<strong>Hartford</strong> <strong>Union</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> will be offering various summer school courses for credit this summer. Please<br />

check the course description for each course offered.<br />

Dates: Monday, June 11 – Friday, July 6 (19 sessions) [No <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>School</strong> on July 4.]<br />

Times: Session I 8:00 AM to 9:55 AM<br />

Session II 10:05 AM to 12:00 PM<br />

Location: <strong>Hartford</strong> <strong>Union</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> No Transportation Provided<br />

Registration Guidelines:<br />

When registering for summer school, students may want to consult with his/her counselor to determine the<br />

replacement courses in which to register. The enclosed registration form should be returned to the Counseling<br />

Office. Forms will be accepted in the Counseling Office until 8:00AM February 6.<br />

Due to the popularity of our summer school work ahead courses and limited access to facilities, Focus on Careers/Junior<br />

Health (combination), and Intro to Computer Programming follow a lottery process. Lottery notifications will go out via<br />

email by February 13, <strong>2012</strong>. Please note that entering the lottery does not guarantee a student will get into a work<br />

ahead course.<br />

You will receive an email when your registration has been accepted, if a class has been canceled, or if you have<br />

been placed on a waiting list.<br />

Attendance:<br />

A strict attendance policy will be adhered to in order to receive credit for summer school. A student cannot<br />

miss more than one class in order to receive credit. Students cannot receive more than one tardy to receive<br />

credit. A tardy more than 10 minutes late is considered an absence.<br />

Student Behavior:<br />

All school rules apply during summer school—including dress code.<br />

Earn Credit – Work Ahead<br />

Business and Information Technology<br />

8405 Focus on Careers .25 required credit<br />

This required course for HUHS juniors will “focus” on career exploration and development while introducing<br />

personal finance information. Students will have the opportunity to examine post‐secondary options and<br />

resources available for success. Employability skills, quality resume criteria, interviewing techniques and career<br />

goals will also be covered.<br />

8416 Introduction to Computer Programming .50 credit<br />

Introduction to Computer Programming is a course designed to introduce students to computers and problem<br />

solving using object‐oriented programming through animation in programs such as Alice and Greenfoot. These<br />

programming skills, along with form and menu design and graphical interfacing will assist the students in creating<br />

functional programs. Students will also learn introductory language aspects of Java. Java is the current language<br />

taught in AP Computer Science.<br />

English (Students may register for only one of the English courses below)<br />

1600S Creative Writing .50 credit<br />

Creative Writing is designed for students who wish to exercise their imaginations and to improve their<br />

composition skills by writing sketches, short stories, plays, and different types of poetry. The literature of various<br />

professional writers will be studied. A portfolio of finalized work and a submission for publication is required.<br />

* This course is offered to students entering 11 th & 12 th grade.<br />

1615S Science Fiction Literature .50 credit<br />

Students will read literary works of highly imaginative authors ranging from Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury to<br />

Orson Scott Card. An interest in the genre of science‐fiction is a positive for a student taking this course, but any<br />

student that enjoys reading can benefit from the class. Special units or selections may feature non‐fiction and<br />

readings from the fantasy genre. Types of media to be utilized will include novels, short stories, sound recordings,<br />

and film.<br />

* This course is offered to students entering 11 th & 12 th grade.<br />

Physical Education & Health Education<br />

5200 Junior Health .25 required credit<br />

This is a required course for all juniors. In this quarter long course, students will gain a knowledge base and learn<br />

skills which will help promote physical, emotional and social health both now and throughout life. This course will<br />

begin with a brief review of the topics covered in the Freshman Health course. Additional units and topics covered<br />

in Junior Health include: Wellness (nutrition, fitness, weight management, stress, sleep, disease, and disease<br />

prevention); Shaken Baby Syndrome, and CPR/First Aid. Upon successful completion of the CPR unit, students will<br />

have the option to be certified upon completion of the course. There is a fee of $19.00 for certification.<br />

Math<br />

ALGIIR Getting Ready for Algebra II .25 elective credit<br />

This course is geared toward students who will be entering Algebra II in the fall as a freshman or students who<br />

completed Algebra I with less than a C. Students will brush up and review skills to strengthen their algebra foundation<br />

in preparation for Algebra II.<br />

Technology and Engineering Education<br />

ENGAS Engineering Academy .25 elective credit<br />

Students participating in this course will work on skills and concepts which are desirable for Engineering fields. Project<br />

Lead The Way (PLTW) is a series of courses taught at HUHS for 9‐12 graders and is a Nationally certified program<br />

geared toward the education of students interested in an area of Engineering. This class will introduce students to the<br />

PLTW program. Students in this class will be exposed to preparatory lab and class work to better understand the world<br />

of Engineering. Students will work on Problem Solving, CAD drawings, Digital Programming, and basic Engineering<br />

calculations<br />

World Languages<br />

SPNIIR Spanish II Readiness .25 elective credit<br />

This course is geared toward students who will be entering Spanish II in the fall as a freshman or students who<br />

completed Spanish I with less than a C. Students will brush up and review skills to strengthen their language skills in<br />

preparation for Spanish II.<br />
