November, 2011
From the office of
Mrs. Lisa Olson
District Administrator
Dear Parents,
Happy November! This month is an extremely busy month for us at
HUHS. Our music department is performing the musical, Anything Goes,
we are hosting the second annual HUHS Showcase, our winter sports season
begins, and we are beginning our district future planning process. I hope
that each of you finds time to participate in these activities to see our
students at their best!
As parents of current and future HUHS students, I strongly encourage
you to participate in our future planning process. As parents, we want
the absolute best for our children. As community members, we want the
absolute best for our community. We need your input to help in developing
our strategic roadmap for HUHS. Please complete the survey through the
link on the next page, by the link sent through the Message Center, or by
visiting the HUHS homepage and sending an email to survey@huhs.org.
Each parent or guardian should complete the survey.
In addition, we would like you to attend one of the three community
input sessions:
November 29 – Hartford Public Library, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
December 5 – Richfield Village Hall, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
December 6 – Saylesville School, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Parents play a critical role in the education of their children. Please make a
choice to become involved in the input process of our future planning. Our
children deserve the very best.

This fall marks the fourth year anniversary of our strategic planning process. We have much to celebrate as a
result of our strategic plan. At this important juncture, we have an important choice to make. We could ride
the momentum we’ve created or embark on creating a roadmap toward a future we desire for our students and
community. External forces, such as technology, demographics, economy, competition, and accountability are
driving the transformation of public education. We must create a strategic roadmap to navigate through future
decisions and prepare each student to maximize his or her own potential.
The HUHS Board of Education has decided to engage in a planning process which will create a partnership across
the groups of adults (parents, community, board, staff, and administration) and align roles of each group. The
process will allow the school district to work with the community to imagine our future, design a plan for our
future, and align resources and energies toward creating that future. The district belongs to the community and
we believe it’s appropriate for the community to identify what it wants for their students and schools.
To begin our Creating Our Future planning process, we are asking parents, staff, and community members to
become engaged in each of the following activities:
• COMPLETE THE SURVEY for all parents, community members, and staff. If you have not been provided a link
to the survey through your email account, send an email with the subject “SURVEY” to survey@huhs.org to
receive the link. The survey is available through Wednesday, November 23.
• VISIT THE BLOG: Visit the HUHS Creating Our Future blog at http://www2.huhs.org/future/ for links to websites,
videos, and books to learn more about the 21st century learning. Become engaged in the dialogue.
• PARTICIPATE IN A COMMUNITY INPUT SESSION to share additional thoughts about the strategic roadmap
and our future. Each session runs from 7:00 - 8:30 pm and will be held at the following locations: November
29 - Hartford Public Library • December 5 - Richfield Village Hall • December 6 - Saylesville School.
• REVIEW THE CURRENT STRATEGIC PLAN and a summary of activities accomplished to date located on our
website at http://www.huhs.org/page.cfm?p=375.
The timeline for our process follows:
• November 2011: Parent/community/staff survey; Student survey; Design team formed
• December 2011: Community input sessions; Design team meets
• January/February 2011: Design team meets with Board prior to course registration and budget
The strong relationships the HUHS Districts enjoys with its community is evidence that community members
recognize the importance of a meaningful education. In fact, without the community actively engaged, we would
most certainly fall short of our potential. With the community support, the HUHS District will continue to lead
the way, serving as a model for other communities.
As we move forward through this planning process, there are many key issues facing public education that we’ll
have to address together. We look forward to embarking on this journey with you to create our future at HUHS.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Thank you so much to those who recently attended Parent-Teacher
Conferences at HUHS. We appreciate the time you took out of your
busy schedules to connect with teachers, and we hope it was time
well spent. We were delighted by the turnout and believe many
positive outcomes occurred as a result of the conversations between
parents and teachers.
If you have not already taken the feedback survey, we would greatly
value your thoughts and reactions to the evening. Below is a link to a
For Seniors
ACT Testing: December 10th is the next ACT test with a November 4th registration deadline. Late registration
will take place from November 5 - 18, but there is an additional fee. Seniors who haven’t yet taken the ACT or need
to retest should test on December 10. Please go to www.actstudent.org to register.
Requesting a Transcript: Most colleges and universities ask for a HUHS transcript when applying. It is the student’s
responsibility to request their transcript be sent to the school. Transcript information can be found by clicking on the
“students” tab on the HUHS webpage using Docufide Secure Transcript. Please be aware that when asked to provide
the “Parchment Code” the student can bypass this field and go on to request a transcript without the code.
College Applications: Now is the time to submit applications for 2 and 4 year colleges as well as technical colleges.
Application due dates vary from school to school but in general many of them prefer to receive applications by
early December. Students are encouraged to apply to a number of schools to keep all their options open.
Letter of Recommendation: UW Madison and the University of Minnesota strongly encourage 1-2 letters of
recommendation with the student’s application. In those instances where a student’s admission is somewhat
uncertain it would beneficial to include a letter of recommendation from a teacher whom they had has an instructor.
The Counseling Office has a letter of recommendation template for students to use. The template can help the
writer draft a quality letter of recommendation.
Financial Aid Presentation
Tuesday, November 15 at 6:30 pm
Financial Aid is provided for by the federal government, the State of Wisconsin, outside scholarship
sources and the colleges/universities themselves. Most aid is based on financial need and is designed
to help meet the difference between the cost of college and the student and family’s ability to pay
for the education.
HUHS will be hosting a presentation for college-bound students and their parents to learn about grants,
loans, student employment and scholarships on Tuesday, November 15, at 6:30. A speaker from Great
Lakes Higher Education will be here to discuss the process of how families finance college costs through
all the available options. Senior students and parents should plan to attend!
For Juniors
ACT Testing: The deadline for the December 10th ACT test is November 4. Late registrationwill be accepted
November 5 - 18, but there is an additional fee. Juniors can take the ACT in December but counselors prefer the
April 14 or June 9 test days because students have completed a larger portion of their course work by that time.
Please remember UW Madison, University of Minnesota and Marquette require the ACT Plus Writing. Other
private and public in state schools only require the ACT without the writing portion of the test. Please go to www.
actstudent.org to register for the ACT,
PSAT Interpretation: Almost 90 juniors participated in this assessment in October. The test results will be shared
with test takers in December dependent upon when the test results are returned to HUHS.
SAT Testing: The next SAT test will be on December 3, with November 8 registration deadline. Many colleges on
the east and west coast refer to this test for admission. Go to sat.collegeboard.org to register.
College Preview Days: Now is the time for juniors and their parents to attend college preview/open house events.
This is an excellent opportunity to go find out more about post-secondary opportunities. Please contact the admission
office at those schools of interest to attend their preview days or set up a private visit.
Moraine Park Technical College: MPTC will be opening their application window from February 15 - March 15
for the following programs: Radiography, Surgical Tech, Respiratory Therapist, Medical Coding Specialist and Health
Information Technology. Juniors and seniors interested in these programs should apply during that time because
the window may then be closed again for an extended period of time.
For Sophomores
PLAN Test: The Plan Test is a practice ACT test, and will be offered to all college-bound sophomores on Wednesday,
December 7. This is trongly encouraged if a student is planning on applying to college, because it provides the
test taker with a projected ACT score and an overview of academic areas that need additional work before taking
the ACT. The cost of the test is $15.00 (checks payable to HUHS). Please sign up in the Counseling Office between
November 14 - December 2.
For Freshmen
Freshman Conferences: During first semester counselors are still meeting with freshman and their parents.
Items discussed at the freshman conference include: transition to HUHS, the counselor’s role, student academic
and career goals, and the formation of a 4 year career plan. Please contact the Counseling Office 670-3200 ext. 214
Students Receive Industry Certification
Students in Mr. Duhr’s Software Applications class have
spent the first quarter of the year learning Microsoft Word
at the expert level. The remaining semester will be spent
learning Microsoft Power Point, followed by Microsoft
Excel. The class recently had the opportunity to take the
Microsoft Office Specialist industry certification exam in
Microsoft Word, Excel, and/or Power Point.
While these exams are typically taken at the end of the
course and cost the student $80 per test, due to licensing expirations, the students were able to take these exams at
no cost if they took them this month.
We are pleased to announce twenty students from this class passed their exam, and have obtained the “Microsoft
Office Specialist” certification! Nine students passed both the Word and PowerPoint exams, while three of those
students passed all three exams: Word, Excel and PowerPoint. “I am very pleased that so many students
in the class passed their exams,” said Software Applications teacher Mr. Duhr. “Each of these
students will now be able to list on their resume that they have an industry certification in
these programs.”
Cyber Safety Starts with YOU
I hope that by now you have heard about the dangers of the internet. There
has been a lot of publicity about “Online Predators” and I’m glad that there is
a greater awareness of that issue. However, I’ve realized that there are things
happening that I wasn’t fully aware of, and you may not be aware either
myyearbook.com - live video features
In speaking with the Wisconsin Department of Justice (Wis DOJ), Internet Crimes
Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, they have reminded me of one of the real
dangers the internet poses for teens. They reported that the social networking web
site myyearbook.com allows for posting of live video, and many Cybertip reports
received by Wis DOJ originate from this website. Hartford Police Department (HPD)
has been notified by Wis DOJ of Cybertips originating from inappropriate teen
behavior on the internet. Whether solicited or not, teens are making bad decisions
about their behavior on the internet. We know that teens handle their developing
sexuality differently, but the internet and live video is facilitating inappropriate,
dangerous and possibly illegal behavior.
Officer Eric Rasmussen
Police School Resource Officer
Hartford Police Department
HUHS: 262-670-3226
HPD: 262-670-3609
“If you are interested
in attending any parent
education sessions in the near
future, please let me know.”
What is a Cybertip? A Cybertip is a report initiated by websites like myyearbook.
com and other websites who monitor their users. The websites generate reports when suspected child pornography
(underage nudity and sexual acts) are observed on their websites. They then forward the captured incidents with a
report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). NCMEC then creates the “Cybertip”
report and forwards it to the appropriate law enforcement jurisdiction for investigation.
The fact of the matter is that despite all of the education about being safe online, not all teens are doing so. At
myyearbook.com, normally developing teens are using cameras from their home computers and cell phones to
upload inappropriate live video and photographs. This website appears to be much like Facebook, but Facebook
doesn’t have a live video chat application, which is of concern here. Remember, there are cameras everywhere,
your computer, digital camera, cell phone or their friends camera, phone or computer. Today’s computers and
phones make uploading video very easy and teens not clear about the consequences can make life-changing
decisions in an instant.
facebook.com
Facebook.com has exploded in popularity. I would guess that most teens have a facebook account and most
parents do not. Even if you don’t have a computer at home, your kids may still have a Facebook account by using
a friend’s computer or phone. During my investigations of cyberbullying and harassment I have seen the teen
world of Facebook. It is different then the adult world of Facebook. Most of what teens say is unmonitored by
adults and they know it. Therefore they say things they wouldn’t normally say. Parents should monitor their
teen’s account and warn them of the consequence of what they say online. Police investigations involve things
said on the internet no differently than things said face to face. However, we do not police Facebook unless there is
an investigation and we need parents to help with the monitoring of Facebook. There is free computer monitoring
software available at download.com to help monitor your computer. You can also do a google search for how to
monitor Facebook and you find a lot of information.
County Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 13.
Rasmussen was nominated by the Hartford Area
Project Care coalition, part of the Prevention Network
of Washington County, for his dedication to the
community and his involvement with the youth in the
Hartford area. Julie Allen from Hartford Area Project
Care assisted in nominating Officer Rasmussen for this
honor. “Eric is an officer who would - and is - happy to
go above and beyond what his actual job responsibilities
are. The Hartford community and school district(s) are
lucky to have someone this dedicated and concerned
about the wellbeing of our youth”
Helpful
Tips...
from the Council on AODA of
Washington County
Over 6.2 million people age 12 and older report
abusing prescription drugs. Due to the fact that
prescription drugs, when used as prescribed, can
improve one’s health, many teens believe they are
a safe way to get high.
• Lock Your Meds: Every day, 4,047 children
and young adults begin experimenting with
prescription drugs. Only 4.7% of children
who abuse prescription drugs say they get the
medication from a stranger.
• Take Inventory: Using a Medicine Inventory Card,
write down the name and amount of medications
you currently have and regularly check to see
that nothing is missing.
• Educate Yourself and Your Child: Learn about
the most commonly abused types of prescription
medications. Then communicate the dangers to
your child regularly.
• Properly Dispose of Old and Unused Medications.
Middle Skills Presentation
Monday, November 21 5:30 - 6:00 pm
Worker shortages, layoffs – it seems like every
day we are hearing about employees being laid
off and employers looking for skilled workers. Dr.
Jonathan Bullock, Moraine Park Technical College’s
Vice President of Strategic Advancement, will offer
insight with his presentation “Wisconsin’s Forgotten
Middle Skill Jobs.” Bullock will speak to why layoffs
are occurring and why employers aren’t finding the
skilled workers they need. Middle Skill jobs are those
requiring more than secondary school but less than a
bachelor’s degree.
