Welcome to the Center for International Programs’ newsletter and student profiles. The purpose<br />

of this newsletter is to highlight international events we have on campus, as well as to profile some<br />

of <strong>Henderson</strong>’s international students.<br />

International Film Night<br />

Monday, <strong>October</strong> 8 @ 7:00 p.m.<br />

Garrison Center Lecture Hall<br />

For this year’s International Film Night, the Center for<br />

International Programs is joining with the Office of<br />

Diversity and Multicultural Affairs to present “Papers:<br />

Stories of Undocumented Youth.” This film tells the<br />

stories of undocumented youth and the challenge they<br />

face as they turn 18 without legal status.<br />

After the film, Ms. Mireya Reith, co-founder and Executive<br />

Director of the Arkansas United Community<br />

Coalition (AUCC), will speak about undocumented<br />

students and the DREAM ACT.<br />

International Dessert Festival<br />

HISA invites the campus community to the 6th Annual International<br />

Dessert Festival. Come and taste sweets from around the world. This<br />

event is free to members of the campus, but you better come early!!<br />

Where Are They Now?<br />

Bertrand Kiver Mapri Maimo (BK) is a 2007<br />

summa cum laude accounting graduate from<br />

Cameroon. He also earned his M.B.A. from HSU<br />

in 2008. During his time as a student, BK served<br />

as a student assistant volleyball coach, worked in<br />

the International Programs Office, and served as a<br />

Reddie Ambassador, president of the Student<br />

Advisory Board for the School of Business, and<br />

president of the <strong>Henderson</strong> International Students<br />

Association.<br />

BK is currently employed at Holliday, Lemons & Cox, P.C., a public<br />

accounting firm located in Texarkana, Texas. At the firm, he works as a<br />

senior accountant focusing mainly on governmental audits. He also continues<br />

to be an active TASO volleyball official, and he plays on a volleyball<br />

and soccer club. BK says that he is a proud REDDIE FOR LIFE.<br />

International Student Profiles<br />

HAYDEN HILLMER<br />

Hayden Hillmer is a freshman aviation major from Port Elizabeth, South Africa.<br />

He has been fascinated by flying ever since his first plane ride when he<br />

was 5 years old. His dad shared the same passion in planes and would always<br />

take him to see air shows.<br />

He attended the Aviation Institution Flight School in South Africa and achieved<br />

his private license. In 2009 Hayden flew his first solo flight. After flying for 3<br />

years, he started taking mechanical engineering classes at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan<br />

<strong>University</strong>. Wanting to further his studies as a pilot, Hayden found<br />

HSU through his brother, who is currently attending OBU.<br />

Hayden enjoys boating, water skiing, wake boarding, camping, off-roading and<br />

zip lining. He plans on going on to graduate school and becoming a professor<br />

one day.<br />

ITZELA CRUZ<br />

Itzela Cruz, a freshman biology major, is from Santiago de Veraguas, Panama.<br />

She discovered <strong>Henderson</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> through her educational<br />

advisor in Panama and Dr. James Engman.<br />

Itzela attended Technological Panama <strong>University</strong> for one year, majoring in<br />

environmental engineering before transferring to <strong>Henderson</strong>. Since childhood,<br />

she has always been concerned with her surroundings. She is interested in the interactions between<br />

all living things. She is environmentally friendly and wants to know everything about her surroundings.<br />

Her hobbies include reading, hanging out with friends, watching anime, swimming, singing, dancing to<br />

Latin music, and cooking.<br />

Itzela plans on pursuing her Ph.D. in the future and returning to Panama to do<br />

research. She also plans on traveling the world to learn more about different<br />

environments.
