DenfordPark. Kintburv, Berkshire The South Room The small South Room is now occupied by WCs; it was original accessed off the corridor by a door further to the east than the present one. That has been converted into a cupboard and the present doorway is very plain and evidently inserted. The room has a standard pattern window with splayed reveals that lacks a radiator or radiator cover and is similar to that in the adjacent South-East Room. Whilst the room has a timber skirting board it lacks a cornice. The North-West and South-West Rooms The present North-West and South-West rooms were evidently once part of one large single room until the corridor was continued westwards and separated them. The line of the fluted cornice around the original stubby 'L-shaped' room is quite clear. The room was presumably heated by an angle stack in the north-eastern corner which has been removed. This would have been a very large room, lit by two windows in the west wall as well as single windows in the north and south walls. The western windows have been blocked but their positions are obvious; in between, a doorway was inserted to link the corridor with the modern extension to the west. The other two windows are still in use and have the same general detailing as the others on this level. 3.3 Building B2: The East Wing The West and East Wings (Buildings Bl and B2) are known to have been added to the sides of the original Main House (Building A) as part of the re-ordering of Denford Park at the end of the 1930's. Whilst the West Wing was built on open ground against the west wall of the original house, the East Wing seems to have replaced an earlier link block connecting the Main House and the Service Wing. This may account for the slight difference in length between the two wings but not the more substantial difference in width. 3.3.1 The Exterior Because of the adjacent buildings to either side, only the north and south walls of the wing are external. These are faced with virtually identical Bath stone ashlar to the Main House, although the inner leaf is of brick. The external detailing was deliberately designed to match the existing work - including the later parapet that had been added to the original design shortly after it was built (see below). Both elevations have hopper heads with the initials THH and the date 1939. -48- Richard K Morriss & Associates, Historic Buildings Consultants, Bromiaw House, Bromlow, Shropshire, SYS OEA
