Homecoming 2011..................11
October, 2011
From the office of
Mrs. Lisa Olson
District Administrator
Dear Parents,
This message comes to you right after our homecoming week in which we
had outstanding school spirit for our dress-up days, our pep rally, and our
football game. As parents, you already know but it’s worth stating—We have
great students at HUHS! If you were unable to catch any of the homecoming
events, please check out the photos on our HUHS Facebook page.
Last month, I shared our focus areas for the 2011-12 school year: collegeand
career-ready students, teacher effectiveness, and learning options.
Each month I would like to highlight how we are addressing each of these
focus areas.
Improved ACT Scores
We are continuing to improve our ACT scores as the HUHS Class of 2011
had an average composite ACT score of 23.1, above the state average
of 22.2. We encourage all students to take the ACT as it keeps all postsecondary
education options open and provides the district more complete
achievement data. We offer several tools to help students prepare for
the ACT such as a multi-session prep course and practice ACT tests.
Our district subscribes to WisCareers, an interactive career exploration
and planning website which includes career assessments, information
about occupations, education, budgeting, and planning for life after high
school. Students are encouraged to use this tool at school and at home
when considering career possibilities.
Teacher Effectiveness
As a practice to improve teacher effectiveness, many of our
teachers will be observing other teachers throughout the school
year to provide an opportunity for peer feedback and to share
best practices in the classroom. This practice is new this year and
is being implemented so that teachers may gain new ideas and
perspectives about teaching from colleagues.
Advanced Learning Options
In an effort to match student’s ability and aptitude to courses,
we have expanded our advanced learning options for incoming
freshmen this school year. Through placement testing, 15
freshmen were placed into English 10 as a better match for their
ability and to provide the opportunity for additional upper-level
English courses. These students attended a one-week summer
session to provide necessary procedural and background skills
from English 9 to help ensure success in English 10.
Working together, we can continue our mission of preparing
all students to conquer the challenges of tomorrow through
dynamic education by offering a safe and orderly environment,
filled with high quality instruction for all of our students.
PSAT/NMSQT for Juniors:
College-bound juniors should consider taking the PSAT/NMSQT, which is the best preparation for the SAT
and entry into the National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs. It is an optional exam that measures
critical reading, mathematical reasoning and writing skills that are important for success in college. Students
do not have to recall facts from literature, history, science or math formulas, as this test measures reasoning
and critical thinking skills.
All students who take the PSAT/NMSQT will receive an official score report. They will receive scores in
critical reading, mathematics and writing skills and will see how their scores compare to those of other
students across the country. Students will be able to see which answers they got right or wrong. They will
also receive information about how they performed on specific academic skills.
Students who take the test will receive free access to My College QuickStart, an online college and planning
tool that contains an online PSAT/NMSQT Score Report; a customized SAT Study Plan; a personality test; and
personalized lists of colleges, majors and careers. For more information, visit www.collegeboard.org
Registration for the PSAT is due Friday, October 7 at 3:00 p.m. in the Counseling Office. The cost for the PSAT
is $20 and checks should be made payable to HUHS. The exam will be given on Wednesday, October 12,
from 7:25 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. At the time of registration, students will be given a student guide that includes
test-taking help and a practice test. There are only 125 seats for the test, so time is of the essence to register!
World Cultures Students Prepare for 1:1
As part of the Social Studies Department’s goal to
include technology into the classroom, all freshmen
World Cultures students are utilizing tools in the
Library Media Center.
Students in Mr. Coffin, Mr. Meinberg, Mr. Kelley, and
Mr Helms’ World Cultures classes have been exploring Russia’s geography, history and culture. They have
recently started working with Ms. Cowell in the LMC to locate articles on current events in Russia using the
LMC’s databases, more specifically two tools called “Global Issues In Context” and “Noodle Tools.”
Global Issues In Context is a new database that presents information in a modern way, compared to traditional
databases, by giving students more navigational options so that they can identify information using the
method that best fits their own learning style and particular needs. Because the information is presented “incontext”
of a larger topic or region, they are less overwhelmed by disconnected information. The database
also facilitates their ability to connect the study of global regions to their own interests and concerns.
After researching an article based on current events in Russia, the students have been asked to create note cards
and answer questions about the current events electronically. Using Noodle Tools, an online bibliographic
and note-taking tool, students will gather, cite and respond to current events. This tool will allow them to
revisit their work, and encourages re-thinking as it re-organizes information in an infinite variety of ways.
This, in turn, helps students develop their skills in critical and
flexible thinking.
The World Cultures teachers, Ms. Cowell from the LMC, and
Ms. Christian from the Special Education Department, have
collaborated on making this activity a great early utilization
of the District’s 1:1 Computing Initiative by changing how
students learn and how they demonstrate their knowledge.
Hartford Common Council Approves
Funds for West Side Lights Project
Recently, the Hartford Common Council voted and
approved $100,000 for the lights at West Side Park. The
bidding process for this project should be finalized
before the end of the year, so they can start installing the
poles in January and February. The light system should be in place just in time for the high school baseball
season! Before this can be done, the West Side Lights fundraising group still needs to raise their share of the
costs - $10,000. In the event that they exceed their fundraising goal, the excess money will go toward a new
bleacher system and other baseball field improvements at West Side Park
There are two ways you can still help us reach our goal:
• BUSINESS AND FAMILY BANNERS: Businesses and families can purchase a 5x8 banner to be displayed on
the outfield fence at West Side baseball diamond for all spectators to see. Three levels of commitment are: One
Year - $350, Three Year - $1000, Five Year - $1500, plus a one-time cost of the banner. Banners will be displayed
each year at the beginning of the HUHS Baseball season (April) and remain up until the end of the Hartford
Hawks season (October). All banners will be returned to the business at the end of their contract agreement.
• WEST SIDE LIGHTS DONATION - BOOSTER SPONSORSHIPS: All donors will be recognized at West Side
Park on a “Recognition Plaque” located near the concession stand for the life of the park. Booster Sponsorships
are at five levels: POLE SPONSOR ($5000), HOMERUN ($2500), TRIPLE ($1000), DOUBLE ($500), SINGLE
($250). *All levels of donations are welcome. There is no minimum donation amount. Everything helps!!!*
Donations are tax deductible and can be dropped off at Westbury Bank in Hartford or sent to WEST SIDE
LIGHTS PROJECT - 1035 Juniper Lane Hartford WI 53027. Please consider donating to this cause. If you have
any questions, please contact me at scott.helms@huhs.org or 414-704-4356. We would like also to thank the
City of Hartford council members for supporting our goal of installing the lights at West Side Park. Without
their support, this project would not be possible.
at 5:30 p.m. featuring the Freshman and JV match and continue with the Varsity match at 7:00 pm. If you can not
attend the DIG PINK EVENT you can easily donate online. Our goal is to raise $1,000 and with your support we truly
believe that we can achieve this goal. So please encourage teachers, students, and the community to help support
