Th e e p i s t e m i c f o c u s of the international c o n f e r e n c e i s t h e n e x u s b e t w e e n h i s t o r i c a l experience and philological understanding in the work of the eminent literary scholar Peter Szondi (1929 Budapest - 1971 Berlin). The discipline of Comparative Literature in Germany developed owing to Szondi’s studies, his policy of guest invitations and his e n g a g e m e n t i n u n i v e r s i t y politics during his time as a chair of Comparative Literature at Freie Universität Berlin. In 1968, Szondi spent the spring semester as Visiting professor at the Hebrew University Jerusalem at the invitation of Gershom Scholem, who wanted him to accept a chair for Comparative Literature there, an offer that Szondi declined two years later. 45 years after Szondi’s semester at the Hebrew University, this conference will present key aspects of Szondi’s thinking and discuss the historical implications of his critical hermeneutics.
