one-Monterrey-there were 91
deaths. In this project the death rate in­
creased from 94.3 per 100,000 live births for
first births to a rate of 258.4, or more than
two and one half times greater, for births of
in El Salvador; here the death rate was high
for mothers aged 30-34 years, and there was
a slight decline in the oldest age group. Tile
differences in patterns in the four projects
with relatively low rates may be due to the
small numbers.
