As can be seen from <strong>the</strong> figure, <strong>the</strong> PMIS at EWN is of <strong>the</strong> stand-alone type and was tailored <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
specific needs of <strong>the</strong> decommissioning process. Issues such as 'Work package approval', covering <strong>the</strong><br />
internal approval process, and 'Mass flow/Disposal' are two aspects that play a specific role in<br />
decommissioning projects and would not be found in a traditional or conventional construction<br />
project. Ano<strong>the</strong>r aspect included in EWN’s PMIS is personnel development, relevant for<br />
decommissioning, which is not necessarily included in a standard PMIS for a construction project.<br />
To demonstrate <strong>the</strong> complexity of such a decommissioning project <strong>the</strong> EWN project structure<br />
hierarchy is shown in Figure 23. Included are <strong>the</strong> six sub-projects:<br />
Deconstruction of <strong>the</strong> nuclear power plants at Rheinsberg (KKR) and Greifswald (KGR);<br />
Refurbishment of <strong>to</strong>ols necessary for decommissioning;<br />
Operation of <strong>the</strong> interim waste s<strong>to</strong>rage facility Zwischenlager Nord (ZLN);<br />
Waste management (e.g. waste treatment, release from regula<strong>to</strong>ry control, etc.), and<br />
Site remediation and re-use.<br />

The hierarchy of <strong>the</strong> complete projects split in<strong>to</strong> 24 part projects, those in<strong>to</strong> 81 programmes, etc., and<br />
reaches down in<strong>to</strong> 7 312 single tasks. Some of those, on all different levels, are interrelated, some are<br />
independent. Each step requires specific resources, competences, etc.. To keep an overview and <strong>to</strong><br />
