May, 2012
From the office of
Dr. Lisa Olson
District Administrator
Teacher Appreciation Week
In 1985, the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the
first full week of May. Expressing gratitude to our teachers for all they
do is especially meaningful during Teacher Appreciation Week each year.
Our children spend many hours a day with their teachers, who help
mold them, shape their character, and teach them academic subjects they
need to survive in this world. They also facilitate the many life lessons
our kids face when we're not there to help or untangle the complications
of interacting with their peers. When we consider the multiple roles each
teacher assumes every day, their job becomes even more daunting, more
challenging, and more noble.
Hartford Union High School is proud to have outstanding teachers dedicated
to providing each student with positive learning experiences with care and
compassion. It is not uncommon to find teachers in the building at 6 AM and
well beyond 6 PM--working with students, planning learning activities, and
collaborating with colleagues. The HUHS District wishes to commend all
our teachers in doing an outstanding job this school year!
If your child has the great fortune of having a really great teacher, please
express your appreciation for their dedication and commitment and impact
on your child. These special teachers deserve our respect and appreciation.
"Teachers teach because they care. Teaching young people is what
they do best. It requires long hours, patience, and care." ~ Horace Mann

Semester 2 Exam Schedule
(Underclassmen)
For 2011-12, the district chose not to have assigned
semester exam days, allowing student exams to be
held at each teacher’s discretion. Aligning with best
research and practices, flexibility was given to best
match the type and length of exam for each course.
After reviewing the implementation of semester exams
for first semester, we have decided to modify second
semester exams to ensure students have a manageable
schedule and provide ample opportunity to prepare
for semester exams. The following exam schedule will
be used for second semester for underclassmen.
The following juniors have been chosen to participate in the 2012 Badger Boys and Girls program this June: Abbey
Cordell, Joelle Michalak, Kayla Newman, Jack Carroll, Paul Hermann, and Davey Holzer.
Badger Boys and Girls State teaches the workings of government “by doing.” During this program, students from
all over Wisconsin will be grouped into cities and counties which will form a “51st state.” For eight days the citizens
of this “new state” will carry out all the main functions of city, county, and state government using basic laws and
fundamental procedures of the State of Wisconsin as their guide. The program is designed to teach its “citizens” the
American form of government is stronger and more vital in today’s world than ever before. Through this program,
these leaders of the future should develop a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation.
Peplinski Talks to HUHS Students About The Dangers of Drugs & Alcohol
HUHS students received a very important message on Wednesday: “You have
the opportunity to start your life every single day by making the right choices.”
These words were reiterated several times to the students by Germantown native,
David Peplinski. Sponsored by HUHS and the Peers 4 Peers group, Peplinski
spent 50 minutes talking with students about being at the height of his elite soccer
career, when drugs and alcohol caused his life to spiral out of control.
At 27 years old, Peplinski has a long list of accomplishments. While attending
Marquette University High School, he was the first person in history to start, play
in, and win four consecutive state soccer titles at MUHS. He was named to the top
50 recruits in the nation going into college. And he was honored with the most
prestigious award of his career, the Gatorade “Player of the Year Award” – an
award that has been won by respected athletes like Kobe Bryant, Emmitt Smith,
Mia Hamm and Lebron James. But added to that list of accomplishments is also
a long list of failed second chances, lost scholarships, two DUI’s, and even a
potentially life-threatening hit and run accident which landed him in the hospital.
Beginning in high school, David explained to students that he was involved with
drugs and alcohol very early on. Despite traveling around the world to play soccer by the age of 16, Peplinski
admitted to having trouble finding himself. “I was cocky, I didn’t care about others, I wasn’t the greatest friend
– but I was good at soccer and I was good at doing drugs” Peplinski said. “I could have done anything. I should
have done everything.” After receiving a full-ride soccer scholarship to St. Louis University, Peplinski lost his
scholarship after just his first season. After receiving a second chance, he was once again kicked out of school for
selling drugs. But people “looked the other way” according to Peplinski, who then received multiple offers from
other schools offering him scholarships to play soccer. With stops in Boulder, Colorado and the University of New
Mexico, Peplinski continued to play soccer and break records – and he also continued to do drugs.
Once again, Peplinski found himself kicked out of another university and back at home on his parents’ couch. After
spending two months in rehab, it was the small task of making his bed each morning that helped him understand
that he had the opportunity to change his life. “You only get one life. One chance to wake up each day and make
the right decision,” Peplinski told the students. “I deeply regret not taking advantage of the opportunities that
I had. Not everyone gets second chances. You need to realize that you only get one shot.” Peplinski has since
graduated from college and speaks to young people about his experiences with drugs and alcohol.
