Welcome to
Heriot-Watt
University Malaysia
Heriot-Watt University has strong historic
links with Malaysia. Our first Malaysian
student graduated from our Edinburgh
Campus in 1967 and there are over 3,500
Heriot-Watt alumni in the country.
It gives me great pleasure to outline our plans
and vision for this exciting new development,
which will bring Heriot-Watt’s distinctive brand
of teaching and research to Malaysia and create
opportunity and growth within the city of
Putrajaya. I would like to share with you a little
background on who we are and our long
standing relationship with South East Asia.
From our base in the UK, we have strong historic
links with Malaysia. Our first Malaysian student
graduated from our Edinburgh Campus in 1967
and, for many years, we have had a number
of Academic Partners delivering our degrees
in Malaysia. Today we have over 3,500 alumni
in the country.
Establishing Heriot-Watt University Malaysia in
Putrajaya is the beginning of an inspiring journey
for us. Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, (PjH) the
master planners responsible for the development
of the beautiful administrative capital of
Malaysia, is working closely with us to establish a
flagship campus in Putrajaya. In 2014, this
purpose-built campus will offer an exceptional
learning environment for teaching and research
in a wide range of disciplines.
Until 2014, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia
will be based in Putrajaya Holdings’ prestigious
headquarters in Menara PjH. It is from this
location that we are now introducing a range
of postgraduate programmes, with many more
to follow, specifically tailored to contribute to
the continuing economic success of Malaysia
and the South East Asia region.
Heriot-Watt is a vibrant, forward-looking
university, highly regarded for the quality
of its degrees and research and their
professional relevance.
Our vision for Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is
to create another centre of excellence, alongside
our campuses in the UK and Dubai. Our focus

Access to World
Class Education
I am delighted to introduce you to Heriot-Watt
University Malaysia in Putrajaya. It is an honour
and a privilege for me to introduce the
Heriot-Watt brand of education to potential
students, researchers and partners in South
East Asia. I hope this, our first prospectus for
students studying in Malaysia, provides you with
a flavour of what we can offer in terms of choice
of study, research, student experience and the
opportunity to be part of a network of over
88,000 alumni worldwide.
Until our new campus opens in 2014, we will
be located within Menara PjH in the centre of
Putrajaya. These prestigious facilities overlooking
the lakeside provide an inspiring environment
for academic study. Following the launch of
the MBA programme, we will be introducing
a range of postgraduate programmes in 2013
and 2014, including the MSc in Energy,
MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering,
MSc in Construction Project Management,
MSc in Quantity Surveying, MSc in Business
Psychology, MSc in International Business
Management and the MSc in Petroleum
Engineering. More programmes will follow,
including the Heriot-Watt Foundation Programme,
leading up to a major expansion in 2014/15
when we move into the purpose built campus
in Precinct 5, Putrajaya.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia will offer the
same high quality education provided in the UK
and at our campus in Dubai. We will create an
exceptional place for learning, enhanced by
opportunities for students to transfer between
campuses. Students here in Putrajaya will be able
to benefit from an international experience for
part of their studies, should they so wish, joining
students in Edinburgh or Dubai for part of their
degree programme. This reflects our goal to
share knowledge across the globe and provide
opportunities for students and researchers to
build international relationships, and to learn
and work with a broad range of people from
a wide variety of backgrounds.
The University has been commended by the
UK Quality Assurance Agency for the quality
of its educational programmes and the strength
of its partnership with students and we will
establish this at our Malaysia Campus; providing
an excellent on-campus student experience with
a range of facilities and student accommodation
nearby. We welcome students from Malaysia and
beyond and will offer a range of scholarships
designed to encourage excellence and extend
opportunities to all students who have the ability
and ambition to benefit from a Heriot-Watt
University degree.
As well as direct entry for qualified students,
there will also be the opportunity to join
the Heriot-Watt University Foundation
Programme to prepare for undergraduate
degree programmes.
Our new campus at Putrajaya will also be a
platform for research activity and knowledge
transfer. Heriot-Watt is a research-led university
– ranked in the top 4% in the world – with a
reputation for leading edge, practical research.
Our focus at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia will
be on creating solutions for business and industry,
collaborative working, and activity that supports

Heriot-Watt University’s name commemorates
two men ahead of their time: George Heriot,
the 16th century educational philanthropist and
financier to King James, and James Watt, the
great 18th century engineer and inventor of
the steam engine. These were two successful,
leading edge professionals of their time, whose
skills and attitudes are embedded in the ethos
of the University today.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia provides a modern,
dynamic learning environment as a branch campus
of Heriot-Watt University, which is headquartered
in the city of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom and
is an institution with a long, established heritage.
Heriot-Watt’s history dates back to 1821,
making it the 10th oldest university in
the UK. Its heritage is rooted in the provision of
education for working people and professionals,
and the School of Arts, as it was originally
known, aimed to “address societal needs by
incorporating fundamental scientific thinking and
research into engineering solutions”.
Responding to the needs of business and
industry continues to define Heriot-Watt

studied Actuarial Science at Heriot-Watt’s
Edinburgh Campus. He graduated in 2011
and is now a trainee consultant with Ernst
and Young LLP in London.

Built Environment
Internationally recognised as a leader in its
field, the School has close links to industry
and employers, ensuring students receive
the most up to date and relevant teaching.
The School of the Built Environment is one of
the UK’s leading institutions for multi-disciplinary
research and teaching. Over the past two decades
it has created a leading international reputation
in its field. It is one of only seven built environment
schools in the UK, with a high percentage of
research being recognised as international and
world leading in the UK’s Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE 2008) review.
The School has a diverse and well established
portfolio of taught postgraduate programmes with
students from around the world studying full time
and part time and by flexible distance-learning
through an online virtual learning platform.
There are close links with industry and employers
to ensure that students receive the most up to
date and relevant teaching. All of the School’s

Life Sciences
A unique portfolio of teaching and research
ranging from marine and environmental sciences
to food science and psychology.
The School of Life Sciences has a unique
portfolio of interdisciplinary teaching and
research in specialist areas, ranging from
marine and environmental sciences through
food science to psychology. Life Sciences offers
a range of teaching and research programmes
themed around the biological and molecular
sciences, nanosafety, food science and nutrition,
human physiology, psychology, marine and
environmental biology.
The School has a strong commitment to
innovative and industrially relevant research
which, in turn, underpins the delivery of highly
relevant degree programmes. The specialist
Centre for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology,
on the Orkney Campus in north-west Scotland
in the UK, provides an opportunity for staff
to partner with external research agencies
to promote Scotland internationally in marine
and environmental sciences. In recent years
new areas have also been developed in the high
profile area of nanotechnology, where the School
is involved in vital research into the safety and
toxicology of new generations of nanomaterials.
A wide range of challenging job opportunities
exist in all areas of the Food and Drink industry
from the production of raw materials through
manufacturing, distribution and marketing. The
International Centre for Brewing and Distilling
on the Edinburgh Campus supports students in
the broad range of subject specific skills relevant
to the brewing and distilling industries, while
its vocationally oriented food science degree
programmes support students in developing an
understanding of topical issues in food science.
Psychology bridges the gaps found between
theory and real-world application. Its research
activities are often collaborative in nature with
links to the public and private sectors including
the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), the
Scottish Executive, law enforcement agencies
in the UK and the music industry. Substantial
cross-discipline collaboration, external industry
input and a Heriot-Watt University wide focus
on commercialisation of research developments,
make the School’s research and teaching
portfolio focused, creative and highly topical.

The School of Management and Languages
is a major international force in the business
management and languages arena. With close

The Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IPE)
is recognised internationally as a leading Centre
of Excellence in Petroleum Engineering and
Petroleum Geosciences teaching, training and

The continued and growing demand for the
exploitation of subsurface oil and gas resources
means that Heriot-Watt remains committed to
the development and delivery of training and
research programmes relevant to the needs of

and training are provided through taught

Scottish Borders Campus
Located in the Scottish Borders town of
Galashiels, the Scottish Borders Campus is
home to the world famous School of Textiles
and Design.

Heriot-Watt’s strong historic links with Malaysia
stretch back to 1967 when our first Malaysian
student graduated from the Edinburgh Campus.
Today, we have a number of Academic Partners
in the region and over 3,500 alumni in the
country, who on completion of their degrees
became automatic members of The Watt Club,
a network connecting over 88,000 Heriot-Watt
graduates worldwide.
Founded in 1854, The Watt Club is the oldest
alumni network in the UK and this global network
is very important to us. Lifetime membership is
automatic upon graduation and is free of charge.

Alison Goligher’s impressive career began
after she gained a postgraduate Master
of Engineering degree in Petroleum
Engineering from Heriot-Watt University.
Following graduation she joined Schlumberger Oilfield Services, working for the company for over
17 years, and rising to become their Vice President and General Manager for Cased Hole Services
at Schlumberger’s Wireline headquarters in Paris.
Alison then moved to Shell E&P Europe. Initially she looked after the Corporate Support portfolio
based in Rijswijk. She moved on to the position of VP Technical for the Middle East, based in Dubai,
and then became VP Production Directorate, taking responsibility for Shell’s operated assets in South
East Asia.

Her tremendous commitment to the industry was recognised through an Officer of the Order of the
British Empire (OBE), in the 2005 New Year’s Honours List, for her services to the oil and gas industry.
Alison and Heriot-Watt University have maintained strong links: the University awarded her an
Honorary Degree – in recognition of her commitment to the education of young professionals in
the oil and gas industry, particularly young female engineers – and she is currently a board member
of the University’s Institute of Petroleum Engineering.
