MESSAGE FROM THE
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
KALE GOBER
It has been a successful fall
semester both athletically and
academically which are the two
areas where we want to excel.
We have the strongest group of
coaches that I have seen, and their
hard work and commitment to
Henderson State is starting to pay
dividends.
I also want to thank everyone
for their continued support of
Henderson State Athletics.
You are all a vital part of the
Reddie Family and without your
contributions and support, the
success we achieve would not be
possible.
I am excited to see all of the
spring sports gearing up, and I’m
ready to continue in the initial
stages of making our footprint as
the class of the Great American
Conference!
A NEW ERA AT HSU
Henderson State athletics has gone
through numerous changes this past
year, with the biggest change being a
new conference affiliation.
Now a part of the Great American
Conference, Henderson State looks to
be a prime contender for numerous
conference championships.
The Reddies experienced another
great football season with a climactic
41-36 victory over rival Ouachita Baptist.
Henderson finished the season 6-4
overall and 4-1 in the GAC. Two of the
Reddies’ losses came against Division
I opponents with a third to the hands of
NCAA playoff semifinalist Delta State.
Henderson State’s basketball
teams are just a few days away from
beginning the inaugural season of GAC
play.
Both teams are poised for a run at a
conference title and advance to
Bartlesville, Okla. for the GAC
Basketball Tournament in March.
The Lady Reddies are off to a 7-1
start and have won three straight. Firstyear
coach Chris Oestreich has brought
a new attitude to Henderson, and thus
far his team has responded.
“Our team will continue to play an
up-tempo style of basketball, but will
be more structured,” said Oestreich.
“Our players will be pushed and well
conditioned and fun to watch.”
First year coach Doug Nichols has
the Reddies moving in the right
direction. Despite its 4-5 record, the
Reddies are a much improved team
from a year ago.
The Reddies have played a very
difficult non-conference schedule
having played six games on the road
including contests against Central
Arkansas, Delta State and Texas A&M-
Commerce.
In early December, the Reddies won
the UA-Fort Smith Classic with a 65-
64 win over UA-Fort Smith and a 58-51
victory over Northeastern State.
”When we play with intensity and are
focused, we are real good,” said
Nichols. “If we want to be successful,
we will have to be more consistent and
that is something that will come as the
season progresses.”
You won’t want to miss any of the
action of Henderson State basketball
as both teams look to be very
entertaining. We expect to see you at
the Duke Wells Center on January 5
when Henderson State begins its first
season as part of the Great American
Conference.
ONE FOR THE AGES
HENDERSON STATE 41, OBU 36
It was a game that will go down as
a classic as Henderson State held
on to beat Ouachita Baptist 41-36 in
the 85th meeting of the St. Joseph’s
Mercy Battle of the Ravine.
In a game that will be discussed
for years, it came down to the final
play. With less than one second
remaining and the ball on the
Henderson 1-yardline, OBU turned to
running back Chris Rycraw to win the
game for the Tigers. Rycraw was
initially hit by Antonio Leak and then
stuffed by Taylor Stone to deny the
Tigers.
JARVIS SMITH RUSHED FOR
THREE TOUCHDOWNS
The Reddies had built a 41-17
lead with the help of three touchdown
runs by Jarvis Smith, a 67-yard
touchdown reception by Robert
Jordan, a 38-yard catch by Jazz Scott,
and an Elliot Hebert 48-yard catch for
Henderson’s final score.
OBU stormed back scoring three
times in the final quarter.
Reddie quarterback Kevin Rodgers
ended the game with some stellar
numbers, completing 26-of-41
passes for a career-high 332 yards
and three touchdowns. He earned
GAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance.
Hebert totaled five receptions for 101 yards, while Jordan had
4 catches for 70 yards. Henderson’s defense was led by Jeremy
Rodenburg and
Keaton Stigger who
both had seven
tackles. Wesley
Brady and Vincent
Thompson both
had interception for
the Reddies.
CELEBRATE ANOTHER
REDDIE VICTORY!
TY LINDBERG EARNS
PRESTIGIOUS HONOR
Henderson State volleyball player Ty Lindberg was recognized
by the Great American Conference as an All-GAC Second-Team
selection and the league’s inaugural Newcomer of the Year for
the 2011 season.
The sophomore outside hitter ranked
third in the league in kills averaging 3.88
kills per set. For the season, Lindberg
totaled 434 kills. In conference play, Lindberg
racked up 201 kills for an average of 3.59
Not just a potent offensive threat for the
Lady Reddies, Lindberg was also productive
on the defensive end. She finished second
on the team in defensive digs with 351. The
combination of her attacks and defense
resulted in her recording a team-high 15
double-doubles (kills/digs).
LADY REDDIE BASKETBALL
Despite having just three returning
players, Henderson State’s Lady Reddie
with the only blemish being a 76-75 heartbreaking
loss to Alabama-Huntsville.
points per game, while limiting the
opposition to just 59.9 points per contest.
Reddies travel to Texas to face Texas-Permian Basin. The Lady
Reddies open GAC play on Jan. 5 when they play host to
Southwestern Oklahoma at 5:30 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
REDDIE BASKETBALL
PUTING UP POINTS
The 2011-12 version of the Henderson State Reddie basketball
team features an up-tempo style of basketball that provides fans
plenty of excitement.
being buzzer-beaters to Central Arkansas and twice to Delta State.
Despite their record, the Reddies average 79.4 points per game
HENDERSON STATE GRADUATES 19 STUDENT-ATHLETES
Nineteen Henderson State University student-athletes participated in commencement ceremonies on December 16. They have succeeded in both academics and
athletics during their college years.
“Having been a student-athlete while I attended Henderson many years ago, I remember some of the sacrifices made to be successful in the classroom as well as on
the court or field,” said HSU Interim President Bobby Jones. “These student/scholars are to be commended for the time and effort spent to be successful in athletics and
in the classroom.”
Among those graduating include baseball student-athletes Grant Dennis (bachelors of science in biology), Garrett Eller (bachelors of arts in psychology), Ben Glenn
(bachelors of arts in sociology), Dustin Thornton (bachelors of business administration in marketing) and Kendall Norman (bachelors of business administration in
management).
Five players from the Reddie football team will receive their diplomas including Andrew Gomez ( bachelors of arts in history ), Nick Johnson (bachelors of arts in
communications), Kyle Mathieu (bachelors of arts in communications), Charles Ray (bachelors of science in recreation), and David Rebata (bachelors of science in
recreation).
master’s of science in sports administration.
Student-athletic trainer Jennifer Shnaekel earned her bachelors of science degree in athletic training.
“This is the best day for an Athletic Director I can tell you that,” said HSU AD Kale Gober. “Seeing these students reach a goal that, to be perfectly honest, probably
wasn’t as high of a priority initially as their athletic performance, is quite amazing. This is why we come to work every day.”
SWAG, Inc.
Each semester the Henderson State
athletic department recognizes those
student-athletes that excel in the
classroom. SWAG, Student-athletes
With Awesome Grades, is Henderson’s
new athlete academic club.
Those student-athletes that earn a
3.0 or better grade point average for
the semester are awarded for his or
her accomplishment with a t-shirt or a
hooded sweat shirt.
“We felt that for student-athletes
to get as excited about academic
achievement as they are about athletic
achievement that we needed to gear
this club towards them, and SWAG Inc.
will hopefully be an extra motivator for
each of them to achieve a 3.0 GPA or
better,” said AD Kale Gober. “It is great
to walk on campus and see so many
student-athletes wearing these shirts,
which symbolizes that are balancing
athletics and academics, which is easier
said than done.”
Henderson’s student-athletes are very active within the
Arkadelphia community.
Numerous student-athletes along with athletic staff took
part in Henderson State’s community service event entitled
“Reddie to Serve.” The project is the brainchild of Dr. Lewis
Shepherd, Vice President for External Affairs, who organizes
the event. The project brings Henderson State students, faculty
and staff together to volunteer and assist local residents in
Arkadelphia.
Throughout the fall, Henderson State student-athletes also
conducted numerous free Reddie Kids Clinics which will
continue through the winter and spring months.
participated in the Arkadelphia Christmas Parade, along with
many other community service projects. Another major event
was the Winter Wonderland project conducted by the HSU
Student Athlete Advisory Committee. The committee went to
Over the past year there have been numerous changes to
Henderson State’s athletic facilities.
Last winter, Clyde Berry Field received a facelift with new dugouts,
a backstop, concession stand, bathrooms and a press box.
In late spring, installation of the state-of-the-art artificial surface
was installed at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium. The new surface
was made possible thanks to the marketing efforts of HSU
Director of Athletics Kale Gober, donor gifts and a primary gift
from Don and Mary Yancey Ruggles of Texarkana. Both attended
Henderson State in the 1950’s.
With Henderson State joining the Great American Conference,
changes were also made to the Duke Wells Center. The floor
was resurfaced and new conference logos were painted on the
floor.
Last year a new scoreboard was also installed. The men’s
basketball locker room also received a facelift, with newly stained
lockers, a new floor, and drywall installed over the brick walls.
Additional changes are in the works for the months and years
to come, including the construction of the Ken Duke Golf Center.
