<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>: Profile at a glance<br />

Founded: 1821. Granted university status by Royal Charter in 1966.<br />

Campus Locations: Edinburgh, Galashiels, Orkney, Dubai.<br />

The <strong>University</strong>’s main Edinburgh campus comprises 380 acres of parkland and incorporates the Edinburgh<br />

Research Park established in 1971 as the first science park of its kind in the UK. In excess of 40 companies are currently<br />

based on the Research Park. In 2009, work was completed to co-locate with Scottish Borders College at the Netherdale Campus in<br />

Galashiels.<br />

The <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> Dubai Campus was established in 2005 and accepted its first cohort of students in the autumn of that<br />

year. At the start of <strong>2010</strong>/11 the student population had reached almost 1,800.<br />

The <strong>University</strong>’s International Centre for Island Technology based in Stromness, Orkney Islands, is part of<br />

the <strong>University</strong>’s Institute of Petroleum Engineering. The Centre concentrates on renewable energy, particularly<br />

marine energy.<br />

Student population:<br />

On-campus (Edinburgh, Galashiels, Dubai, Orkney - headcount):-<br />

• 6,594 undergraduate (including exchange and visiting students)<br />

• 2,167 postgraduate taught course<br />

• 522 postgraduate research<br />

On-campus (Scottish Borders Campus - headcount):-<br />

• 519 undergraduate (including exchange and visiting students)<br />

• 29 postgraduate taught course<br />

• 16 postgraduate research<br />

About one third of the <strong>University</strong>’s ‘on campus’ students studying in Scotland are from outside of the UK making <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> one<br />

of the most internationally diversified of any UK universities.<br />

Transnational programmes (independent study in around 150 countries worldwide or through a network of 46 Approved<br />

Learning Partners ALPs). In HESA reporting year ending 31 July <strong>2010</strong> there were:<br />

• 10,437 active ALP students<br />

• 2,752 active independent (distance learning) students<br />

Staff population (Scottish Campus):<br />
