Liebe Leserinnen und Leser, 

das Programmsegment der Jewish Studies bei De Gruyter ist in seiner Interdisziplinarität 

nicht nur besonders vielseitig, es ist seit dem ersten Katalog auch 

weiter gewachsen, durch neue Reihen und durch einen neuen Verlag. 

Mit Jahresbeginn gehört der Oldenbourg Verlag zu De Gruyter. Damit werden die 

Jewish Studies um ein breites Programm zeitgeschichtlicher Publikationen zur 

jüdischen Geschichte ergänzt, dessen Neuerscheinungen Sie in diesem Katalog 

bereits finden. An erster Stelle ist hier die Edition „Die Verfolgung und Ermordung 

der europäischen Juden durch das nationalsozialistische Deutschland 

1933-1945“ zu nennen, die seit Januar 2013 unter dem Titel „Die Quellen 

sprechen“ auch als dokumentarische Höredition des Bayerischen Rundfunks 

zugänglich ist. 

Zwei neue Reihen erweitern das Jewish Studies Programm: JCIT Judaism, 

Christianity, Islam – Tension, Transmission, Transformation (U3) stellt das 

Verhältnis der drei großen monotheistischen Religionen in den Mittelpunkt 

und spannt dabei den Bogen von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart. Die Reihe 

Perspectives on Jewish Texts and Contexts (S. 23) untersucht in internationalen 

Forschungsbeiträgen jüdische Texttraditionen in ihren historischen, sozialen und 

politischen Zusammenhängen. 

Weitere Höhepunkte im neuen Programm der Jewish Studies sind der Abschluss 

des Lexikons deutsch-jüdischer Autoren mit dem 21. Band (S. 21) sowie das neue 

Handbuch der deutschsprachigen Exilliteratur (S.23), das den neuesten Stand der 

exilliterarischen Forschung präsentiert. 

Als De Gruyter Oldenbourg werden wir das Jewish Studies Programm verstärkt 

weiter ausbauen und fundierte Orientierung in einem stark expandierenden 

Forschungszweig anbieten.

Dear readers, 

The Jewish Studies segment at De Gruyter is particularly diverse in terms of its 

interdisciplinarity, and since the first catalog, it has continued to grow through 

new publication series and through the addition of a new publisher. 

As of the start of the year, the Oldenbourg Verlag has become part of De Gruyter. 

This means that a broad portfolio of publications on contemporary Jewish history 

has enhanced our Jewish Studies catalog. New titles in these series can already be 

found in this catalog edition. We should give special mention to the publication of 

“The Persecution and Extermination of the European Jews by National Socialist 

Germany, 1933–1945” which has also been available since January 2013 under 

the title “The Sources Speak” as an audio documentary edition of the Bavarian 

Broadcasting Service. 

Two new series further expand the Jewish Studies catalog: JCIT Judaism, 

Christianity, Islam – Tension, Transmission, Transformation (inside back cover) 

focuses on the relationships between the three great monotheistic religions, thus 

spanning an arc from antiquity to the present. The series Perspectives on Jewish 

Texts and Contexts (p. 23) presents international research articles that examine 

Jewish textual traditions in their historical, societal, and political connections. 

Additional high points in the new Jewish Studies catalog are the completion of the 

Lexicon of German-Jewish Authors with the release of the 21 st volume (p. 21), and 

the publication of the new Handbook of German-language Exile Literature 

(p. 23), presenting the latest developments in research on the literature of exile. 

We will continue to expand our Jewish Studies portfolio under the De Gruyter 

Oldenbourg imprint, providing a forum for outstanding scholarship in this rapidly 

expanding branch of research.

As part of the German Jewish Cultural Heritage 

project, the expert contributors to this volume examine

a substantive contribution to the search for traces

The dandy is a Janus-headed figure: one half still 

imprisoned in the habitus and mentality of the 18th 

century, and the other half a maverick breaking 

through the class barriers imposed by the nobility. 

The new porousness of the world of the nobility 

cut off the dandy as a social type from his origins. 

This volume examines various manifestations and 

transformations of the dandy in the 19th and 20th 

centuries and presents biographies of some wellknown 

dandies.

Bis zur Erlangung der rechtlichen Gleichberechtigung 

war es für die preußischen Juden ein langer 

Weg. Im Fokus steht die Konflikt- und Diskursgeschichte 

zwischen den Delegierten der Judenschaften 

und der preußischen Beamtenschaft. Dabei 

werden die Grenzen und die Möglichkeiten der 

Toleranz in einer letztlich erfolgreichen Diskursgeschichte, 

die bis zum preußischen „Emanzipationsedikt“ 

(1812) führten, herausgearbeitet. 

The road to full legal equality was a long one for 

the Jews of Prussia. The focus of this study is 

on the history of conflict and dialogue between 

representatives of the Jewish community and 

Prussian administrative authorities. By examining 

the history of this discourse, the study casts light 

on the limitations and possibilities of tolerance in 

what ultimately proved to be a successful historical 

negotiation, culminating in the Prussian “Emancipation 

Edict” of 1812.

es vor allem jüdische Mediziner, gegen die sich der 

Antisemitismus in Deutschland ab 1933 richtete. 

In Folge des „Gesetzes zur Wiederherstellung des 

Berufsbeamtentums“ wurden jüdische Ärzte aus 

öffentlichen Einrichtungen entlassen und von den 

Hochschulen verwiesen. Der Band beleuchtet die Geschichte 

der Vertreibung, Entrechtung und Ermordung 

jüdischer Ärztinnen und Ärzte im Nationalsozialismus. 

Besides targeting Jewish jurists, from 1933 onward 

anti-Semitic movement in Germany particulary 

persecuted Jewish doctors. As a consequence of the 

“Law for the Restoration of the Civil Service,” Jewish 

doctors were fired from public establishments and 

expelled from universities. This volume examines the 

history of the disenfranchisement, expulsion, and murder 

of Jewish physicians by the National Socialists.

200 Jahre nach dem Erlass des „Edikts, betreffend 

die bürgerlichen Verhältnisse der Juden in dem 

preußischen Staate“ beleuchten dreizehn Beiträge 

unter Verwendung bisher nicht ausgewerteter Quellen 

dieses Emanzipationsmodell. Ausgehend von 

ihrer Situation zur Zeit Friedrichs II. wird der Frage 

nachgegangen, welche Möglichkeiten das Edikt 

für die Lage der Juden mit sich brachte und welche 

Grenzen es nach wie vor gab. 

Two-hundred years after the issuance of the “Edict 

concerning the civil rights of Jews in the Prussian 

state,” the thirteen essays in this volume examine 

the Prussian emancipation model with the benefit of 

previously unresearched sources. Starting from the 

situation facing Prussian Jews at the time of King 

Friedrich II, the contributors explore the question

Mit der „Theorie der zentralen Orte“ schuf Walter 

Christaller 1933 eines der fundamentalen Konzepte 

moderner Planung. Spuren hat sie sowohl im 

israelischen „Sharonplan“ als auch im „Generalplan 

Ost“ hinterlassen. Christallers Leitbild zielte 

auf eine funktionale Optimierung der Wirtschaftsfaktoren 

und der Verteilung der Bevölkerung im 

Raum. Joachim Trezib geht der Rezeption dieser 

Theorie und dem Hintergrund einer unerwarteten 

Parallelität nach. 

Walter Christaller’s “Central Place Theory” became 

one of the fundamental concepts in modern planning. 

Its traces were evident in Israel’s “Sharon 

Plan” as well as in the National Socialist “Masterplan 

for the East.” Central Place Theory aimed 

at optimizing the function of economic factors 

as well as the spatial distribution of the population.

Im Mai 1924 wurde in Berlin die Soncino-Gesellschaft 

der Freunde des jüdischen Buches gegründet. 

Benannt nach der jüdischen Druckerfamilie Soncino 

des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts in Italien, hatte 

sich diese erste jüdische Bibliophilen-Gesellschaft 

die Publikation seltener jüdischer Texte und hebräischer 

Drucke zum Ziel gesetzt. Der Band geht 

in acht Essays der Geschichte der Vereinigung und 

ihrem Engagement für die hebräische Buchkultur 

nach. 

In May 1924, the Soncino Society of the Friends 

of the Jewish Book was founded in Berlin. Named 

after the Soncinos, a 15th to 16th century Jewish- 

Italian family of printers, it was the first society of 

Jewish bibliophiles, and set the goal of publishing 

rare Jewish books and Hebrew printings. The eight 

essays in this volume explore the history of the Society 

and its commitment to Hebrew book culture.

best-known work “Degeneration” (“Entartung,” 

1892/93), which focuses on the modern pathologies 

of artistic modernism. Together with Nietzsche, 

Nordau is one of the most influential thought leaders 

of a tradition that, as it developed further, had 

a problematic influence not only on the National 

Socialist organizers of the book burnings and of 

the “Entartete Kunst” (Degenerate Art) exhibition 

of 1937, but also on the Bolshevist persecution of 

the artistic modern or on Georg Lukács’ polemic 

against the avant-garde modern.

During the first half of the 19th century, traditional 

Jewish conceptions of the Messiah underwent a 

profound reinterpretation. In place of the vision of 

a messianic king, new ideas arose about an ideal

of Jewish messianism did not originate from 

the works of the philosopher Hermann Cohen, but 

instead, had already arisen during the 1840s.

While the International Military Tribunal and 

the subsequent American Military Tribunals at 

Nuremberg dealt with a variety of Nazi crimes, 

these courts did not consider themselves cognizant 

in adjudicating wrongdoings against those who 

lost German citizenship based on the so-called 

“Nuremberg laws,” such as Germany’s Jews. Until 

recently, scholarship failed to explore this task of 

the German judiciary in more detail. Edith Raim 

fills this gap by showing the extent of the crimes 

committed against Jews beyond the traditionally

Die von Peter Zahn bearbeiteten Besuchsprotokolle 

berichten von 326 Schicksalen, hinter denen 

mehr als 1000 Angehörige stehen. 

Between November 1938 and December 1941 

more than 300 citizens of Jewish heritage sought 

assistance from the Munich couple Rudolf and 

Annemarie Cohen, who succeeded in rescuing 

around 200 people by helping them find contacts, 

arranging for emigration, and organizing financial 

support. The visitor logs, edited by Peter Zahn, 

document the fate of 326 families comprising more 

than 1,000 people.

Herrschaftsbereich lebenden Juden zutage 

getreten. Angesichts dessen ist auch die Rolle 

des nationalsozialistischen Deutschland neu zu 

bewerten. Hildrun Glass analysiert die Interaktion 

zwischen Deutschland und Rumänien und schließt 

eine Forschungslücke zu regionalen Dimensionen 

des Holocaust. 

The opening of the Romanian archives after 1989 

has brought to light the extent of the Antonescu 

regime’s policy of persecution and extermination 

directed against the Jews living under Romanian 

rule. This new information compels a reassessment 

of the actions of National Socialist Germany.

Das Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren erschließt den jüdischen Beitrag 

zur deutschsprachigen Kulturgeschichte in ca. 1.300 biographischbibliographischen 

Artikeln. Neben den Autorinnen und Autoren von Literatur 

im weitesten Sinn finden sich Vertreter der Geisteswissenschaften und 

weitere Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens, wenn ihr Wirken über 

ihr spezielles Fachgebiet hinaus Einfluss auf die deutschsprachige Kulturgeschichte 

hatte. 

Der biographische Teil führt Angaben zur Person auf und gibt Auskünfte 

– wenn möglich mit autobiographischen Zitaten belegt – zum politischen 

und zionistischen Engagement, zum Freundeskreis sowie zur Stellung zum 

Judentum. Im bibliographischen Teil werden die Werke soweit möglich und 

nötig in Autopsie bibliographiert und mit Annotationen zum Inhalt versehen. 

Inhaltsangaben, Zitate des Verfassers oder Auszüge aus Rezensionen 

schlüsseln sie weiter auf. 

The Lexikon deutsch-jüdischer Autoren covers the Jewish contribution to 

German-speaking cultural history in some 1,300 biographical-bibliographic 

articles. Besides authors of literature in the broadest sense, representatives 

of the humanities can be found and other individuals from public life who, 

through their work, were influential beyond their specialist field. 

The biographical part includes information on the authors and documents 

political and Zionist involvement, circles of friends, and attitude towards 

Judaism, with autobiographical quotations wherever possible. Each biography 

is followed by a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary 

literature in which the works are critically analysed and annotated, as far 

as possible or relevant. Quotations by the author, content of writings and/or 

excerpts from reviews are provided to further facilitate research.

Identität im Umfeld von Assimilation und 

Emanzipation entwerfen. 

The study examines literary representations of Jewish 

self-consciousness, highlighting the dissonances 

between different positions during the time of 

emancipation. It uses the example of Germanspeaking 

Jews during the 19th century who 

portrayed their existence in autobiographical narratives, 

and reveals how their personal and collective 

identities were created amidst an environment of 

assimilation and emancipation.

of faith has its roots in the Old Testament. 

Yet these roots have not been the subjects of extensive 

research until now; the present study attempts 

to fill this gap. Its point of departure is the Old 

Testament concept of faith as ’mn in Hif‘il. Beyond 

the literal meaning of this term, the study focuses 

on the ways it was reshaped during the Persian 

period and continued to evolve through history. In 

her historical exploration, the author documents 

the continuity between Old and New Testament 

discourses on faith. Thus, the book offers ways to

A Generic Analysis of the Apostrophe to 

Zion (11QPsa XXII 1-15); Tobit 13:9-18 and 1

Although in Second Temple literature we find 

a variety of songs concerned with the future of 

Jerusalem, little attempt has been made to analyse 

these comparatively as a generic group.In this 

study, three songs have been selected on the basis 

of their similarity in style, ideas and their apparent 

original composition in Hebrew. The texts have 

been subjected to a literary analysis both individually 

and then comparatively. A generic analysis 

reveals an intentional broadening and rewriting of 

their original model in the Zion Songs of Isa 40-66 

and a possible liturgical function, whose purpose 

was to inculcate the ongoing uniqueness and importance 

of Jerusalem as the centre of the Jewish faith 

and worship.

Medium, das eine Einordnung von Religion in rationale 

Zusammenhänge nahelegt. Gerade dadurch 

aber, dass sich Religion im Text manifestiert, stellt 

sie sich dem Widerspruch und bleibt im Dialog 

mit der Rationalität, was ihr Fortbestehen in allen 

Zeiten erst ermöglicht. 

The question of the relationship between religion 

and rationality is highly relevant in today’s world, 

as demonstrated by the debates that rage to this day 

concerning religious conflicts and their underpinnings 

in rationality. The conference proceedings in 

this volume examine this complex relationship by 

looking at a number of different sacred texts. This 

medium shows how religion can be classified in 

terms of rational coherencies. However, the very 

fact that religion is manifested in texts creates a 

paradox that places religion in an ongoing dialogue 

with rationality – and this in turn is a precondition 

for religion’s continued existence through time.

volumes exploring the reception and mediation of ideas and practices in the three monotheistic traditions of Judaism, Christianity, 

and Islam, from antiquity to the twenty-first century. Monographs, collected works, text editions, and bibliographic databases 

address their intertwining relations in various historical and geographical contexts. The series is intentionally interdisciplinary, 

inviting proposals across disciplines dealing with at least two of these three religions. The series is relevant to scholars as well as 

to those interested and engaged in interreligious exchange. 

Research areas of interest include: 

` Greek, Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic, Latin, and Ottoman cultural spheres 

` Enlightenment and modernity in various contexts
