<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong><br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> has strong historic<br />

links with <strong>Malaysia</strong>. Our first <strong>Malaysia</strong>n<br />

student graduated from our Edinburgh<br />

Campus in 1967 and there are over 3,500<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> alumni in the country.<br />

It gives me great pleasure to outline our plans<br />

and vision for this exciting new development,<br />

which will bring <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong>’s distinctive brand<br />

of teaching and research to <strong>Malaysia</strong> and create<br />

opportunity and growth within the city of<br />

Putrajaya. I would like to share with you a little<br />

background on who we are and our long<br />

standing relationship with South East Asia.<br />

From our base in the UK, we have strong historic<br />

links with <strong>Malaysia</strong>. Our first <strong>Malaysia</strong>n student<br />

graduated from our Edinburgh Campus in 1967<br />

and, for many years, we have had a number<br />

of Academic Partners delivering our degrees<br />

in <strong>Malaysia</strong>. Today we have over 3,500 alumni<br />

in the country.<br />

Establishing <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong> in<br />

Putrajaya is the beginning of an inspiring journey<br />

for us. Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, (PjH) the<br />

master planners responsible for the development<br />

of the beautiful administrative capital of<br />

<strong>Malaysia</strong>, is working closely with us to establish a<br />

flagship campus in Putrajaya. In 2014, this<br />

purpose-built campus will offer an exceptional<br />

learning environment for teaching and research<br />

in a wide range of disciplines.<br />

Until 2014, <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong><br />

will be based in Putrajaya Holdings’ prestigious<br />

headquarters in Menara PjH. It is from this<br />

location that we are now introducing a range<br />

of postgraduate programmes, with many more<br />

to follow, specifically tailored to contribute to<br />

the continuing economic success of <strong>Malaysia</strong><br />

and the South East Asia region.<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> is a vibrant, forward-looking<br />

university, highly regarded for the quality<br />

of its degrees and research and their<br />

professional relevance.<br />

Our vision for <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong> is<br />

to create another centre of excellence, alongside<br />

our campuses in the UK and Dubai. Our focus<br />

Class Education<br />

I am delighted to introduce you to <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong> in Putrajaya. It is an honour<br />

and a privilege for me to introduce the<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> brand of education to potential<br />

students, researchers and partners in South<br />

East Asia. I hope this, our first prospectus for<br />

students studying in <strong>Malaysia</strong>, provides you with<br />

a flavour of what we can offer in terms of choice<br />

of study, research, student experience and the<br />

opportunity to be part of a network of over<br />

88,000 alumni worldwide.<br />

Until our new campus opens in 2014, we will<br />

be located within Menara PjH in the centre of<br />

Putrajaya. These prestigious facilities overlooking<br />

the lakeside provide an inspiring environment<br />

for academic study. Following the launch of<br />

the MBA programme, we will be introducing<br />

a range of postgraduate programmes in 2013<br />

and 2014, including the MSc in Energy,<br />

MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering,<br />

MSc in Construction Project Management,<br />

MSc in Quantity Surveying, MSc in Business<br />

Psychology, MSc in International Business<br />

Management and the MSc in Petroleum<br />

Engineering. More programmes will follow,<br />

including the <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> Foundation Programme,<br />

leading up to a major expansion in 2014/15<br />

when we move into the purpose built campus<br />

in Precinct 5, Putrajaya.<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong> will offer the<br />

same high quality education provided in the UK<br />

and at our campus in Dubai. We will create an<br />

exceptional place for learning, enhanced by<br />

opportunities for students to transfer between<br />

campuses. Students here in Putrajaya will be able<br />

to benefit from an international experience for<br />

part of their studies, should they so wish, joining<br />

students in Edinburgh or Dubai for part of their<br />

degree programme. This reflects our goal to<br />

share knowledge across the globe and provide<br />

opportunities for students and researchers to<br />

build international relationships, and to learn<br />

and work with a broad range of people from<br />

a wide variety of backgrounds.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> has been commended by the<br />

UK Quality Assurance Agency for the quality<br />

of its educational programmes and the strength<br />

of its partnership with students and we will<br />

establish this at our <strong>Malaysia</strong> Campus; providing<br />

an excellent on-campus student experience with<br />

a range of facilities and student accommodation<br />

nearby. We welcome students from <strong>Malaysia</strong> and<br />

beyond and will offer a range of scholarships<br />

designed to encourage excellence and extend<br />

opportunities to all students who have the ability<br />

Heritage<br />

With a heritage stretching back over 190 years,<br />

we understand the value of teaching and research<br />

that is relevant to the needs of industry and we<br />

have a successful track record of producing<br />

One of <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong>’s founding<br />

fathers, James <strong>Watt</strong>, the great<br />

18th century engineer and<br />

inventor of the steam engine.<br />

His statue is housed in The<br />

National Museum of Scotland<br />

in Edinburgh.<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s name commemorates<br />

two men ahead of their time: George <strong>Heriot</strong>,<br />

the 16th century educational philanthropist and<br />

financier to King James, and James <strong>Watt</strong>, the<br />

great 18th century engineer and inventor of<br />

the steam engine. These were two successful,<br />

leading edge professionals of their time, whose<br />

skills and attitudes are embedded in the ethos<br />

of the <strong>University</strong> today.<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong> provides a modern,<br />

dynamic learning environment as a branch campus<br />

of <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>, which is headquartered<br />

in the city of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom and<br />

is an institution with a long, established heritage.<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong>’s history dates back to 1821,<br />

making it the 10th oldest university in<br />

the UK. Its heritage is rooted in the provision of<br />

education for working people and professionals,<br />

and the School of Arts, as it was originally<br />

known, aimed to “address societal needs by<br />

Han Chun is a <strong>Malaysia</strong>n graduate from<br />

Shah Alam, just outside Kuala Lumpur, who<br />

studied Actuarial Science at <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong>’s<br />

Edinburgh Campus. He graduated in 2011<br />

and is now a trainee consultant with Ernst<br />

and Young LLP in London.<br />

“<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> offered me a very flexible, industry appropriate education and I felt my<br />

degree programme really prepared me to enter the workforce. I found my lecturers to be very<br />

experienced in their fields and the lectures were linked to current industry practice, so the<br />

knowledge I gained was useful and relevant to the world of work. I am currently employed<br />

as a trainee consultant with Ernst & Young LLP based in London, having joined their Life Actuarial<br />

ranging from marine and environmental sciences<br />

to food science and psychology.<br />

The School of Life Sciences has a unique<br />

portfolio of interdisciplinary teaching and<br />

research in specialist areas, ranging from<br />

marine and environmental sciences through<br />

food science to psychology. Life Sciences offers<br />

a range of teaching and research programmes<br />

also offers a route to a <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> Management<br />

degree distinguished by the inclusion of substantial<br />

work placement opportunities as an integral<br />

part of the programme. Scottish Borders Campus<br />

was part of a recent £34 million investment<br />

to build new residences and improve student<br />

facilities and accommodation in Galashiels, part<br />

of the <strong>University</strong>’s commitment to continually<br />

improving the student experience. The new<br />

residences, able to accommodate over 200<br />

students, opened in September 2012.<br />

Orkney Campus<br />

Based in Stromness, our Orkney Campus is<br />

home to the International Centre for Island<br />

Technology (ICIT), which is part of <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong>’s<br />

prestigious Institute of Petroleum Engineering.<br />

Established in 1989, ICIT is a specialist arm of the<br />

Institute of Petroleum Engineering with a remit<br />

to develop research, teaching and professional<br />

practice relating to the sustainable economic<br />

development of the islands and peripheral<br />

maritime regions of Scotland.<br />

It carries out advanced research, postgraduate<br />

training and consultancy in marine resource<br />

management and related issues.<br />

Dubai Campus<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> was the first British<br />

university to set up in Dubai International<br />

Academic City in 2005, offering top quality<br />

British education to students and executives<br />

from around the United Arab Emirates (UAE)<br />

and further afield. The <strong>University</strong> was invited<br />

to Dubai in recognition of its global reputation<br />

and international reach in the fields of<br />

engineering and management and is now<br />

providing undergraduate and postgraduate<br />

programmes tailored to meet the demands of<br />

the United Arab Emirates employment market.<br />

In 2012 a new purpose-built campus opened<br />

representing an investment of £35 million,<br />

accommodating over 3,000 students.<br />

<strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong>’s strong historic links with <strong>Malaysia</strong><br />

stretch back to 1967 when our first <strong>Malaysia</strong>n<br />

student graduated from the Edinburgh Campus.<br />

Today, we have a number of Academic Partners<br />

in the region and over 3,500 alumni in the<br />

country, who on completion of their degrees<br />

became automatic members of The <strong>Watt</strong> Club,<br />

a network connecting over 88,000 <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong><br />

graduates worldwide.<br />

Founded in 1854, The <strong>Watt</strong> Club is the oldest<br />

alumni network in the UK and this global network<br />

is very important to us. Lifetime membership is<br />

automatic upon graduation and is free of charge.<br />

<strong>Malaysia</strong> has the biggest group of <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong><br />

graduates outside of the UK and we greatly look<br />

forward to the growth of this group as our new<br />

campus in Putrajaya becomes established.<br />

Graduates<br />

Alison Goligher’s impressive career began<br />

after she gained a postgraduate Master<br />

of Engineering degree in Petroleum<br />

Engineering from <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Following graduation she joined Schlumberger Oilfield Services, working for the company for over<br />

17 years, and rising to become their Vice President and General Manager for Cased Hole Services<br />

at Schlumberger’s Wireline headquarters in Paris.<br />

Alison then moved to Shell E&P Europe. Initially she looked after the Corporate Support portfolio<br />

based in Rijswijk. She moved on to the position of VP Technical for the Middle East, based in Dubai,<br />

and then became VP Production Directorate, taking responsibility for Shell’s operated assets in South<br />

East Asia.<br />

Her tremendous commitment to the industry was recognised through an Officer of the Order of the<br />

British Empire (OBE), in the 2005 New Year’s Honours List, for her services to the oil and gas industry.<br />

Alison and <strong>Heriot</strong>-<strong>Watt</strong> <strong>University</strong> have maintained strong links: the <strong>University</strong> awarded her an<br />

Honorary Degree – in recognition of her commitment to the education of young professionals in<br />

the oil and gas industry, particularly young female engineers – and she is currently a board member<br />

of the <strong>University</strong>’s Institute of Petroleum Engineering.
