aspirations that are the very essence of our consciousness as Englishmen. The home is a
'work of Hiring', an expression of the deepest instincts of our forbears through the ages.'
That may sound a bit highfalutin nowadays, but the fact is that the ECH remains an
intrinsic part of English life, and one which I believe few would like to see disappear or
become institutionalised, and separated from the families that built and nurtured them
through generations.
Those of us who live in and are responsible for such houses have to face many challenges,
but we are also extremely lucky to be stewards of such important elements of our
country's heritage.

From the time when the houses and estates were first created, each successive generation
that lives in them can only try to ensure that the houses, parks and estates in their care
will be left in ever better condition for future generations to enjoy.
